{"id":187776,"date":"2026-06-12T12:14:32","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T10:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/?p=187776"},"modified":"2026-06-12T12:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T10:18:09","slug":"provost-draws-the-line-renault-eyes-drones-not-defence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/06\/12\/provost-draws-the-line-renault-eyes-drones-not-defence\/","title":{"rendered":"Provost trekt een grens: Renault richt zich op drones, niet op defensie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>De Renault-groep zal zich niet omvormen tot een defensiebedrijf, nu de Europese auto-industrie te maken heeft met Chinese fabrikanten van elektrische auto\u2019s en het continent zich haast om zijn militaire capaciteit weer op te bouwen.<\/p>\n<p>Dat was de boodschap van Fran\u00e7ois Provost, CEO van de Renault Groep, in een interview met Bas Kurstjens van De Tijd en andere media tijdens het Automotive News Europe Congress dat vorige week in Brussel plaatsvond.<\/p>\n<p>Op de vraag of defensiecontracten een nieuwe toekomst zouden kunnen betekenen voor een van de grootste autofabrikanten van Europa, was Provost categorisch: \u201cRenault zal geen defensiebedrijf worden.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Chorus-droneproject<\/h4>\n<p>Deze uitspraak is opvallend omdat Renault al de eerste concrete stappen in deze sector heeft gezet. Het Franse concern is samen met Turgis Gaillard betrokken bij het Chorus-droneproject, waarbij de assemblage op de vestiging in Le Mans gepland staat. Alleen in een echte oorlogseconomie, zo stelde hij, zou defensie een belangrijke divisie voor de groep kunnen worden.<\/p>\n<h4>Niet zoals andere Europese autofabrikanten<\/h4>\n<p>Met dat standpunt onderscheidt Renault zich van sommige Europese concurrenten. Volkswagen staat onder veel grotere druk om een nieuwe bestemming te vinden voor zijn fabriek in Osnabr\u00fcck, waar de productie van de T-Roc medio 2027 zal worden stopgezet, waardoor 2.300 banen op de tocht komen te staan.<\/p>\n<p>VW heeft mogelijkheden op defensiegebied voor de locatie onderzocht, terwijl CEO Oliver Blume defensie heeft aangemerkt als een mogelijke reddingsboei voor onderbenutte productiecapaciteit in de automobielsector.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes-Benz richt zich ook steeds meer op voertuigen die verband houden met defensie. Het bedrijf is een samenwerking aangegaan met het in M\u00fcnchen gevestigde Tytan Technologies voor de ontwikkeling van op voertuigen gebaseerde systemen ter bestrijding van drones, waarbij de G-Klasse en de Sprinter als platform worden gebruikt.<\/p>\n<p>In tegenstelling tot Renault heeft Mercedes al een lange traditie op het gebied van speciale voertuigen voor beveiliging, reddingsoperaties en militair gebruik. De defensieactiviteiten van het bedrijf zijn nog steeds beperkt, maar worden steeds vaker aangemerkt als een strategisch groeigebied.<\/p>\n<h4>De Europese waardeketen in de automobielsector beschermen<\/h4>\n<p>De nadruk van de rector ligt ergens anders. Zijn voornaamste zorg is niet hoe de fabrieken gevuld moeten worden, maar hoe de Europese toeleveringsketen voor de automobielsector beschermd kan worden. \u201cWe hebben geen overcapaciteit in onze fabrieken\u201d, zei hij. Daarom heeft Renault geen behoefte aan het soort defensieve maatregelen dat andere fabrikanten nu overwegen, zoals het produceren van auto's van Chinese merken in Europese fabrieken.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens Provost schuilt het echte gevaar dieper in de toeleveringsketen. De assemblage van auto\u2019s vertegenwoordigt slechts een klein deel van de waarde van een voertuig, stelt hij, terwijl het grootste deel van de waarde bij toeleveranciers, engineering, accu\u2019s en onderdelen ligt.<\/p>\n<p>Als Chinese merken auto\u2019s in Europa assembleren maar de meeste belangrijke onderdelen uit hun eigen toeleveringsketen blijven importeren, zouden Europese leveranciers toch aan schaalgrootte en relevantie kunnen inboeten.<\/p>\n<p>Op dat punt loopt de visie van de rector haaks op die van Stellantis. De Frans-Italiaanse groep heeft via haar samenwerking met Leapmotor voor een veel pragmatischer aanpak gekozen.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis en Leapmotor zijn van plan om in Spanje elektrische voertuigen te gaan bouwen, waaronder de Leapmotor B10 en een nieuwe elektrische SUV van het merk Opel. Voor Stellantis helpt deze overeenkomst om onbenutte capaciteit te benutten en de toegang tot betaalbare EV-technologie te versnellen. Volgens Provost werken dergelijke overeenkomsten alleen voor Europa als ze ook zorgen voor meer lokale inkoop van onderdelen en engineering.<\/p>\n<h4>Onderdelen in Europa<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cIk denk dat het voor Europa echt de beste aanpak is om op basis van deze strategie een overeenkomst met China te sluiten,\u201d zei Provost in een apart gesprek in Brussel, waarbij hij aanvoerde dat Chinese autofabrikanten moeten worden aangemoedigd om onderdelen in Europa in te kopen, en niet alleen maar auto\u2019s hier te assembleren.<\/p>\n<p>In het interview met De Tijd vergeleek hij dit idee met wat China drie decennia geleden van westerse autofabrikanten eiste, toen markttoegang gepaard ging met verwachtingen op het gebied van lokale productie en het delen van technologie.<\/p>\n<p>Tegelijkertijd profiteert Renault van een plotselinge stijging van de vraag naar elektrische auto\u2019s. Volgens Provost is het aantal bestellingen voor elektrische auto\u2019s in landen als Frankrijk en Duitsland sterk gestegen sinds de oorlog in Iran de brandstofprijzen heeft opgedreven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe overschrijden momenteel de capaciteit van onze leveranciers vanwege de oorlog in Iran\u201d, vertelde hij aan Reuters, waarbij hij eraan toevoegde dat Renault \u201czijn prognoses\u201d voor de verkoop van elektrische auto's \"al heeft bijgesteld\". In het interview met De Tijd zei hij dat particuliere kopers, en niet zozeer wagenparkklanten, de markt nu aansturen, met name huishoudens die een tweede auto vervangen.<\/p>\n<p>De concurrentiesituatie verandert snel. Volkswagen, Stellantis en Renault hebben Brussel gezamenlijk opgeroepen om een eenvoudig \u201cMade in Europe\u201d-kader in te voeren, waarbij auto\u2019s die in de EU worden verkocht voor 70% aan lokale waarde zouden moeten vertegenwoordigen.<\/p>\n<p>Hun gezamenlijke boodschap is dat Europa behoefte heeft aan betaalbare elektrische auto\u2019s, steun voor batterijtechnologie en flexibiliteit in de regelgeving, maar hun strategie\u00ebn lopen uiteen.<\/p>\n<p>Renault wil de waardeketen lokaal houden zonder zijn fabrieken open te stellen voor Chinese merken. Stellantis is bereid om samen met Leapmotor te produceren. Volkswagen overweegt defensieve maatregelen als mogelijke oplossing voor onderbenutting van fabrieken.
