Het gaat om een compacte spinner die is ontworpen om tussen de 13 en 130 horsepower te produceren, maar waarvoor zou die dienen? En is het haalbaar of gewoon een eigenzinnig technisch idee?<\/p>\n<h4>Terug naar de jaren zestig<\/h4>\n<p>Als fervent \u2013 en steeds meer ge\u00efsoleerd \u2013 voorstander van waterstof als aandrijving voor personenauto\u2019s moet ik toegeven dat de turbine van Toyota een staaltje van elegant ingenieurswerk is. Het is echter ook een oplossing die al uit de jaren zestig stamt.<\/p>\n<p>In 1963 kon de Turbine Car van Chrysler op tequila rijden, tot 36.000 tpm draaien en zag hij eruit als een kruising tussen een vliegtuig en een auto. Interessant genoeg bouwde het bedrijf er vijftig van. Maar de technologie is nooit van de grond gekomen, omdat turbines \u2013 zodra je ze verkleint voor personenauto\u2019s \u2013 te veel brandstof verbruiken en oncomfortabel veel warmte afgeven.<\/p>\n<p>Een turbine kan op verschillende brandstoffen draaien, maar volgens Toyota verandert waterstof de situatie. Dit is eigenlijk al de derde keer dat Toyota zich met waterstof bezighoudt. Het bedrijf bouwt al sedans met brandstofcellen en past deze ook toe in verbrandingsmotoren. De grootste voorstander van de eerste optie is de Mirai; de<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>De Corolla Cross H2 Concept werd drie jaar geleden gepresenteerd. Toyota zei toen dat het 40% op weg was naar commercialisering, maar drie jaar later blijft de waterstof-verbrandingsmotor nog steeds een curiositeit in de motorsport.<\/p>\n<h4>De omvang is het probleem<\/h4>\n<p>Nu is de turbine aan de beurt. Het octrooi beschrijft een verbrandingskamer voor een gasturbine, de ruimte waar lucht en brandstof samenkomen en verbranden. In een conventionele gasturbine stroomt samengeperste lucht een blikachtige kamer binnen, wordt er brandstof ingespoten, ontsteken de ontstekers en zetten de uitzettende gassen een turbinewiel in beweging. Dat wiel drijft een compressor aan en levert hopelijk genoeg overtollig vermogen op om een aandrijfas of generator te laten draaien.<\/p>\n<p>Het probleem van Toyota is de schaalgrootte. Een scheepsturbine levert duizenden pk. Toyota wil tussen de 13 en 130. Dat is het bereik van een bromfiets tot een motorfiets. Bij die omvang verandert de verbrandingskamer in een thermische chaos. In het octrooi wordt toegegeven dat er een \u201cminder complexe structuur\u201d nodig is, wat in technische termen betekent: \u201cwe proberen te voorkomen dat dit ding uit de hand loopt\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Gelijkmatige verbranding<\/h4>\n<p>Dan is er nog de brandstof. Waterstof is lichter dan benzine of kerosine en verbrandt veel heter. Dat is geweldig voor de vermogensdichtheid. Voor al het andere is het echter rampzalig. In een standaard verbrandingskamer spuit je brandstof in, steek je die aan en hoop je dat het mengsel gelijkmatig ontbrandt. Met waterstof werkt dat niet. De brandstof verspreidt zich anders, en er ontstaan stikstofoxiden in hoeveelheden waar een dieselingenieur van zou blozen.<\/p>\n<p>De oplossing van Toyota bestaat uit een reeks kleine brandstofinjectoren die over de verbrandingskamer zijn verdeeld. Elke injector wordt via twee afzonderlijke kanalen van perslucht en waterstof voorzien. De twee stromen komen in de spuitmond samen, mengen zich grondig, waarna een in de injector ingebouwde ontsteker de mengeling ontsteekt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Het resultaat is niet \u00e9\u00e9n grote vlam, maar vele kleinere, verspreide vlammen. Die gelijkmatigheid is belangrijk omdat zo wordt voorkomen dat er plekken ontstaan waar te veel waterstof in aanraking komt met te weinig lucht. Het betekent ook dat de vlammen de hoeken van de verbrandingskamer bereiken die bij een enkele centrale injector koud zouden blijven. Dat zou leiden tot vermogensverlies en een lagere effici\u00ebntie.<\/p>\n<h4>Warmteverliezen<\/h4>\n<p>Gasturbines zijn thermodynamisch effici\u00ebnt op grote schaal en bij hoge temperaturen. Als je ze verkleint, gaan ze achteruit. Warmteverliezen nemen een groter percentage van de totale energie in beslag. De rotatie-inertie die een turbine in vliegtuigen soepel laat draaien, wordt een nachtmerrie in stop-and-go-verkeer. Chrysler bewees dit in 1963. De uitlaatgastemperatuur van zijn turbineauto bij stationair draaien was zo hoog dat de bumper van de auto erachter zou kunnen smelten.<\/p>\n<p>Waterstof lost dat niet op. Het verandert weliswaar de chemische processen in de verbrandingskamer, maar het turbinewiel moet nog steeds werk onttrekken aan heet gas. De aanpak met meerdere injectoren is technisch gezien echt interessant. Maar de turbine zelf is een oplossing voor een probleem dat batterijen al hebben opgelost met minder onderdelen. En zonder exotische brandstof, binnen het bestaande elektriciteitsnet.<\/p>\n<p>Het is moeilijk voor te stellen hoe dit in de praktijk zou kunnen worden gebracht. Afgezien van een generatorfunctie in een EREV-opstelling lijkt de turbine niet het meest geschikte onderdeel om een doorbraak van waterstof in de personenautomobiliteit te bewerkstelligen.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toyota filed a patent last month for a hydrogen-powered gas turbine combustor.
