Uitstoot van methaan, een broeikasgas dat bijdraagt aan de opwarming van de aarde, blijft zeer hoog. Dit meldde het Internationaal Milieuagentschap (IEA) maandag tijdens een internationale bijeenkomst in Parijs, waar het jaarlijkse Global Methane Tracker-rapport werd gepresenteerd.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025 was de recordproductie van de fossiele brandstoffensector (olie, kolen, gas) verantwoordelijk voor 35% van de methaanemissies door menselijke activiteiten, of 124 miljoen ton (Mt), schat het IEA.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geurloos, onzichtbaar gas<\/h4>\n

\u201cEr zijn geen aanwijzingen dat de wereldwijde energiegerelateerde methaanemissies in 2025 zullen zijn afgenomen\u201d, aldus het IEA.\u00a0<\/span>Met een veel groter opwarmingsvermogen dan CO2 is methaan verantwoordelijk voor ongeveer 30% van de stijging van de gemiddelde temperatuur op aarde sinds de industri\u00eble revolutie. <\/span>Maar omdat de levensduur korter is, biedt het verminderen ervan \u201caanzienlijke voordelen op de korte termijn voor het klimaat\u201d.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Methaan is een geurloos, onzichtbaar gas, het hoofdbestanddeel van aardgas, dat afkomstig is van bronnen zoals gaspijpleidingen, koeien en stortplaatsen.\u00a0<\/span>In de olie- en gasindustrie ontsnapt methaan door lekken in apparatuur of tijdens het ontgassen of affakkelen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wereldwijd komt jaarlijks ongeveer 580 miljoen ton methaan vrij, waarvan 60% is toe te schrijven aan menselijke activiteit, geleid door landbouw, gevolgd door energie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oplossing voor de energiecrisis<\/h4>\n

Volgens het IEA kan de strijd tegen methaan echter een oplossing bieden voor de energiecrisis. <\/span>Beproefde oplossingen, zoals het opsporen en repareren van lekken of het beperken van het affakkelen, zouden ongeveer 30% aan emissies van fossiele brandstoffen \u201czonder kosten\u201d voorkomen. Het afgevangen gas kan worden doorverkocht.<\/span><\/p>\n

In de context van spanningen op de energiemarkten als gevolg van de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten is het aanpakken van methaan niet alleen een klimaatprobleem, maar ook een duidelijke kwestie van energiezekerheid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oorlog in het Midden-Oosten<\/h4>\n

Het IEA merkt op dat het terugwinnen van dit ongebruikte gas de energievoorziening, die op de proef is gesteld door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten, zou versterken door de markten jaarlijks van 200 miljard m\u00b3 gas te voorzien.\u00a0<\/span>Deze 200 miljard m\u00b3 vertegenwoordigt het dubbele van de hoeveelheid gas die jaarlijks door de Straat van Hormuz stroomt, die sinds het begin van de oorlog geblokkeerd is.<\/span><\/p>\n
