De oorlog in Iran verstoort de olietransporten door de Straat van Hormuz. Hierdoor stijgen niet alleen de prijzen aan de pomp, maar ook die van vliegtuigbrandstof. Bovendien zeggen analisten dat er een re\u00ebel risico bestaat op een fysiek tekort aan vliegtuigbrandstof in de toekomst.<\/p>\n

Onder andere Lufthansa en Brussels Airlines bagatelliseren de tekorten aan vliegtuigbrandstof, deels dankzij nieuwe contracten met andere leveranciers<\/a>. Volgens een rapport van investeringsbank Goldman Sachs zijn de aandelen in de havens van Antwerpen, Rotterdam en Amsterdam - de ARA-regio genoemd - gedaald tot het laagste niveau sinds maart 2020, het begin van de COVID-19-crisis.<\/p>\n

Strategische reserves onder druk<\/h4>\n

Volgens de zakenkrant De Tijd, die het rapport citeert, toonde de ARA-indicator de afgelopen twee weken een totale voorraad van iets meer dan 550.000 ton in de drie havens samen. Het is sinds maart 2020, toen de voorraad 395.000 ton bedroeg, dat de voorraadniveaus zo laag waren. De analisten van Goldman Sachs zijn dan ook duidelijk: met de huidige voorraden zou de sector nog 30 dagen voorraad hebben.<\/p>\n

Verschillende landen, waaronder India en Thailand, hebben al melding gemaakt van brandstofrantsoenen of onderbrekingen in de aanvoer, terwijl regeringen in andere delen van Azi\u00eb maatregelen hebben genomen om het verbruik te beheersen.<\/p>\n

En hoewel grote economie\u00ebn zoals China en Japan aanzienlijke strategische reserves aanhouden en daarom, net als de VS, beter gepositioneerd zijn om de schok op te vangen, kunnen lokale tekorten toenemen als de verstoringen in de Straat van Hormuz aanhouden.<\/p>\n

Dit geldt met name voor de regio's die het meest afhankelijk zijn van import, waaronder Europa, en in het bijzonder de ARA-havens.<\/p>\n

Import naar historisch dieptepunt<\/h4>\n

Als gevolg van het Iran-conflict daalde de Europese import van vliegtuigbrandstof uit het Midden-Oosten in april tot een historisch dieptepunt. Het Internationaal Energieagentschap (IEA) waarschuwde daarom dat Europa kan zonder vliegtuigbrandstof komen te zitten<\/a> medio mei.<\/p>\n

Zover is het nog niet, hoewel luchtvaartmaatschappijen als Lufthansa en KLM al vluchten hebben geannuleerd om brandstof te besparen, of was het een excuus om onrendabele vluchten te annuleren, zoals sommige experts suggereren?<\/p>\n

Bovendien is de snelle daling van de voorraden in de ARA-havens ook te danken aan de export naar Aziatische landen. Omdat de prijzen in de ARA-regio relatief lager zijn dan in Azi\u00eb, kopen deze landen de vliegtuigbrandstof op.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Geen tekenen van acute fysieke tekorten<\/h4>\n

Voorlopig zijn er geen tekenen van acute fysieke tekorten, deels omdat strategische reserves geleidelijk worden vrijgegeven in geval van nood. Samenwerking met andere Europese landen is echter cruciaal om te voorkomen dat die reserves onmiddellijk de havens verlaten.<\/p>\n

Bovendien staat Europa ook niet werkloos toe te kijken. Een van de maatregelen die al besproken of ge\u00efmplementeerd zijn, is het versoepelen van de regels voor het gebruik van Amerikaanse \u201cJet A\u201d-brandstof in Europa. Jet A-1, de standaard in de rest van de wereld, heeft een lager vriespunt van -47\u00b0C vergeleken met -40\u00b0C voor Jet A, waardoor het geschikter is voor internationale vluchten op grote hoogtes. En de VS hebben hun export van vliegtuigbrandstof naar Europa aanzienlijk opgevoerd, tot ongeveer zes keer het normale niveau.<\/p>\n

Ook op de bucketlist: een waarnemingspost voor kerosine oprichten om de verplichte minimumvoorraden in realtime te controleren en te herzien.<\/p>\n

Maar zelfs als de Straat van Hormuz nu volledig zou worden heropend, zou de markt nog maanden nodig hebben om te herstellen. Als de heropening nog een paar weken wordt uitgesteld, zou het herstel pas in 2027 volledig zijn.<\/p>\n

En dan moet de zomer, met zijn hoogseizoen voor reizen, nog komen. Goldman Sachs waarschuwt daarom dat de handelsvoorraden in Europa in juni onder de kritieke drempel van 23 dagen kunnen zakken.<\/p>\n

De markt is nerveus.<\/h4>\n

Experts adviseren reizigers die deze zomer en herfst willen vliegen daarom om nu te boeken, als ze dat nog niet hebben gedaan. Niemand weet immers hoe lang het brandstoftekort zal duren of hoe groot de druk op luchtvaartmaatschappijen zal blijven.<\/p>\n

Maar op een gegeven moment zullen de reiskosten, inclusief de brandstofprijzen, de inkomsten overschrijden, wat de reden is waarom de ticketprijzen stijgen en dat waarschijnlijk zullen blijven doen.<\/p>\n

Het is dan ook een understatement om te zeggen dat de markt bijzonder nerveus is, want juli-augustus is de periode waarin luchtvaartmaatschappijen een onevenredig groot deel van hun jaarwinst maken.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
