Typische koudwatersoorten, zoals de bruine garnaal, grondels en haring\/sprot, komen nu veel minder voor, terwijl warmwatersoorten (zoals de giftige kleine wobber) en kamkwallen het uitstekend doen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Dit blijkt uit onderzoek dat is uitgevoerd door bioloog Ward Stellamans (KU Leuven) in samenwerking met het Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee (VLIZ).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Stekende wobbervis<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Vroeger waren er in de ondiepe kustwateren volop bruine garnalen te vinden; tegenwoordig wemelt het er van de kleine pijlstaartvissen, exotische soorten en kwallen. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Wie vandaag in het ondiepe water langs onze kust waadt, doet er goed aan voorzichtig te zijn, aangezien de giftige kleine pijlstaartvis veel vaker in de kustwateren voorkomt dan 30 jaar geleden. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Volgens Stellamans is de fauna op het strand drastisch veranderd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Met andere woorden: de ondiepe surfzone van Belgi\u00eb, de zogenaamde \u201ckweekplaats van de zee\u201d tussen de waterlijn en water dat ongeveer heupdiep is, verandert sneller en zichtbaarder dan de open zee.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">\u201cVerschillende soorten gebruiken deze zone om te groeien,\u201d legt Jan Seys van het VLIZ uit aan HLN en VTM. \u201cMaar juist daar staat het ecosysteem onder druk door toerisme, kustontwikkeling en klimaatverandering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Vergelijking<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Elf jaar lang heeft het onderzoeksteam gegevens verzameld langs de kust. Vier keer per jaar sleepten vrijwilligers sleepnetten door het ondiepe water om te zien welke organismen ze zouden aantreffen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Hun bevindingen werden vergeleken met historische gegevens uit 1996 en 1997, verzameld door onderzoekster Bregje Beyst (Universiteit Gent). De resultaten waren spectaculair, aldus Jan Seys van het VLIZ.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Verarmde zee<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Vooral koudwatervissoorten krijgen het zwaar te verduren.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Zo is de populatie grijze garnalen met minstens 78 procent afgenomen. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">De vangsten van zeebaars en schol blijven voorlopig stabiel, terwijl bij andere soorten een opvallende stijging te zien is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">De kleine steekvis komt tegenwoordig zelfs 24 keer vaker voor dan eind jaren negentig. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Daarnaast zijn er ook twee nieuwe soorten opgedoken: de Amerikaanse kamkwallen en de Atlantische grijze zwemkrab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">De conclusie is dat de zee armer en warmer is geworden en dat er nu veel meer kamkwallen in voorkomen dan vroeger. Deze zijn niet gevaarlijk voor mensen, maar ze eten enorme hoeveelheden plankton, wat kan leiden tot een minder productieve zee.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Warmer zeewater<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Ook de temperatuur van het strandwater baart zorgen. Onlangs werd een temperatuur van 23,4 graden gemeten, wat buitengewoon warm is. \u201c<\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">\u201dSoorten die hier verdwijnen, trekken mogelijk naar diepere, koelere wateren.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In een eerdere samenvatting van LifeWatch\/VLIZ werd al opgemerkt dat de Noordzee in de afgelopen halve eeuw met ongeveer +1,7 \u00b0C is opgewarmd, wat ruwweg twee keer zo veel is als het wereldwijde gemiddelde voor oceanen en zee\u00ebn.<\/p>\n<p>Het Europees Milieuagentschap (EEA) plaatst de Belgische bevinding in een breder Europees kader: in de Noordzee en de Keltische Zee\u00ebn is het aandeel van vissoorten die de voorkeur geven aan warme wateren gestegen tot 64% van de totale soortensamenstelling, waarmee ze sinds het einde van de jaren tachtig de soorten die de voorkeur geven aan koud water hebben ingehaald, wat een positieve correlatie vertoont met de temperatuur van het zeeoppervlak.<\/p>\n<h4>De kalender van Sea<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Wetenschappers hebben ook vastgesteld dat de \u2018zeekalender\u2019 is verschoven: sommige soorten verschijnen eerder of later dan vroeger, wat gevolgen heeft voor het kwetsbare evenwicht van het ecosysteem. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Volgens de onderzoekers is verdere monitoring van cruciaal belang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Klimaatverandering lijkt een belangrijke oorzaak te zijn van de opwarming van het zeewater en veranderingen in de fauna, maar het is niet de enige factor. Ook andere aspecten, zoals visserijdruk, veranderingen in het aantal roofdieren, bijvangst, strandopspuiting, baggerwerkzaamheden, haveninfrastructuur, nutri\u00ebnten, verschuivingen in het plankton, toeristische druk en invasieve soorten, spelen een rol.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Biodiversity in Belgian coastal waters has changed fundamentally over the past few decades due to global warming.
