Europa en China hebben nu een beslissende drempel overschreden. Hun verschuiving weg van auto's met verbrandingsmotoren is zelfbewegend geworden.<\/p>\n<p>Een onderzoeksteam van de Universiteit van Exeter heeft een van de meest invloedrijke studies in de recente geschiedenis van de mobiliteit gepubliceerd: een collegiaal getoetste analyse die aantoont dat het gebruik van elektrische voertuigen in Europa en China een sociaal-technisch omslagpunt heeft overschreden. Voorbij deze drempel wordt de neergang van de fossiel aangedreven motor in feite onomkeerbaar.<\/p>\n<p>Het artikel met de titel \u201cEvidence of a cascading positive tipping point towards electric vehicles\u201d is gebaseerd op wereldwijde verkoopgegevens van 2016 tot 2023 in 32 landen.<\/p>\n<h4>Wat de gegevens laten zien<b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p>De verkoop van EV's is niet alleen gegroeid, maar zelfs exponentieel. In alle onderzochte markten verdubbelde de gecombineerde elektrische en plug-in hybride vloot ongeveer elke 1,5 jaar. Maar er zijn regionale verschillen. In China was de verdubbelingstijd slechts 12 maanden; in de EU 1,3 jaar.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tegelijkertijd begon de verkoop van conventionele auto's rond 2019 aan een structurele daling, die zich nooit meer te boven kwam. Interessant is dat de onderzoekers statistische modellen toepasten die vergelijkbaar zijn met de modellen die in de klimaatwetenschap worden gebruikt. Hiermee probeerden ze \u201cvroege waarschuwingssignalen\u201d te identificeren die altijd voorafgaan aan een kantelmoment. Ze vonden precies die patronen in de gegevens over het marktaandeel van conventionele voertuigen in Europa en China vlak voor de pandemie. Het valt samen met het moment dat de Tesla Model Y op de markt kwam en al snel 's werelds best verkochte auto werd, en met Duitse autofabrikanten die serieus de EV-markt betraden.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Professor Tim Lenton, een van de hoofdauteurs van het onderzoek, legt het belang van het rapport uit: \u201dWe tonen voor de eerste keer in marktgegevens, vroege opportuniteitssignalen v\u00f3\u00f3r een positief kantelpunt waar het gebruik van EV's - en de afname van auto's op fossiele brandstof - zichzelf gaat voortstuwen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Waarom wordt het zelfversterkend<b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Het omslagpunt gaat niet alleen over verkoopvolume. Het gaat over in elkaar grijpende feedbacklussen. E\u00e9n voorbeeld: de vari\u00ebteit aan EV-modellen is sterk toegenomen, terwijl de vari\u00ebteit aan nieuwe voertuigen met verbrandingsmotor juist is afgenomen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>De verwachtingen van de consument gaan dezelfde kant op. Pariteit in aankoop is voorspelbaar: de studie voorspelt dat dit tussen dit jaar en 2028 het geval zal zijn in Europa en China, en tussen 2026 en 2030 in de VS en Zuid-Korea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnologische verandering kan plotseling en abrupt plaatsvinden,\u201d zei professor Jean-Francois Mercure, directeur van Exeter Climate Policy. \u201cHet is het resultaat van veel beleidsinspanningen in de jaren 2000-2010, die hebben geleid tot het opbouwen van een kritische massa, die vrij moeilijk terug te draaien zou zijn.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Koolstofbelasting werkt niet<b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Het artikel wijst dus op overheidsbeleid als drijvende kracht achter het bereiken van het omslagpunt. De combinatie die de overgang in Europa en China aanstuurde waren subsidies aan de vraagzijde en mandaten aan de aanbodzijde, oftewel eisen aan de verkoop van EV's door fabrikanten die ervoor zorgden dat betaalbare EV's daadwerkelijk beschikbaar waren.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Verrassend genoeg vonden de onderzoekers dat koolstofheffingen of een belasting op fossiele brandstoffen \u201cweinig of geen\u201d rol hebben gespeeld. Voor regelgevende instanties die de nadruk hebben gelegd op het beprijzen van koolstof als hun belangrijkste hefboom voor het koolstofarm maken van de economie, zoals de EU, is dit een ongemakkelijke bevinding.<\/p>\n<p>In de studie wordt echter geconcludeerd dat het huidige tempo nog steeds achterblijft bij de toezeggingen van Europa voor 2050 en China voor 2060. Het beleid moet nu een proces versnellen dat al aan de gang is. Een snellere uitrol in leidende markten heeft ook gevolgen voor de rest van de wereld: de kosten van batterijen blijven dalen, waardoor ze toegankelijk worden voor markten die nog buiten de omslagzone liggen.<\/p>\n<h4>Gesteund door het IEA<\/h4>\n<p>Een van die zones is de Verenigde Staten. De Amerikaanse verdubbelingstijd in de gegevens van de studie bedroeg 1,7 jaar, wat al trager was dan China of Europa, en het beeld is sindsdien verslechterd. Na de intrekking van federale aankoopstimulansen in 2025 daalde de verkoop van EV's in de VS met 28% j-o-j in Q1 2026. De studie beweert niet dat de VS het omslagpunt heeft bereikt, en de huidige gegevens bieden weinig optimisme dat dit snel het geval zal zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Deze academische bevindingen komen naast de Global EV Outlook 2026 van het IEA, die voorspelt dat er dit jaar wereldwijd 23 miljoen EV's worden verkocht, wat neerkomt op 30% van alle nieuwe auto's. Chinese autofabrikanten leveren nu 60% van alle EV's die wereldwijd verkocht worden.
