De ondergang van een andere veelbelovende celfabrikant laat zien hoe Europa praat over industri\u00eble soevereiniteit, maar weigert de voorwaarden daarvoor te garanderen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">De groene mobiliteitsgroep Transport &amp; Environment trekt de aandacht en waarschuwt dat het continent 34 bedrijven ter grootte van Northvolt kan verliezen als de politiek blijft zoals ze is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Het eindigde, zoals zo vaak, met een persbericht dat niemand wilde schrijven. Morrow Batteries, de belangrijkste batterijfabrikant van Noorwegen, bewees samen met Northvolt dat Europa een geloofwaardig alternatief kan bieden voor de dominantie van Chinese cellen - en kondigde aan faillissement aan te vragen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Het bestuur was er, na maanden van steeds wanhopiger onderhandelingen, niet in geslaagd om de extra financiering voor het voortbestaan veilig te stellen.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Stijgend dodental<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">De zorgwekkende conclusie van de ondergang van Morrow is dat dit het derde grote Scandinavische batterijbedrijf is dat kort na elkaar ten onder gaat. Eerst was er de implosie van Northvolt (hoewel het probeert te herrijzen na de overname door het Amerikaanse Lyft) en daarna volgde de stille aftocht van Freyr Battery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Deze laatste heeft zijn gigafactory-ambities opgegeven ten gunste van Amerikaanse zonneprojecten. Het dodental in de sector blijft stijgen. In heel Europa en Noord-Amerika zijn sinds begin vorig jaar meer dan 14 westerse batterijproducenten failliet gegaan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Wat het einde van Morrow bijzonder pijnlijk maakt, is hoe geloofwaardig het bedrijf was. Het had echte, veelbelovende technologie, zoals LFP-cellen met 30% betere prestaties (vergeleken met het gemiddelde), samen met een nieuwe generatie chemie die kobalt elimineerde en een echte niet-Chinese toeleveringsketen bood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Er waren ook klanten, zoals Nordic Batteries, het Oekra\u00efense staatsbedrijf Eldrift en, slechts enkele weken voor het einde, het eerste defensiecontract met een grote Duitse fabrikant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Er waren ook grote investeerders bij, waaronder ABB, Siemens Financial Services en het Noorse staatsfonds voor het klimaat Nysn\u00f8. Samen hadden ze meer dan 280 miljoen euro in het bedrijf gestoken.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Een bekende litanie<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">De redenen die Morrow zelf aangaf voor zijn mislukking zijn een bekende litanie: Chinees overaanbod dat de prijzen drukte, stijgende kapitaalkosten, de complexiteit van industrialisatie en een investeringsmarkt die er niet meer in geloofde. Het zijn dezelfde krachten die hun collega's de das hebben omgedaan. Dit zijn structurele problemen, geen toeval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In een recent onderzoek, dat vlak na de val van Morrow werd gepubliceerd, zet Transport &amp; Environment de industri\u00eble kosten van Europa's drift nauwkeurig in cijfers. Het rapport \u201cHigh Stakes: How Much EV Investment Is At Risk Across Europe?\u201d, wordt de impact op de batterijproductiecapaciteit gemodelleerd volgens drie scenario's: de huidige EU CO\u2082-wet, de door de Commissie voorgestelde afzwakking van de doelstellingen en de eisen van de auto-industrie zelf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Deze laatste pleiten voor een gemiddelde over vijf jaar in plaats van een vaste norm voor 2030, en voor het afzwakken van de deadline van 2035 voor nulemissie tot 80%.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Strengere regels om een batterij-industrie te ondersteunen?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">De bevindingen? Als de autolobby haar zin krijgt, zou de Europese productie van elektrische auto's in 2030 kunnen halveren tot 3,7 miljoen eenheden, vergeleken met de prognoses. De batterijproductiecapaciteit zou met meer dan tweederde krimpen. Het equivalent, zo berekent T&amp;E, van het verlies van 34 fabrieken ter grootte van Northvolt en tot 47.000 banen. De markt zou er niet zijn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cVan China tot Chili zijn elektrische voertuigen nu de groeimotor van de wereldwijde auto-industrie\u201d, zegt Julia Poliscanova, T&amp;E's senior director voor voertuigen en toeleveringsketens voor e-mobiliteit. \u201cAls Europa zijn klimaatdoelstellingen voor auto's verzwakt, zal China nog verder naar voren trekken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In het onderzoek is ook gemodelleerd wat er gebeurt met de kathodeproductie, het duurste onderdeel van een batterijcel. Onder de huidige wetgeving zou de lokale kathodeproductie tegen 2030 meer dan tweederde van de Europese vraag kunnen dekken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In de auto-industrie overleven slechts vijf kathodeprojecten, die nauwelijks 10% van de behoefte dekken. De afhankelijkheid van Chinese import zou niet afnemen, maar toenemen.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Stabiele horizon<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">De kwetsbare business case van batterijfabrikanten vereist duidelijk een voorspelbare vraag om de schaal te bereiken die nodig is om te concurreren. CO2-normen bepalen die vraag. Die normen worden op dit moment herschreven.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Morrow had de klanten, de technologie en een goede groep vroege investeerders. Wat ontbrak was een stabiel regelgevend landschap dat nieuwe investeerders reden gaf om te geloven dat de markt voor zijn producten voldoende zou groeien tegen de tijd dat het bedrijf commerci\u00eble schaal zou bereiken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ondertussen is CATL's aandeel in de wereldwijde batterijcapaciteit elk jaar met meer dan 9% gestegen tot een dominante 40,7%.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Battery cell maker Morrow has filed for bankruptcy.
