De Belgisch-Limburgse gemeenten Lommel en Pelt worden vanaf juni een rustregio voor slimme en autonome voertuigen. Burgemeester Bob Nijs (CD&V) van Lommel en zijn ambtgenoot Dennis Fransen (CD&V) van Pelt hebben daartoe een engagementsbrief ondertekend. In eerste instantie zullen de testritten plaatsvinden op de testsite van Ford in Lommel en later op de openbare weg.<\/p>\n

Door hun wegen open te stellen voor het testen van zelfrijdende voertuigen, sluiten de twee gemeenten zich aan bij het Europese CCAM Proving Region project in de hoop van Noord-Limburg een innovatieve mobiliteitsregio binnen Europa te maken. De provinciale ontwikkelingsmaatschappij POM Limburg brengt verschillende Vlaamse en Nederlandse partners samen in dit project, dat wordt geleid door het technologiebedrijf imec.<\/p>\n

Realistische omstandigheden<\/h4>\n

Ondanks de aanzienlijke technologische vooruitgang op het gebied van autonome voertuigen blijft het aantal testvoertuigen op de openbare weg in Belgi\u00eb voorlopig beperkt.<\/p>\n

Openbaarvervoermaatschappij De Lijn testte onlangs een zelfrijdende minibus<\/a> in Leuven; Colruyt testte een zelfrijdende bestelwagen; en het Havenbedrijf Antwerpen-Brugge organiseerde eerder al de eerste autonome vrachtwagen<\/a> reis op de openbare weg in Belgi\u00eb.<\/p>\n

Bovendien kreeg Tesla onlangs toestemming om het Tesla FSD-systeem te testen op de Belgische wegen, een geavanceerd systeem voor bestuurdersassistentie dat het voertuig quasi-autonoom laat rijden, met functies zoals sturen, binnen de rijstrook blijven en van rijstrook veranderen, altijd onder voortdurend toezicht van de bestuurder.<\/p>\n

Maar met het CCAM Proving Region project, waarbij CCAM staat voor Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility, willen de partners daar verandering in brengen. Als onderdeel van het project testen bedrijven en onderzoeksinstellingen stap voor stap zelfrijdende voertuigtechnologie onder realistische omstandigheden.<\/p>\n

Over nationale grenzen heen<\/h4>\n

Vooraleer de voertuigen getest worden op de openbare weg in Lommel en Pelt, zullen ze eerst een reeks testen ondergaan op afgesloten infrastructuur, zoals de Ford Lommel Proving Ground of het bedrijventerrein Campus Noord in Pelt. Tijdens deze tests wordt onder meer onderzocht hoe de voertuigen omgaan met andere weggebruikers en hoe ze reageren in complexe verkeerssituaties.<\/p>\n

Door de ligging vlakbij Nederland kunnen de tests ook over de grens plaatsvinden, waarbij de nadruk ligt op verschillende verkeersregels en digitale systemen in beide landen, in zowel stedelijke als landelijke gebieden en op snelwegen in Vlaanderen en Nederland.
