eerder aangekondigd<\/a>, komt een einde aan Zipse's termijn in de raad van bestuur en sluit een 35-jarige carri\u00e8re bij de Beierse autofabrikant af, waarvan zeven jaar als CEO.<\/p>\nHet offici\u00eble afscheid was voorspelbaar warm. Voorzitter Nicolas Peter van de Raad van Commissarissen gaf Zipse de eer \u201cde ontwikkeling van BMW Group vorm te hebben gegeven\u201d en het bedrijf op koers te hebben gehouden door Covid-19, ontwrichting van de toeleveringsketen, geopolitieke turbulentie en de moeilijkste technologische transitie die de auto-industrie in decennia heeft doorgemaakt.<\/p>\n
In BMW's eigen kader zal de naam Zipse vooral verbonden blijven aan de Neue Klasse, de nieuwe generatie elektrische en softwaregedefinieerde voertuigen waarop het concern vanaf 2026 zwaar inzet.<\/p>\n
Nooit een buitenstaander<\/h4>\n
Zipse was nooit een buitenstaander die BMW kwam opschudden. Hij werd in 1964 geboren in Heidelberg, studeerde werktuigbouwkunde en trad in 1991 in dienst bij BMW als ontwikkelings- en productiestagiair.<\/p>\n
Zijn carri\u00e8re bracht hem langs productieplanning, Zuid-Afrika, de MINI fabriek in Oxford, corporate planning en productstrategie. Voordat hij in 2019 CEO werd, was hij als directielid al verantwoordelijk voor de productie. Die achtergrond verklaart veel van zijn leiderschapsstijl: minder publieke showmanship, meer industri\u00eble discipline.<\/p>\n
Openheid van technologie<\/h4>\n
Zijn grootste strategische keuze was om zich te verzetten tegen het idee dat BMW zo snel mogelijk een uitsluitend elektrisch bedrijf moest worden. Onder Zipse verdedigde BMW wat het \u201ctechnologische openheid\u201d noemt: batterij-elektrische auto's, plug-in hybrides, effici\u00ebnte verbrandingsmotoren en, op de langere termijn, waterstof.<\/p>\n
Critici zagen dit als aarzeling. Voorstanders zeggen dat het BMW in staat stelde winstgevend te blijven terwijl de vraag, de laadinfrastructuur, de regelgeving en de kosten van grondstoffen zich wereldwijd in een heel verschillend tempo ontwikkelden.<\/p>\n
De cijfers geven beide partijen argumenten. BMW vermeed het soort diepe EV-gerelateerde rentabiliteitsproblemen die bij sommige rivalen te zien waren en bleef een van Europa's stabielere premiumfabrikanten.<\/p>\n
2,46 miljoen voertuigen<\/h4>\n
In 2025 verkocht de groep 2,46 miljoen voertuigen, waaronder meer dan 442.000 volledig elektrische modellen. Accu-elektrische auto's waren goed voor bijna 18% van de totale leveringen, terwijl de totale verkoop van ge\u00eblektrificeerde auto's de 642.000 eenheden passeerde.<\/p>\n
De winst voor belastingen van de groep bedroeg nog steeds meer dan \u20ac10 miljard, hoewel de EBIT-marge voor de auto-industrie met 5,3% onder de langetermijndoelstelling van BMW bleef.<\/p>\n
De prestatie van Zipse was dan ook niet om van BMW de elektrische koploper te maken, maar om het bedrijf financieel robuust te houden en tegelijkertijd een diepere transformatie voor te bereiden. Neue Klasse is bedoeld om die transformatie te zijn.<\/p>\n
Het brengt een nieuwe EV-architectuur, effici\u00ebntere batterijen, een nieuwe elektronica- en softwarebasis en een nieuw productieconcept. BMW presenteert het als een generatiereset die qua belang vergelijkbaar is met de oorspronkelijke Neue Klasse uit de jaren 1960, die het moderne merk BMW hielp defini\u00ebren.<\/p>\n
Onbeantwoorde vragen<\/h4>\n
Toch laat Zipse ook vragen onbeantwoord. De grootste is China. De verkoop van BMW daalde daar sterk in 2025, met 12,5%, omdat lokale elektrische merken de prijzenoorlog opvoerden en productcycli versnelden.<\/p>\n
Het bedrijf hoopt dat de iX3 en de bredere Neue Klasse-familie zijn positie op 's werelds grootste automarkt kan stabiliseren en vervolgens herstellen, maar dat bewijs is nu eerder aan Nedeljkovi\u0107 dan aan Zipse.<\/p>\n
Er waren ook veiligheidsproblemen. De terugroepactie van het remsysteem die in 2024 meer dan 1,5 miljoen auto's trof, dwong BMW om de vooruitzichten naar beneden bij te stellen en leidde tot hogere garantiekosten.<\/p>\n
Gevaar EGR-koeler<\/h4>\n
Maar een hardnekkiger reputatieprobleem is het al lang bestaande brandrisico van EGR-koelers in BMW dieselmodellen. Het probleem dateert van voor Zipse's termijn als CEO, maar het dook al op toen hij al BMW's productiechef was en hield aan gedurende zijn leiderschap.<\/p>\n
BMW erkende in 2018 dat koelvloeistoflekkage van de uitlaatgasrecirculatiekoeler zich kan vermengen met roetafzetting en bij hoge temperaturen in extreme gevallen tot brand kan leiden.<\/p>\n
BMW breidde een eerdere EGR-koelercampagne in 2018 uit naar ongeveer 1,6 miljoen dieselvoertuigen wereldwijd, nadat het probleem tot terugroepacties in Zuid-Korea en Europa had geleid. Maar dat was niet het einde van het dossier.<\/p>\n
In 2019 werd de campagne opnieuw uitgebreid met nog eens 232.000 voertuigen en in 2021 lanceerde BMW een nieuwe Amerikaanse veiligheidsterugroeping voor bepaalde dieselmodellen van 2013-2018, waaronder voertuigen die al onder de terugroeping van 2018 vielen, omdat ze een bijgewerkte EGR-koeler nodig hadden.<\/p>\n
In 2024 meldden Duitse media nog een grote uitbreiding die bijna 800.000 BMW diesels trof, alleen al in Duitsland, met mogelijk tot 1,9 miljoen getroffen voertuigen wereldwijd.<\/p>\n
De kwestie kwam deze week weer in de publieke belangstelling in Belgi\u00eb toen VRT's Pano<\/em> onderzocht hoe de terugroepacties rond miljoenen BMW dieselauto's al jaren aanslepen, met eigenaren, garagisten en internationale experts die getuigen over auto's die plotseling in brand vliegen.<\/p>\nOngetwijfeld speelt de reputatie van BMW als Duits topmerk hier ook een rol. Voor zover wij weten zijn er niet veel mensen lichamelijk gewond geraakt door de brandincidenten, maar de financi\u00eble gevolgen voor de BMW-eigenaren kunnen natuurlijk aanzienlijk zijn. Het Takata airbagschandaal had veel grotere gevolgen voor veel fabrikanten, ook met ernstig lichamelijk letsel en zelfs dodelijke slachtoffers, maar de reacties in de pers waren vaak discreter en vergoelijkender.<\/p>\n
We moeten ook vraagtekens zetten bij de regelgevende verantwoordelijkheid van de EU-autoriteiten. Europa, dat overal regels voor lijkt te hebben, is duidelijk nalatig in sommige aspecten van voertuigveiligheid en in de controles die het moet uitvoeren in deze zaken.<\/p>\n
BMW politiek gewicht geven<\/h4>\n
In Europa maakte Zipse's herhaalde kritiek op een vaste uitfasering van verbrandingsmotoren in 2035 hem tot een van de meest zichtbare tegenstanders van een eenzijdige regelgevende aanpak.<\/p>\n
Dat standpunt gaf BMW politiek gewicht, onder andere door zijn rol als voorzitter van de ACEA, maar het maakte hem ook tot een splijtzwam in het klimaatdebat.<\/p>\n
De benoeming van Nedeljkovi\u0107 duidt eerder op continu\u00efteit dan op een breuk. Net als Zipse is hij een BMW-lifter met een achtergrond in productie. Hij werd geboren in 1969, kwam in 1993 als stagiair bij het bedrijf en heeft fabrieken geleid in onder andere Oxford, Leipzig en M\u00fcnchen.<\/p>\n
Sinds 2019 zit hij als productiechef in de raad van bestuur van BMW en is hij nauw betrokken bij de voorbereiding van het wereldwijde productienetwerk op elektrificatie. Zijn contract als CEO loopt tot 2031.<\/p>\n
Zijn belangrijkste taak is nu de uitvoering. De strategie ligt grotendeels vast: de Neue Klasse zonder vertragingen lanceren, de EV's opschalen zonder de marges te vernietigen, BMW's premium prijsstelling verdedigen en het momentum in China herwinnen terwijl de Amerikaanse tarieven en Europa's trager dan verwachte EV-markt worden omzeild.<\/p>\n
Hij moet ook bewijzen dat BMW's flexibele aandrijflijnstrategie een voordeel kan blijven als de regelgeving strenger wordt en Chinese concurrenten snellere, goedkopere elektrische auto's naar Europa brengen.<\/p>\n
Nedeljkovi\u0107 erft een bedrijf dat verre van gebroken is, maar ook niet bepaald voorop loopt. Zipse's BMW bleef winstgevend, onafhankelijk en technologisch breed.<\/p>\n
Zijn opvolger moet nu laten zien of die voorzichtigheid wijsheid was en of Neue Klasse de voorzichtige overgang van BMW kan omzetten in een nieuwe groeifase.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
