Als de Euregio het prestigieuze project voor de bouw van de Einstein Telescoop binnenhaalt, komt hiervoor een spoorwegterrein van meer dan 44 hectare in Montzen, vlakbij Voeren, beschikbaar.<\/p>\n

Zowel de Belgische spoorweginfrastructuurbeheerder Infrabel als de Belgische nationale spoorwegmaatschappij NMBS hebben hiervoor hun informele goedkeuring gegeven.<\/p>\n

Meetinstrument van wereldklasse<\/h4>\n

De Einstein Telescoop moet een instrument van wereldklasse worden voor het detecteren van zwaartekrachtgolven. Op deze manier kunnen onderzoekers de vorming van zwarte gaten, de structuur van neutronensterren en de aard van het heelal direct na de oerknal onderzoeken.<\/p>\n

Samen met de regio's Sardini\u00eb in Itali\u00eb en Saksen in Duitsland, bieden Nederland, Belgi\u00eb en Noordrijn-Westfalen gezamenlijk op het project.<\/p>\n

De voorgestelde locatie ligt in het grensgebied van Zuid-Limburg met Walloni\u00eb en de Vlaamse gemeente Voeren. De bouwkosten worden geschat op 2,3 miljard euro en er wordt verwacht dat de telescoop minstens 50 jaar zal werken.<\/p>\n

Het bidbook moet uiterlijk in december 2026 klaar zijn. De selectie van de locatie tussen de Euregio Maas-Rijn grensregio, Sardini\u00eb, en Saksen zal plaatsvinden in het tweede deel van, of tegen het einde van, 2027.<\/p>\n

250 tot 300 meter onder de grond<\/h4>\n

Maar als Vlaanderen het project binnenhaalt, zullen Infrabel en NMBS een spoorwegterrein van meer dan 44 hectare ter beschikking stellen voor de bouwfase van de ondergrondse Einstein Telescoop - het instrument zal 250 tot 300 meter onder de grond worden gebouwd. De twee bedrijven hebben hiervoor gisteren hun informele goedkeuring gegeven.<\/p>\n

De locatie zal dan dienen als logistiek knooppunt voor de tijdelijke opslag en verwerking van grond en materialen. Het onlangs gemoderniseerde spoorwegnet, dat vier lange goederensporen tot 750 meter omvat, kan een duurzame logistiek garanderen in het geval van een toekomstige uitvoering van het project.<\/p>\n

Duurzaam<\/h4>\n

\u201cHoe meer we per spoor kunnen vervoeren en hoe beter we onze grond en materialen kunnen verwerken, hoe duurzamer de operatie wordt\u201d, zegt Hans Plets, voorzitter van de werkgroep EMR van Einstein Telescope. \u201cWe zijn dan ook bijzonder verheugd dat Infrabel en NMBS ons verkennende gesprek formaliseren met deze Letter of Support.\u201d<\/p>\n
