Volgens de onderzoekers zou het materiaal in de toekomst kunnen dienen als anodemateriaal voor lithium-ionbatterijen, waardoor tegelijkertijd plastic afval wordt gerecycled en aan de vraag naar grafiet voor batterijen wordt voldaan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Een onderzoeksteam van de Pennsylvania State University heeft een proces ontwikkeld om polyethyleentereftalaat (PET) om te zetten in synthetisch grafiet; dit proces is nu gepubliceerd in het tijdschrift \u2018Diamond and Related Materials\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De wetenschappers hebben PET omgezet in grafiet met behulp van kleine hoeveelheden grafeenoxide en een gecontroleerd thermisch proces. Volgens het onderzoek vertoonde het resulterende materiaal een meer geordende kristalstructuur dan die van in de handel verkrijgbaar natuurlijk grafiet, een essentieel kenmerk voor gebruik als anodemateriaal in lithium-ionbatterijen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grafiet is een van de meest essenti\u00eble grondstoffen voor lithium-ionbatterijen en dient als anodemateriaal dat elektrische lading opslaat en weer afgeeft. Door de stijgende vraag naar elektrische voertuigen, stationaire energieopslagsystemen en consumentenelektronica neemt ook de behoefte aan grafiet van batterijkwaliteit toe. PET is ondertussen een van de meest gebruikte kunststoffen ter wereld, waarvan een groot deel, ondanks bestaande recyclingsystemen, nog steeds niet wordt teruggewonnen.<\/p>\n<h4>Optimaal grafiet<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor hun proces hebben de onderzoekers PET-plastic versnipperd en dit gemengd met grafeenoxide. Het optimale grafiet had een grafeenoxidegehalte van 2,5%. Volgens het team bevordert dit de vorming van geordende grafietkristallen en is er, in tegenstelling tot bij conventionele methoden, geen behoefte aan metaalkatalysatoren zoals ijzer, nikkel of kobalt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hierdoor vervallen ook de extra zuiveringsstappen die nodig zijn om metaalresten te verwijderen. \u201cDe meeste mensen beschouwen een plastic fles als afval zodra ze deze niet meer gebruiken. Ons onderzoek toont aan dat hetzelfde materiaal een waardevolle grondstof kan worden voor de productie van grafiet, dat essentieel is voor moderne batterijtechnologie\u00ebn\u201d, legt hoofdauteur Shakshi Sekar uit. Door het gebruik van metaalkatalysatoren te vermijden, vermindert het proces ook het gebruik van chemicali\u00ebn, waardoor schoner grafiet kan worden geproduceerd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAls afvalplastic een grondstof kan worden voor geavanceerde energiematerialen, verandert dat onze kijk op recycling,\u201d voegde Sekar eraan toe. \u201cIn plaats van plastic te zien als een afvalprobleem, kunnen we het beschouwen als een hulpbron die schone energietechnologie\u00ebn ondersteunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Vroege fase<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het onderzoek bevindt zich echter nog in een vroeg stadium. De wetenschappers willen nu onderzoeken hoe het proces kan worden opgeschaald voor industri\u00eble toepassingen en hoe het materiaal presteert in batterijcellen. Als dit lukt, zou PET-afval in de toekomst kunnen worden gerecycled en hergebruikt als grondstof voor batterijonderdelen.<\/p>\n<p>Hoewel er nog meer onderzoek nodig is om de grootschalige productie en de prestaties van de batterijen te beoordelen, toont de studie een veelbelovende manier aan om een van \u2019s werelds meest voorkomende afvalstromen om te zetten in een hoogwaardig materiaal voor energieopslag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deze ontwikkeling sluit aan bij het bredere streven naar alternatieve grondstofbronnen voor de productie van batterijen.
