Kia wil de Stinger graag nieuw leven inblazen in een elektrisch jasje. Niet in de laatste plaats om zijn emotionele aantrekkingskracht en design een boost te geven, maar ook om zijn elektrische portfolio te diversifi\u00ebren buiten de volumeverkopende SUV's. Het lijkt er echter op dat de hoge ontwikkelingskosten voor een EV die speciaal bedoeld is voor prestaties een groen licht voor productie momenteel in de weg staan.<\/p>\n

Kia onderzoekt actief een volledig elektrische spirituele opvolger voor de uit productie genomen Stinger sportsedan. Een auto die zelfs de Polestar 5 zou kunnen uitdagen. Om de buzz levend te houden, bracht de Koreaanse autofabrikant zijn Vision Meta Turismo naar de Milan Design Week. Oorspronkelijk brak het concept eind vorig jaar al door op een speciaal evenement in Seoul.<\/p>\n

Milaan Design Week<\/h4>\n

In een gesprek met Autocar bevestigde Karim Habib, hoofd design van Kia, dat de fabrikant nog steeds van plan is om zich op het segment van de liefhebbers te richten. Als conceptuele basis voor dit potenti\u00eble model is de Meta Turismo afgestemd op de \u201cgamersgeneratie\u201d. Deze sfeer komt tot leven in het interieur, met een stuurinrichting in jukstijl en een meeslepende ervaring.<\/p>\n

Hoewel de leidinggevenden van Kia min of meer groen licht hebben gegeven voor het project, hangt de komst ervan af van een cruciale factor: concurrerende kosten. Dit zou kunnen duiden op de ontluikende technologie van solid-state batterijen. Verwacht dus niet dat je binnenkort een Stinger met een Meta Turismo in het straatbeeld zult zien.<\/p>\n

De EV-portefeuille diversifi\u00ebren<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Maar de boodschap is duidelijk: Kia wil modellen bouwen die verder gaan dan praktische bedrijfswagens. Hoewel de SUV-verkopen van de fabrikant zeer winstgevend blijven, benadrukte Habib een interne drang om vormfactoren te verkennen die de betrokkenheid bij het rijden vooropstellen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De bredere Hyundai Motor Group, waar Kia deel van uitmaakt, heeft de technische haalbaarheid van dergelijke aansprekende elektrische modellen al aangetoond via zijn N-divisie. De onder deze naam gebouwde E-GMP 5 en 6 hebben wereldwijd lof geoogst, terwijl de innovatie van het schakelen in een elektrische auto alom geprezen is in de pers. Dat omzetten in verkopen is natuurlijk iets heel anders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Financieel knelpunt<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ondanks het feit dat Kia beschikt over het ontwerpkader en de technische middelen, wordt het bedrijf beperkt door de eerder genoemde economische aspecten van de batterij. De ontwikkeling van een laag gebouwd, krachtig batterij-elektrisch voertuig vergt een aanzienlijke kapitaalinvestering. Het is niet eenvoudig om deze tegen een toegankelijke prijs op de markt te brengen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Habib verklaarde expliciet dat een duurzame business case op dit moment simpelweg niet bestaat. Kia verwacht dat naarmate het gebruik van elektrische voertuigen toeneemt en de batterijkosten stabiliseren, de financi\u00eble barri\u00e8res voor de productie van een elektrische sportsedan lager zullen zijn.
