Dat blijkt uit een studie over het openbaar vervoer in Europa, uitgevoerd door het Duitse onderzoeksinstituut \u00d6ko in opdracht van Greenpeace.<\/p>\n<p>Lange reistijden schrikken de Belgen af, en een andere zwakte van het openbaar vervoer is het grote verschil in beschikbaarheid tussen stedelijke en landelijke gebieden.<\/p>\n<p>De Belgen staan hierin niet alleen: de studie toont aan dat tot 56% van de Europese landen melden dat ze effectief \u201cafgesneden\u201d zijn van het openbaar vervoer omdat het niet beschikbaar is in hun regio.<\/p>\n<h4>Veel te lange reistijden<\/h4>\n<p>Belgi\u00eb staat in de middenmoot van Europa als het gaat om het gebruik van het openbaar vervoer. Meer dan 50% van de Belgische bevolking gebruikt het openbaar vervoer minder dan \u00e9\u00e9n keer per maand of nooit - een trend die volgens het rapport zorgwekkend is voor bijna alle Europese landen.<\/p>\n<p>Belgen die regelmatig (minstens \u00e9\u00e9n keer per week) de trein, metro, tram of bus nemen, vertegenwoordigen daarentegen een kwart van de totale bevolking.<\/p>\n<p>Maar de belangrijkste reden waarom het Belgisch openbaar vervoer zo weinig gebruikt wordt, zijn de lange reistijden, die opmerkelijk zijn voor een land dat zo compact is. Belgi\u00eb scoort opvallend slecht op dit vlak: 8% van de respondenten vermijdt het daarom volledig. Daarmee ligt Belgi\u00eb bijna dubbel zo hoog als het EU-gemiddelde en komt het op de een-na-laatste plaats. Alleen Sloveni\u00eb (9%) doet het nog slechter; Cyprus volgt op de derde plaats (7%).<\/p>\n<p>De reistijden zijn vooral lang voor kleine steden en landelijke gebieden - 11% van de Belgische beroepsbevolking moet meer dan 60 minuten pendelen (enkele reis) - een belangrijke boosdoener: ongeveer drie keer meer mensen dan het EU-gemiddelde maken daardoor geen gebruik van het openbaar vervoer (10,6% en 8,7% in Belgi\u00eb tegenover 3,5% en 2,8% in de EU).<\/p>\n<p>Het rapport vermeldt ook expliciet dat Belgi\u00eb, samen met Sloveni\u00eb en Denemarken, een van de landen is met het hoogste percentage mensen die een te lange reistijd opgeven als reden om geen gebruik te maken van het openbaar vervoer, zowel in stedelijke als landelijke gebieden.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-186538 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-20-at-10.06.14.png?resize=640%2C431&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-20-at-10.06.14.png?w=1754&amp;ssl=1 1754w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-20-at-10.06.14.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Geen openbaar vervoer beschikbaar<\/h4>\n<p>Openbaar vervoer is er soms ook gewoon niet of rijdt te onregelmatig. Nogmaals, dit is zeker een probleem in landelijke gebieden: het verschil in beschikbaarheid van openbaar vervoer tussen stedelijke en landelijke gebieden in Belgi\u00eb is meer dan tien keer zo groot.<\/p>\n<p>Als gevolg daarvan haakt 35% van de inwoners van plattelandsgemeenten onmiddellijk af (29,3% in de EU). De meeste van deze gemeenten liggen in Walloni\u00eb, maar Vlaanderen telt er ook een 50-tal. Het gaat bijvoorbeeld om Aalter, Oudsbergen en Hoogstraten.<\/p>\n<h4>Toegankelijkheid is ook een probleem<\/h4>\n<p>Een ander punt van zorg is de toegankelijkheid. Belgi\u00eb doet het ook niet zo goed op dit gebied, maar de kloof met het Europese gemiddelde is kleiner (4,6% van de mensen geeft het op in Belgi\u00eb tegenover 3,4% in de EU), hoewel Belgi\u00eb in dit opzicht tot de top 5 van Europa behoort, naast Itali\u00eb, Duitsland en Frankrijk. Vooral mensen van 65 jaar en ouder hebben het moeilijk met de fysieke toegang tot het openbaar vervoer (11,8% in Belgi\u00eb tegenover 7,1% in de EU).<\/p>\n<p>De enige indicator in het rapport waar Belgi\u00eb het goed doet, is betaalbaarheid. Voor slechts 1,7% van de Belgen is dit een \"dealbreaker\". In de EU ligt het gemiddelde op 2,1%. Dat cijfer is ook veel beter dan in buurlanden zoals Nederland en Duitsland, met resultaten van respectievelijk 4,4% en 5,5%.<\/p>\n<h4>Harde realiteit<\/h4>\n<p>Tot slot een opmerkelijke opmerking met betrekking tot Europa: Alle geanalyseerde Europese landen presteren onder het Europese gemiddelde op ten minste een van de 11 indicatoren voor vervoersarmoede, waarbij Duitsland, Frankrijk en Bulgarije de grootste verschillen vertonen. Tsjechi\u00eb, Servi\u00eb en Slowakije zijn de landen met de beste resultaten voor de geanalyseerde indicatoren.<\/p>\n<p>Het rapport, getiteld \u201cAccess Denied: Transport Poverty in Europe\u201d stelt dat in ongeveer 90% van de Europese landen meer dan de helft van de bevolking niet regelmatig gebruik maakt van het openbaar vervoer. Tot 56% van de bevolking in Europese landen zegt effectief \u201cafgesneden\u201d te zijn van het openbaar vervoer omdat het simpelweg niet beschikbaar is in hun regio.<\/p>\n<p>Dit gebrek aan alternatieven dwingt 19% van de bevolking om een auto te kopen, waardoor de kosten van huishoudens en de CO2-uitstoot toenemen.<\/p>\n<p>Het rapport belicht ook een demografische kloof: vrouwen en oudere volwassenen hebben onevenredig veel last van veiligheidsproblemen en problemen met fysieke toegankelijkheid, waardoor openbaar vervoer vaak een onhaalbare optie is.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-186539 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-20-at-10.04.07.png?resize=640%2C422&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-20-at-10.04.07.png?w=1618&amp;ssl=1 1618w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Screenshot-2026-05-20-at-10.04.07.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Aanbevelingen<\/h4>\n<p>Yuri Thijs, woordvoerder van Greenpeace Belgi\u00eb, roept daarom op tot actie: \u201cMobiliteit is geen luxe; het is fundamenteel voor een menswaardig leven; We roepen overheden op om prioriteit te geven aan een inclusief openbaar vervoersysteem: betaalbaar, toegankelijk, veilig en betrouwbaar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De auteurs van het onderzoeksrapport doen ook aanbevelingen om het openbaar vervoer aantrekkelijker te maken. Ze pleiten onder andere voor sociale vervoerpassen als een belangrijke beleidsmaatregel, vooral voor kwetsbare groepen; het opnemen van openbaar vervoer in de stadsplanning zodat nieuwe woonwijken bij voorkeur vanaf het begin worden uitgerust met goede verbindingen; en het barri\u00e8revrij maken van de infrastructuur voor openbaar vervoer voor mensen met beperkte mobiliteit, met liften, hellingen en verhoogde voetpaden.<\/p>\n<p>Andere voorstellen zijn het verbeteren van de veiligheid door betere verlichting op haltes, bewakingscamera's en alarmknoppen, evenals een grotere aanwezigheid van personeel, met name op routes met een hoog risico en tijdens late nachtdiensten.<\/p>\n<p>Als gerichte oplossingen voor kwetsbare groepen pleiten ze voor specifieke aandacht voor de fysieke toegankelijkheid en veiligheid van mensen van 65 jaar en ouder, omdat zij in alle landen onevenredig zwaar worden getroffen, en veiligheidsmaatregelen zoals gesubsidieerde nachttaxi's voor vrouwen als kortetermijnoplossing, gecombineerd met structurele integratie van een genderperspectief in stedelijke mobiliteitsplannen - naar het voorbeeld van Barcelona.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly half of Belgians never use public transportation.
