Op initiatief van DVV Verzekeringen heeft het Vias Instituut \u201cMissie: Veilig naar school\u201d, een educatief videospel waarin kinderen virtueel hun route naar school oefenen voordat ze deze in het echt afleggen.<\/p>\n

Het gratis spel, dat vooral gericht is op basisschoolkinderen van groep 4 tot en met 6, zal vanaf half augustus beschikbaar zijn voor alle scholen in Belgi\u00eb, zodat kinderen hun route naar school kunnen oefenen en potenti\u00eble gevaren kunnen herkennen voor de start van het nieuwe schooljaar.<\/p>\n

Veel schoolkinderen slachtoffer van een verkeersongeval<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u201cBasisschoolkinderen kunnen soms kwetsbaar zijn in het verkeer,\u201d zegt Stef Willems van het Vias Instituut. \u201cDe drukte van het gemotoriseerde verkeer en een infrastructuur die niet altijd logisch of vergevingsgezind is, maken het voor kinderen die zich nog ontwikkelen extra moeilijk om verkeerssituaties correct in te schatten.\u201d<\/p>\n

De cijfers bevestigen zeker Willems verklaring. In 2024 raakten in Vlaanderen meer dan 300 kinderen gewond bij verkeersongevallen op weg van of naar school. De voorbije tien jaar raakten maar liefst 4.465 jonge voetgangers en fietsers in de lagere school gewond in het verkeer.<\/p>\n

3D-omgeving<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Door een spel te ontwikkelen hopen de makers deze cijfers omlaag te brengen. \u201cMission: Veilig naar school\u201d is gebouwd op Roblox, het platform waar vandaag de dag al miljoenen kinderen spelen. \u201cDat is geen toeval, want op deze manier is verkeerseducatie niet alleen een verplichte activiteit, maar een spel dat ze zelf kiezen om te spelen,\u201d legt Willems uit.<\/p>\n

Door open-source kaartgegevens te gebruiken, wordt de feitelijke route van elke leerling naar school omgezet in een 3D-omgeving. Ook aan de online veiligheid van de kinderen is gedacht. Er is geen persoonlijke informatie nodig om het spel te spelen, hoewel je natuurlijk wel je huisadres moet invoeren om de route naar school te simuleren, en spelers zijn beperkt tot een gesloten omgeving, dus er is geen mogelijkheid tot interactie met anderen.<\/p>\n

Voor de duidelijkheid: zowel scholen als gezinnen kunnen zich aanmelden en het pakket gratis downloaden. Scholen die zich aanmelden kunnen hun leerlingen ook hun kennis laten testen door deel te nemen aan de wedstrijd \u201cVeiligste klas van de provincie\u201d. De school kan \u20ac2.500 winnen en gepersonaliseerde helmen voor de leerlingen in de winnende klas.<\/p>\n

Volwassenen blijven het voorbeeld geven<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u201cHet is nuttig voor kinderen om potenti\u00eble gevaren te leren herkennen door situaties uit de eerste hand te ervaren en te leren om beslissingen te nemen,\u201d zegt Willems. \u201cWe moeten kinderen aanmoedigen en inspireren om naar school te lopen of te fietsen.\u201d Maar Willems benadrukt ook dat om kinderen te leren veiliger naar school te gaan, het ook belangrijk is dat bestuurders van gemotoriseerde voertuigen zich altijd aan de snelheidslimieten houden en niet rijden terwijl ze zijn afgeleid of onder invloed zijn.<\/p>\n
