Het Havenbedrijf Antwerpen-Brugge heeft Rob Smeets aangesteld als nieuwe CEO. Smeets, de huidige interim CEO, heeft een termijn van zes jaar gekregen en volgt Jacques Vandermeiren op, die zijn vertrek in april aankondigde<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Smeets staat voor een enorme taak. De komende 10 jaar moet de haven van Antwerpen-Brugge ongeveer 5 miljard euro veiligstellen voor tal van projecten.<\/p>\n

Kent het bedrijf door en door<\/h4>\n

De Nederlander Rob Smeets (56) is geen onbekende in de haven van Antwerpen-Brugge. Hij werkt al meer dan 20 jaar voor het havenbedrijf, onder meer als hoofd van de Sleepbootmaatschappij, directeur operaties en directeur nautische operaties. Na het vertrek van Vandermeiren was hij ook interim-directeur.<\/p>\n

\u201cRob kent het Havenbedrijf en de haven als geen ander. Hij is een vertrouwd gezicht zowel binnen als buiten de organisatie, kent onze stakeholders en is bedreven in het verzoenen van verschillende belangen,\u201d zegt voorzitter Johan Klaps over de beslissing van de Raad van Bestuur.<\/p>\n

Belangrijke uitdagingen<\/h4>\n

Toch staat de nieuwe CEO voor belangrijke uitdagingen om de toonaangevende positie van de Haven van Antwerpen-Brugge als wereldhaven verder uit te bouwen. De komende 10 jaar zal het Havenbedrijf ongeveer 5 miljard euro moeten vrijmaken voor verschillende projecten.<\/p>\n

Er zijn bijvoorbeeld nieuwe sluizen nodig in Zeebrugge, de haven van Doel wordt uitgebreid met een nieuw getijdendok, de Waaslandhaven wordt verder ontwikkeld en er zijn infrastructuurwerken gepland voor de Europa Terminal (de allereerste getijdencontainerterminal in de haven van Antwerpen), het grootste project.<\/p>\n

De modernste containerschepen zijn simpelweg te groot en te diep voor de huidige infrastructuur. Daarom zal de 1.200 meter lange kademuur worden verdiept van 13,5 meter naar 16 meter en zullen er 12 geavanceerde semi-automatische kadekranen worden ge\u00efnstalleerd. Na voltooiing zal de terminal schepen tot 25.000 TEU en 400 meter lengte kunnen ontvangen en zal de jaarlijkse behandelingscapaciteit toenemen van 1,7 miljoen TEU tot 2,5 miljoen TEU.<\/p>\n

Nieuwe strategische fase<\/h4>\n

Ongeveer 1,9 miljard van de 5 miljard komt van de Vlaamse overheid, maar voor de rest moet het Havenbedrijf extra kapitaal zoeken via bankleningen en kapitaalinjecties.<\/p>\n

Dat is precies het grote verschil tussen Smeets en Vandermeiren. Tot nu toe kon het Havenbedrijf veel investeringen uit eigen middelen financieren, maar de haven gaat nu een nieuwe strategische fase in met een sterke focus op kosteneffici\u00ebntie en duurzame waardecreatie, en dus op het zoeken naar externe investeringen.<\/p>\n

En niet onbelangrijk: De Waaslandhaven, een belangrijk onderdeel van de haven van Antwerpen-Brugge, verloor vorig jaar bijna 2% van zijn maritieme trafiek. Uit cijfers van Statbel blijkt dat de trafiek in alle Vlaamse zeehavens met 3% is gedaald.<\/p>\n

Rotterdam inhalen als grootste haven van Europa leek een paar jaar geleden nog tot de mogelijkheden te behoren, maar is sindsdien opnieuw een Vlaamse wensdroom geworden. De Nederlanders controleren ongeveer 30% van de containermarkt, terwijl Antwerpen-Brugge 29% in handen heeft.
