Zelfs in de buurt van de poolcirkel bedroeg de temperatuur meer dan 30\u00b0C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">De gemiddelde temperatuur op aarde is nu 1,4 graden warmer dan aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw, toen de mens op grote schaal broeikasgassen begon uit te stoten. Europa is volgens de nieuwe cijfers in die periode 2,5 graden warmer geworden - veel meer dan het wereldwijde gemiddelde.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Minder sneeuw en ijs<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Dat komt door \u201ceen combinatie van factoren\u201d:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Europa ligt vrij noordelijk op de aardbol en het continent is een droge landvlakte die niet wordt gekoeld door water zoals de zee. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Nog een reden waarom Europa bijzonder snel opwarmt: we hebben minder sneeuw en ijs, die zonlicht weerkaatsen en zo de opwarming vertragen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Je kunt ook aan het aantal dagen met vorst zien hoe de kou uit Europa verdwijnt. <\/span>Het gebied met \u2018vorstdagen\u2019 krimpt. <span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In het huidige klimaat heeft de winter zich teruggetrokken tot Duitsland en vorig jaar moest je voor slechts twee weken vorst verder weg reizen, richting Polen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>De Arctische en subarctische gebieden warmen bijzonder snel op. Hittegolven bereiken nu regio's die vroeger Europa's winterklimaat stabiliseerden.<\/p>\n<h4>Lage rivierstanden<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Een andere opvallende trend is het extreem lage waterpeil in rivieren. In een groot gebied, van Nederland tot de Baltische staten in het noorden en Turkije in het zuiden, stroomde veel minder water door de rivieren dan normaal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Door de lage rivierstanden waren er gelukkig weinig overstromingen, hoewel de situatie in Spanje en Portugal heel anders was: daar veroorzaakte een hele reeks stormen in november zware regenval en overstromingen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>\u2018Hittestress\u2019<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Een nieuw modewoord is \u2018hittestress\u2019, een combinatie van temperatuur, vochtigheid, windsnelheid, zonlicht en warmte die door de omgeving wordt uitgestraald. Bij een gevoelstemperatuur van 32 graden is hittestress \u2018sterk\u2019; boven 38 graden is het \u2018zeer sterk\u2019, verduidelijkt het European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In het zuiden en oosten van Spanje waren er vorig jaar minstens 50 dagen meer dan normaal met ernstige hittestress. Er waren ook tientallen tropische nachten meer dan normaal in Spanje en Portugal, met temperaturen die niet onder de 20 graden kwamen. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Zelfs in het koele Scandinavi\u00eb raakten mensen bekend met hittestress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Bijna overal in Europa waren er minder dagen met \u2018koudestress\u2019, een gevoelstemperatuur van min 13 graden of kouder. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Maar de echte tragedie voltrekt zich in Groenland. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Groenland<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In 2025 zou Groenland volgens berekeningen van het ECMWF netto 139 miljard ton ijs hebben verloren. Een onvoorstelbare hoeveelheid die gelijk staat aan het ijs van alle Alpengletsjers, vermenigvuldigd met anderhalf, en dat allemaal binnen \u00e9\u00e9n jaar. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">De zeespiegel stijgt nu al met ongeveer 3,6 millimeter per jaar, voornamelijk door de uitzetting van warmer water. Tegen het jaar 2100 zal de zee naar schatting ongeveer een halve meter hoger staan dan nu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">En ondertussen verandert er \u00e9\u00e9n ding niet: CO2-uitstoot. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Jaarlijks worden er ongeveer 2,6 deeltjes CO2 per miljoen luchtdeeltjes in de atmosfeer toegevoegd. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">\u201cHet tempo van de klimaatverandering vraagt om meer urgente actie,\u201d concludeert Samantha Burgess, hoofd Klimaat bij het Europese weercentrum ECMWF.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European State of the Climate 2025, a weighty annual report by the EU, confirms once again that Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world. 2025 was extremely warm almost everywhere, and about 95% of Europe had above-average temperatures.
