Het Intergouvernementeel Panel inzake klimaatverandering (IPCC) van de Verenigde Naties\u00a0schrapt haar somberste voorspelling: 4 tot 6 graden opwarming van de aarde tegen<\/span> 2100. <\/span>De doemscenario's en onheilspellende mediaberichten over de toekomst van het klimaat blijken te somber. <\/span><\/p>\n

Extreme opwarming van de aarde zal naar verwachting niet zo snel gaan en de sombere voorspellingen dat de zeespiegel in 2100 meer dan een meter hoger zal zijn, zijn ook te pessimistisch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dat betekent niet dat er niets aan de hand is, of dat de schade gering is, benadrukt emissieonderzoeker Detlef van Vuuren, auteur van de nieuwe IPCC-scenario's.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Onmogelijk om de opwarming onder de 1,5 graden Celsius te houden\u2019.\u2019<\/span><\/h4>\n

In het somberste nieuwe scenario stijgt de temperatuur van de aarde tot ongeveer 3,5 graden Celsius boven het pre-industri\u00eble niveau in 2100, ruim boven de 2 graden Celsius die als \u2018veilig\u2019 wordt beschouwd. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEn als we te weinig doen aan de uitstoot van broeikasgassen, zullen we onvermijdelijk toch hogere waarden krijgen. Het gebeurt gewoon later,\u201d legt Van Vuuren uit.\u00a0<\/span>De klimaatexpert wijst erop dat het niet langer mogelijk is om de opwarming onder de 1,5 graden Celsius te houden, zoals de bedoeling was.<\/span><\/p>\n

Catastrofaal scenario<\/h4>\n

Klimaatwetenschapper Zeke Hausfather (Berkeley Earth) wijst er in het tijdschrift Nature ook op dat \u201czolang de emissies boven nul blijven, de aarde zal blijven opwarmen. En de snelheid van opwarming die nu minder realistisch is voor 2100 blijft aannemelijk voor 2150 en daarna.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Het oude rampscenario van vijftien jaar geleden ging uit van een wereld die nauwelijks duurzaam zou worden, <\/span>maar in plaats daarvan steeds meer steenkool zouden gaan verbranden. Er zou ook weinig innovatie zijn en de wereldbevolking zou meer groeien dan nu het geval is.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Slechts\u2019 2,5 graden\u2019<\/h4>\n

Een doemscenario, met andere woorden, \u201cals we niets doen\u201d. Maar gelukkig is de wereld ge\u00ebvolueerd. Hernieuwbare energie is snel goedkoper geworden. En, hoewel nog onvoldoende, er is wel degelijk een klimaatbeleid.<\/span><\/p>\n

In het oude rampscenario zou de temperatuur in 2100 tussen de 3,3 en 5,7 graden zijn. Volgens het VN-milieuprogramma (UNEP) stevent de wereld met het huidige beleid echter af op \u2018slechts\u2019 2,6 graden.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
