Op papier lijkt dat een duidelijke vertraging na jaren van groei met dubbele cijfers. In werkelijkheid wijst het erop dat de markt niet langer als \u00e9\u00e9n geheel beweegt. Maar Europa en Belgi\u00eb vertellen een ander verhaal<\/p>\n<p>Volgens BMI is het aantal registraties van volledig elektrische en plug-in hybride voertuigen in Europa in mei met 23% gestegen tot ongeveer 415.000 stuks, mede dankzij stimuleringsmaatregelen, hogere benzineprijzen en een ruimere keuze aan modellen.<\/p>\n<h4>China koos voor een andere koers<\/h4>\n<p>China, nog steeds veruit de grootste markt voor elektrische voertuigen ter wereld, ging de andere kant op: het aantal binnenlandse registraties daalde met 9% tot ongeveer 987.000 eenheden na het aflopen van belastingvoordelen en inruilsteun. Noord-Amerika kende een nog scherpere daling, met 26% tot ongeveer 123.000 voertuigen, doordat de beleidssteun in de VS afnam.<\/p>\n<p>Dit maakt 2026 tot een complexer jaar voor elektrische mobiliteit. De wereldwijde transitie keert niet om, maar gaat een tragere en ongelijkmatiger fase in. Het Internationaal Energieagentschap verwacht nog steeds dat er dit jaar 23 miljoen elektrische auto\u2019s zullen worden verkocht, oftewel 28% van alle verkochte nieuwe auto\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>EV Volumes is voorzichtiger en voorspelt 22,7 miljoen, een stijging van slechts 5% ten opzichte van 2025. Beide scenario\u2019s zouden enkele jaren geleden nog als buitengewoon zijn beschouwd. In 2025 bedroeg de wereldwijde verkoop van elektrische auto\u2019s al meer dan 20 miljoen, wat betekent dat ongeveer \u00e9\u00e9n op de vier wereldwijd verkochte nieuwe auto\u2019s elektrisch was.<\/p>\n<h4>De markt vertraagt<\/h4>\n<p>Het contrast met het recente verleden is opvallend. V\u00f3\u00f3r de pandemie waren elektrische auto\u2019s op veel markten nog een nicheproduct. Nu is het debat verschoven van de vraag of elektrische auto\u2019s kunnen groeien naar de vraag of die groei even snel kan blijven als voorheen. Dat verschil is van belang. Een markt kan vertragen en toch elk jaar structureel groter worden.<\/p>\n<p>Europa is hiervan een goed voorbeeld. Het continent kende in 2025 een sterke opleving op het gebied van elektrische voertuigen: volgens het IEA steeg de verkoop van elektrische auto\u2019s toen met meer dan 30% tot 4,2 miljoen, oftewel 28% van de totale verkoop van nieuwe auto\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>In de EU bereikten volledig elektrische auto\u2019s in 2025 een marktaandeel van 17,4%, een stijging ten opzichte van 13,6% in 2024, terwijl benzine- en dieselauto\u2019s verder terrein verloren. Uit de gegevens voor 2026 blijkt dat Europa zijn momentum heeft weten vast te houden, zelfs nu de binnenlandse markt in China afkoelt en Noord-Amerika terrein verliest.<\/p>\n<p>Belgi\u00eb loopt voorop in die Europese trend. In mei daalde het aantal nieuwe autoregistraties in Belgi\u00eb en Luxemburg met 2,1% tot 33.625 voertuigen, deels als gevolg van het lagere aantal werkdagen.<\/p>\n<p>Toch bleven volledig elektrische auto\u2019s terrein winnen en bereikten ze een marktaandeel van 37,4%, bijna twee vijfde van de nieuwe registraties. In de eerste vijf maanden kromp de totale markt met 4,1%, maar de mix van aandrijflijnen bleef verschuiven in de richting van elektrificatie.<\/p>\n<h4>Belgi\u00eb is ingrijpend veranderd<\/h4>\n<p>Het beeld in Belgi\u00eb is in korte tijd ingrijpend veranderd. Uit cijfers van Statbel blijkt dat hybride en elektrische auto\u2019s in 2025 goed waren voor 72,8% van de nieuwe registraties van personenauto\u2019s, tegenover 7,9% in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Diesel, dat ooit dominant was, daalde tot slechts 3,5% van de nieuwe registraties. EV Belgium telde in 2025 ongeveer 145.000 verkochte elektrische auto's in Belgi\u00eb, een stijging van 13,6% ten opzichte van 2024, waardoor elektrische modellen een marktaandeel van 35% behaalden.<\/p>\n<p>Dat betekent niet dat Belgische particuliere kopers plotseling overtuigde liefhebbers van elektrische auto\u2019s zijn geworden. De elektrificatie in het land wordt nog steeds grotendeels aangedreven door bedrijfswagens.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens Statbel en EV Belgium werden bijna 9 op de 10 nieuwe, volledig elektrische auto\u2019s die in 2025 werden geregistreerd, door bedrijven geregistreerd. Voor particuliere consumenten blijven de prijs, de toegang tot oplaadpunten en het vertrouwen in de accu\u2019s grote belemmeringen vormen.<\/p>\n<p>Uit het Belgische consumentenonderzoek van Deloitte voor 2026 bleek dat slechts 12% van de respondenten de voorkeur gaven aan een BEV als hun volgende auto, nauwelijks meer dan in 2025, terwijl 45% nog steeds de voorkeur gaven aan benzine of diesel, en 31% aan hybride auto\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h4>Tweedehands als versneller<\/h4>\n<p>Deze schijnbare tegenstrijdigheid vormt de volgende fase in het Belgische EV-verhaal. De markt voor bedrijfswagens heeft de registraties van nieuwe EV\u2019s versneld. De particuliere markt zou later kunnen volgen, via de tweedehandsmarkt.<\/p>\n<p>Belgi\u00eb is een land waar veel tweedehandsauto\u2019s worden verkocht; in 2025 zullen tweedehandsauto\u2019s 64% van de totale autoverkoop uitmaken. Elektrische auto's vormen nog steeds een klein deel van die markt, met een stijging van 3% naar 5%, maar het aanbod van ex-lease-EV's zal snel groeien naarmate de huidige bedrijfswagens weer op de markt komen.<\/p>\n<p>Als die auto\u2019s tegen aantrekkelijke prijzen op de markt komen, met nog geldende accugaranties en transparante informatie over de accustatus, zouden ze elektrische auto\u2019s binnen het bereik kunnen brengen van huishoudens die geen nieuwe auto kunnen of willen kopen.<\/p>\n<p>Dat zou ook de negatieve beeldvorming rond elektrische auto\u2019s op sociale media kunnen temperen. Vertrouwdheid speelt een belangrijke rol. Zodra buren, familieleden en collega\u2019s tweedehands elektrische auto\u2019s kopen die betrouwbaar zijn en goedkoper in gebruik, wordt de discussie minder ideologisch en meer praktisch.<\/p>\n<p>Voorlopig wijzen de cijfers van mei niet op een ineenstorting van de markt voor elektrische auto\u2019s. Ze wijzen juist op een markt die aan het veranderen is. De wereldwijde groei verloopt trager dan in de hoogconjunctuurjaren, maar het uitgangspunt is veel groter.<\/p>\n<p>Europa blijft vaart maken. Belgi\u00eb kent al een hoge mate van elektrificatie bij nieuwe registraties, hoewel dit grotendeels via wagenparken verloopt.
