Het Amerikaanse bedrijf LanzaTech heeft de Noordzeehaven in Gent gekozen als locatie voor zijn eerste Europese fabriek voor de productie van duurzame vliegtuigbrandstof (SAF) met behulp van alcohol-naar-jet technologie.<\/p>\n

Met het project is een investering van 500 miljoen euro gemoeid. De fabriek zal naar verwachting 50 vaste banen cre\u00ebren, naast ongeveer 300 banen tijdens de drie jaar durende bouwperiode.<\/p>\n

ArcelorMittal's ethanol als grondstof<\/h4>\n

LanzaTech is een beursgenoteerd Amerikaans technologiebedrijf dat gespecialiseerd is in het omzetten van koolstof uit industri\u00eble afvalstromen in nieuwe grondstoffen, duurzame brandstof en chemicali\u00ebn.<\/p>\n

Volgens CEO Jennifer Holmgren werd Gent gekozen vanwege het bestaande industri\u00eble ecosysteem en de logistieke infrastructuur langs het kanaal Gent-Terneuzen.<\/p>\n

De fabriek zou recht tegenover de Steelanol-fabriek van ArcelorMittal komen te staan. De staalproducent produceert ethanol uit opgevangen industri\u00eble afvalgassen. Dat ethanol zal nu dienen als grondstof voor de nieuwe fabriek van LanzaTech, waar het via een chemisch proces wordt omgezet in duurzame vliegtuigbrandstof.<\/p>\n

De rol van Steelanol, dat gebruik maakt van door LanzaTech ontwikkelde technologie, in het nieuwe project is opvallend. Eind vorig jaar nog werden er vragen gesteld over de economische levensvatbaarheid van de faciliteit, die zo'n 200 miljoen euro kostte en amper 3,5 jaar operationeel is. Op dat moment werd er openlijk gesproken over een mogelijke sluiting.<\/p>\n

Het regelgevingskader was een bijzonder belangrijke factor: het geproduceerde ethanol werd nog niet erkend als geavanceerde biobrandstof of gerecyclede brandstof, waardoor de klimaatvoordelen niet voldoende tot uiting kwamen in de emissiebalans.<\/p>\n

Volgens ArcelorMittal dreigde de fabriek zonder oplossing economisch onhoudbaar te worden. Maar nu zou de geplande SAF-fabriek van LanzaTech een extra afzetmarkt kunnen bieden voor het ethanol dat in Gent wordt geproduceerd.<\/p>\n

Jaarlijkse SAF-productie van 79.000 ton<\/h4>\n

De fabriek zal naar verwachting jaarlijks 79.000 ton SAF en 9.000 ton hernieuwbare diesel produceren. SAF wordt momenteel beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste alternatieven voor conventionele kerosine in de luchtvaartsector, waar de druk toeneemt om de CO2-uitstoot te verminderen. Europese regelgeving verplicht luchtvaartmaatschappijen ook om het aandeel duurzame brandstoffen in hun brandstofmix de komende jaren te vergroten.<\/p>\n

De SAF-fabriek maakt deel uit van het FLITE-consortium (Fuel via Low Carbon Integrated Technology from Ethanol) en ontvangt steun via het Europese Horizon 2020-programma. De faciliteit moet voldoen aan internationale normen voor SAF's, waaronder CORSIA en de Europese ReFuelEU<\/a> Luchtvaartvoorschriften.<\/p>\n

Momenteel is er wereldwijd slechts \u00e9\u00e9n commerci\u00eble LanzaJet-fabriek in bedrijf, in Soperton, Georgia (VS). De fabriek heeft een capaciteit van ongeveer 10 miljoen gallon brandstof per jaar.<\/p>\n

In het Verenigd Koninkrijk heeft LanzaJet - de LanzaTech dochteronderneming die de Alcohol-to-Jet technologie commercialiseert - ook fabrieken, met name in Teesside. De fabriek zal jaarlijks meer dan 90.000 ton SAF en hernieuwbare diesel produceren. Alle geproduceerde SAF is bestemd voor British Airways, wat de CO2-uitstoot van de luchtvaartmaatschappij met 230.000 ton per jaar zou verminderen.<\/p>\n

Er is nog geen startdatum bekend<\/h4>\n

Op dit moment zijn de voorbereidende studies naar verluidt grotendeels afgerond, zijn de intentieverklaringen voor de levering van grondstoffen ondertekend en zijn de hoofdlijnen van de afnameovereenkomsten afgerond.<\/p>\n

De investering is echter nog onderworpen aan verdere vergunningsprocedures en een definitieve investeringsbeslissing.<\/p>\n

De kennisgeving voor de milieueffectrapportage (MER) zal binnenkort worden ingediend bij de relevante autoriteiten, wat een belangrijke stap is in de volgende fase van het project. Een specifiek tijdschema voor de start van de bouw is nog niet bekendgemaakt.<\/p>\n

\u2018Impact 2030\u2019<\/h4>\n

Volgens North Sea Port toont het project ook aan waarom de haven van Gent een aantrekkelijke locatie blijft voor nieuwe energie- en chemieprojecten. De haven biedt uitgebreide opslagfaciliteiten voor vloeibare bulk, bestaande brandstofinfrastructuur en multimodale verbindingen via zeevaart, binnenvaart, spoor en weg.<\/p>\n

De aanwezigheid van grote industri\u00eble spelers speelt ook een belangrijke rol, net als de \u2018Impact 2030\u2019-strategie, die zich volledig inzet voor de energietransitie, de circulaire economie en alternatieve brandstoffen zoals waterstof en biobrandstoffen. Het havengebied telt 550 bedrijven en cre\u00ebert directe en indirecte werkgelegenheid voor 106.000 mensen.<\/p>\n

In Belgi\u00eb wordt al SAF geproduceerd, hoewel dit een relatief recente ontwikkeling is. Afgelopen augustus is TotalEnergies begonnen met de productie van SAF op haar raffinaderij in Antwerpen. De SAF wordt geproduceerd via co-processing, een ge\u00efntegreerde methode waarbij hernieuwbare grondstoffen worden verwerkt naast aardolie binnen een bestaande raffinaderij.<\/p>\n

De gebruikte grondstoffen zijn bakolie en dierlijke vetten. Het bedrijf mikte al op een productie van 50.000 ton tegen 2025, genoeg om Belgi\u00eb zelfvoorzienend te maken onder het huidige Europese SAF-mandaat.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
