{"id":187205,"date":"2026-06-04T12:15:02","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T10:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/?p=187205"},"modified":"2026-06-04T10:43:58","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T08:43:58","slug":"bmw-keeps-electric-mini-production-out-of-oxford-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/06\/04\/bmw-keeps-electric-mini-production-out-of-oxford-for-now\/","title":{"rendered":"BMW houdt elektrische Mini-productie voorlopig weg uit Oxford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BMW Group heroverweegt naar verluidt plannen om Mini's fabriek in Oxford te elektrificeren vanwege dreigende handelsbelemmeringen en stijgende kosten, waardoor twijfel ontstaat over een modernisering van de vestiging op de middellange termijn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2023 zal de BMW Group <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2023\/09\/12\/bmw-keeps-the-electric-mini-in-its-birthplace-oxford\/\">aangekondigde plannen<\/a> om vanaf 2026 twee nieuwe volledig elektrische Mini-modellen te produceren in de fabriek in Oxford, met een volledige overgang naar batterij-elektrische voertuigen tegen 2030. Deze modellen zouden de elektrische Mini Cooper als driedeursvariant en de compacte crossover Mini Aceman omvatten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De versies met verbrandingsmotor van de nieuwe Cooper-generatie, onthuld op de IAA 2023, zijn sinds 2024 in productie in Oxford. Het lijkt nu echter onwaarschijnlijk dat de geplande productie van de elektrische varianten doorgaat zoals gepland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het Duitse zakenblad WirtschaftsWoche meldde onlangs, onder vermelding van \u201ceen invloedrijke insider uit de kring van BMW's nieuwe CEO Milan Nedeljkovi\u0107\u201d, dat de productie van Mini wel eens onrendabel zou kunnen worden door de dreigende tarieven tussen de EU en het VK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Als de handelsregels na de Brexit, zoals gepland, op 1 januari 2027 van kracht worden, kan BMW \u201cgeen elektrische auto's meer produceren en verkopen in de belangrijkste Europese fabriek van Mini\u201d, vertelde de insider aan het tijdschrift.<\/p>\n<h4>Regels van Oorsprong<\/h4>\n<p>De kwestie komt voort uit de zogenaamde oorsprongsregels, die het VK en de Europese Unie na Brexit zijn overeengekomen. Deze regels voor elektrische voertuigen zouden aanvankelijk begin 2024 van kracht worden, maar werden in 2023 door de lidstaten drie jaar uitgesteld, waardoor de invoering tot 2027 werd uitgesteld.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe regels bepalen dat elektrische auto's alleen belastingvrij kunnen worden verhandeld als ten minste 45% van hun onderdelen in de EU of het VK is geproduceerd,\u201d legt WirtschaftsWoche uit. \u201cVoor batterijen ligt de drempel zelfs nog hoger, op 60%. Voor voertuigen die niet aan deze eisen voldoen, geldt een tarief van 10%.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Vrijwel onmogelijk<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor elektrische Mini's wordt het vrijwel onmogelijk geacht om aan deze drempels te voldoen. BMW zal daarom naar verwachting geconfronteerd worden met het 10%-tarief, tenzij overheden de oorsprongsregels wijzigen of verder uitstellen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tegelijkertijd heeft Mini te maken met stijgende productiekosten. Volgens WirtschaftsWoche blijven de winstmarges klein, vooral voor de meer betaalbare modelplatforms van het merk. BMW is daarom naar verluidt terughoudend om de fabriek in Oxford onder de huidige omstandigheden te moderniseren en te elektrificeren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al in het begin van 2025 meldden Britse media, waaronder de BBC, dat de BMW Group voor onbepaalde tijd <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2025\/02\/26\/bmw-puts-plans-for-building-mini-evs-in-oxford-on-ice\/\">heeft zijn plannen om elektrische auto's te produceren in de fabriek in Oxford uitgesteld<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGezien de vele onzekerheden waarmee de auto-industrie wordt geconfronteerd, bekijkt de BMW Group momenteel de timing voor de herintroductie van de batterij-elektrische Mini-productie in Oxford\u201d, verklaarde het bedrijf destijds.<\/p>\n<p>De voorbereidende werkzaamheden voor de productie van EV's in de fabriek zijn stopgezet, maar andere moderniseringsmaatregelen, zoals logistieke, gaan door. Bovendien heeft BMW een overheidssubsidie van 60 miljoen pond geweigerd, maar blijft het bedrijf \u201cin gesprek\u201d met de autoriteiten.<\/p>\n<h4>Voornamelijk geproduceerd in... China<\/h4>\n<p>De elektrische Mini Cooper, verkrijgbaar in drie varianten, Cooper E, Cooper SE en John Cooper Works Electric, wordt voorlopig exclusief in China geproduceerd en naar Europa ge\u00ebxporteerd. De productie in Oxford is momenteel beperkt tot de ICE-versies. Rekening houdend met de importtarieven die Mini moet betalen op auto's die in Europa worden verkocht, moeten de productiekosten van de auto's in China een stuk lager liggen.<\/p>\n<p>De Aceman, Mini's eerste volledig elektrische modelreeks, was <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2024\/04\/25\/new-electric-aceman-aims-to-be-minis-bestseller\/\">onthuld in China in 2024<\/a> en wordt daar ook geproduceerd. In feite wordt alleen de elektrische Mini Countryman in Europa geproduceerd.
