In 2025 noteerde het langeafstandsnetwerk van Deutsche Bahn het slechtste stiptheidsrecord in de geschiedenis: slechts 60,1% van de treinen arriveerde binnen zes minuten van de geplande tijd en dat cijfer blijft maar dalen. De staatsoperator rapporteerde tegelijkertijd een nettoverlies van \u20ac2,3 miljard.<\/p>\n<h4>Interessante verstoorder<\/h4>\n<p>In dit weinig glamoureuze landschap rijdt een onverwachte nieuwe captain of industry: Luca Cordero di Montezemolo. Hij is vooral bekend als voormalig hoofd van Ferrari. Toen hij werd afgezet door toenmalig FCA-chef Marchionne, ging Montezemolo niet op zijn lauweren rusten. Hij werd medeoprichter en voorzitter van de Italiaanse particuliere hogesnelheidsmaatschappij Italo, die zich ontpopte tot een van de interessantste verstoorders van de Europese mobiliteit.<\/p>\n<p>Nadat Italo met succes is doorgebroken op de Italiaanse spoorwegmarkt, gaat het nu in een stroomversnelling. Het bedrijf heeft officieel plannen aangekondigd om binnen twee jaar de Duitse hogesnelheidsmarkt te betreden. De uitbreiding wordt ondersteund door een investeringsprogramma van 3,6 miljard euro.<\/p>\n<p>De eerste vloot van 26 Siemens Velaro-treinen (met opties voor nog eens 14) zal in 18 steden rijden op een netwerk van 1.300 kilometer, dat twee hoofdassen bestrijkt: M\u00fcnchen-Keulen-Dortmund met vertrek om het uur en M\u00fcnchen-Berlijn-Hamburg om de twee uur. Ongeveer 50 dagelijkse diensten in totaal, gericht op de ICE-routes die DB als zijn meest waardevolle bezit beschouwt. Tenminste, dat is het idee.<\/p>\n<h4>Gemiddelde ticketprijs<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cDe huidige Duitse markt lijkt sterk op hoe de Italiaanse markt eruitzag voordat er concurrentie kwam,\u201d vertelde Montezemolo aan de Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. \u201cWe zijn ervan overtuigd dat we een belangrijke bijdrage kunnen leveren aan de verbetering van de spoordiensten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Italo ging in 2012 van start in Itali\u00eb en doorbrak het jarenlange monopolie van Trenitalia op binnenlandse hogesnelheidsroutes. Wat er daarna gebeurde werd een casestudy die de Europese Unie nu aanhaalt om andere landen aan te sporen tot open concurrentie. De gemiddelde ticketprijzen op de Italiaanse hogesnelheidslijnen daalden met ongeveer 40% in de jaren na de komst van Italo. Het aantal passagiers steeg. Beide exploitanten breidden hun netwerken uit.<\/p>\n<p>Montezemolo is duidelijk over wat hij over de Alpen exporteert: \u201cWe hebben veel geleerd van de fouten in onze beginjaren. Wat we naar Duitsland brengen is die ervaring: hoe je een duurzame operatie opbouwt vanaf dag \u00e9\u00e9n.\u201d Italo bevestigt dat de vergunning voor de spoorwegexploitatie al is verkregen, terwijl het veiligheidscertificeringsproces gaande is.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>De race is begonnen<\/h4>\n<p>Wat krijgen passagiers? Alle drie de Italo cabineklassen - Smart, Prima en Club Executive - blijven behouden. Deze bieden gereserveerde zitplaatsen, lederen bekleding en satelliet-WiFi. Dat laatste detail wordt benadrukt: betrouwbare connectiviteit aan boord is een hardnekkig zwak punt op de Duitse langeafstandsdiensten.<\/p>\n<p>Italo is nog niet in Duitsland. De lokale netwerkbeheerder moet de lange-termijnspoortoewijzingen bevestigen die het bedrijf nodig heeft. En deze worden betwist door andere concurrenten, zoals Flix Train.<\/p>\n<p>Het addertje onder het gras is dat de overeenkomst met Siemens moet worden getekend voordat toestemming wordt verleend, wat een risico inhoudt. Het uitstellen van treinbestellingen is niet eenvoudig en kan het plan helemaal in gevaar brengen. Of de Duitse spoorwegexploitanten te maken krijgen met nieuwe concurrentie lijkt een race tegen de klok.
