Maar misschien is de oplossing wel veel eenvoudiger. Onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Cambridge oefenden druk uit en zagen de levensduur van de cellen aanzienlijk toenemen.<\/p>\n<p>Betere prestaties onder druk? Het lijkt erop dat ook batterijen hiervan profiteren. De bevindingen zijn gepubliceerd in een nieuw onderzoek in Nature Energy. De wetenschappers ontdekten dat wanneer een lithium-ion-pouchcel onder constante, zorgvuldig gekalibreerde fysieke druk wordt gehouden, de levensduur ervan kan verdubbelen. Dat is natuurlijk een enorme verbetering.<\/p>\n<h4>Pneumatische balgen<\/h4>\n<p>Professor Michael De Volder, een werktuigbouwkundig ingenieur aan de Universiteit van Cambridge die het onderzoek mede leidde, verwoordde het zonder omwegen. \u201cWe hebben gewoon in de handel verkrijgbare batterijen gekocht en de levensduur ervan onder verschillende drukken getest,\u201d zei hij in het offici\u00eble persbericht. \u201cWe hoefden niets te veranderen aan de samenstelling van hun elektrolyt of elektroden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maar hoe is het mogelijk dat de levensduur van de batterij verdubbelt zonder de chemische samenstelling te veranderen? Het antwoord ligt in een reeks pneumatische balgen. Dit zijn in feite kleine, met lucht gevulde kussentjes die fungeren als zelfregulerende klemmen.<\/p>\n<p>De onderzoekers bouwden een speciaal apparaat om een constante druk op een zakcel te handhaven, terwijl sensoren kleine volumeveranderingen registreerden tijdens laad- en ontlaadcycli.<\/p>\n<p>Wanneer lithiumionen zich tussen de anode en de kathode verplaatsen, zet de cel fysiek uit en krimpt hij weer in. \u201cBijna alsof hij ademt\u201d, zoals De Volder het omschrijft. En zoals hij opmerkt, zijn batterijen \u201cniet zo dol op deze cyclus van spanning en ontspanning\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Het team ontdekte dat het magische getal ongeveer 12,5 bar is. Dat is zo\u2019n vier keer de gebruikelijke druk, en eerlijk gezegd is het keihard en meedogenloos.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens het rapport is het ook heel belangrijk om binnen dat smalle bereik te blijven, anders wordt de situatie erger in plaats van beter. Te hoge druk leidt tot lithiumafzetting op de anode. Te lage druk zorgt ervoor dat de kathode barst. Het komt aan op een constante druk.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cUit onze experimenten is gebleken wat voor batterijen de \u2018ideale toestand\u2019 is als het om druk gaat,\u201d aldus De Volder.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Minder slijtage, meer vertrouwen in elektrische auto\u2019s<\/h4>\n<p>Een verdubbeling van de levensduur is ronduit spectaculair. Bij conventionele aanpassingen aan het materiaal worden doorgaans verbeteringen van vijf tot tien procent behaald. De voordelen zouden ook aanzienlijk kunnen zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Dit zou de onder druk staande tweedehandsprijzen van elektrische auto\u2019s doen stijgen en de toevoer van batterijcellen naar de recyclingmarkt vertragen, die moeite heeft om volledige circulaire economie te realiseren.<\/p>\n<p>Dat is ook wat De Volder benadrukt. Elektrische auto\u2019s zorgen ervoor dat de lokale uitlaatgasemissies worden teruggedrongen, maar \u201cwe moeten ervoor zorgen dat we daardoor geen nieuwe ecologische rampen in andere delen van de wereld veroorzaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Het is onvermijdelijk dat er geen baanbrekende uitvinding bestaat zonder addertje onder het gras. Het werk is tot nu toe alleen op laboratoriumschaal gedemonstreerd. Cambridge Enterprise heeft een octrooi aangevraagd, maar het opschalen van pneumatische klemmen van een enkele pouch-cel naar een volledig accupakket voor auto\u2019s is een heel andere technische uitdaging.<\/p>\n<h4>Ondertussen in Azi\u00eb<\/h4>\n<p>Cambridge is niet de enige die probeert de levensduur van batterijen te verlengen zonder van chemische samenstelling te veranderen. Het Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) meldde eerder dit jaar dat een structurele herontwerp van vaste-stofelektrolyten de geleidbaarheid twee tot vier keer kan verhogen, terwijl er goedkopere grondstoffen worden gebruikt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ondertussen werken onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Zhengzhou aan zelfherstellende batterijen die gebruikmaken van dynamische polymeren en vloeibare metalen om scheurtjes in de elektroden zelfstandig te herstellen; een concept dat de slijtage als gevolg van herhaaldelijke uitzetting en krimp zou kunnen tegengaan.<\/p>\n<p>Geen van deze technologie\u00ebn draagt nog het logo van een autofabrikant, maar samen wijzen ze erop dat de grootste successen op korte termijn wellicht voortkomen uit de natuurkunde en de mechanica, en niet uit een nieuw element in de kathode.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you want to boost battery life, it seems only logical to look to the periodic table for a breakthrough.
