Deskundigen wijzen op een combinatie van factoren: geografische omstandigheden, het stedelijk hitte-eilandeffect, sociaaleconomische kwetsbaarheid, de kwaliteit van de huisvesting en mogelijk luchtvervuiling.<\/p>\n<p>Want hoe je het ook bekijkt: armoede wordt al lang in verband gebracht met een slechtere gezondheid, en juist deze kwetsbare groepen worden het hardst getroffen door hitte: hitte belast het hart, en verhoogde ozonconcentraties hebben een negatieve invloed op de luchtwegen.<\/p>\n<h4>Regionale spreiding van stakingen<\/h4>\n<p>Tussen 18 juni en 1 juli zijn er in Belgi\u00eb 1.747 mensen meer overleden dan het gemiddelde van de afgelopen vijf jaar. Volgens het Wetenschappelijk Instituut en het federale onderzoekscentrum Sciensano zijn dit de hoogste sterftecijfers die tijdens een hittegolf zijn geregistreerd sinds het begin van de analyses in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>De regionale spreiding is opvallend. Wat de oversterfte betreft, bedroeg het cijfer 31% in Vlaanderen, 61% in Brussel en maar liefst 76% in Walloni\u00eb.<\/p>\n<p>Op basis van de momenteel beschikbare gegevens is het moeilijk om de precieze oorzaken van deze toegenomen sterfte aan te wijzen, aldus Sciensano, maar er tekent zich niettemin een combinatie van factoren af.<\/p>\n<h4>Hitte-eilandeffect<\/h4>\n<p>Het epicentrum van de hittegolf lag in Frankrijk, waar de warmste juni maand ooit werd gemeten \u2013 3,8\u00b0 boven het gemiddelde. Walloni\u00eb ligt dichter bij dat epicentrum, en daarom werden daar ook hogere ozonconcentraties gemeten.<\/p>\n<p>In de omgeving van Luik doet zich nog een lokaal effect voor: de rotsachtige bodem neemt meer warmte op en in de valleien waait er minder wind, waardoor zowel de hitte als de luchtvervuiling langer blijven hangen.<\/p>\n<p>Brussel is bovendien bijzonder kwetsbaar voor hitte als gevolg van het stedelijk hitte-eilandeffect. Verharde oppervlakken zoals asfalt en beton, evenals gebouwen, nemen overdag warmte op en geven die \u2019s nachts weer af. In dichtbebouwde wijken wordt dit effect versterkt door het zogenaamde canyon-effect: gebouwen langs smalle straten houden de warmte langer vast, beperken de luchtcirculatie en zorgen ervoor dat de stad \u2019s nachts niet voldoende kan afkoelen. Daardoor kunnen wijken met weinig groen en weinig bomen enkele graden warmer worden dan hun omgeving.<\/p>\n<p>Tijdens de hittegolf werd deze situatie nog verergerd door de aanhoudende hittekoepel, waardoor de nachttemperaturen uitzonderlijk hoog bleven. Daardoor konden woningen nauwelijks afkoelen en bleven de temperaturen in veel appartementen zelfs \u2019s nachts rond de 35\u00b0 hangen. Slecht ge\u00efsoleerde en oudere appartementen in dichtbebouwde wijken zijn hierdoor bijzonder kwetsbaar.<\/p>\n<p>Bovendien: huurders met een laag inkomen hebben zelden geld voor isolatie, raambekleding of airconditioning \u2013 en zijn zelden eigenaar van hun woning, waardoor ze geen aanspraak kunnen maken op renovatiesubsidies.<\/p>\n<p>Bovendien wordt armoede al lang in verband gebracht met een slechtere gezondheid, en juist deze kwetsbare groepen worden het hardst getroffen door hitte: hitte belast het hart, en verhoogde ozonconcentraties hebben een negatieve invloed op de luchtwegen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_189534\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-189534\" style=\"width: 2048px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-189534 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/brussel-mobiliteit.png?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/brussel-mobiliteit.png?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/brussel-mobiliteit.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/brussel-mobiliteit.png?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-189534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Een klassiek voorbeeld van wat je niet moet doen om het stedelijk hitte-eilandeffect tegen te gaan: het gerenoveerde Schumanplein, dat momenteel geen overkapping of groen heeft \/ Brussel Mobiliteit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Effect van de LEZ in Brussel<\/h4>\n<p>Specifiek voor Brussel is er mogelijk nog een factor die het beeld compleet maakt. De luchtkwaliteit daar is de afgelopen tien jaar gestaag verbeterd. Dankzij de invoering van de Lage-Emissiezone (LEZ) en de vernieuwing van het wagenpark zijn de NO\u2082-concentraties op drukke verkeersaders zoals Art-Law\/Kunst-Wet met maar liefst 46% gedaald. Tegen 2024 voldeden alle offici\u00eble meetstations aan de Europese normen.<\/p>\n<p>Maar volgens de stadsbelangenorganisatie BRAL is die vooruitgang <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/03\/13\/report-brussels-air-quality-stagnates-due-to-lez-postponement\/\">is vastgelopen<\/a> in de afgelopen twee jaar. Uit de metingen van BRAL op 24 extra meetpunten blijkt dat de NO\u2082-concentratie tussen juni 2024 en juni 2025 niet verder is gedaald en zelfs licht is gestegen van 32,4 naar 33,2 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 \u2013 ruim boven de WHO-drempelwaarde van 10 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 en de toekomstige Europese norm van 20 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 die in 2030 van kracht wordt.<\/p>\n<p>BRAL schrijft dit toe aan het uitstel van de volgende LEZ-fase, die het Brussels Parlement in oktober 2024 met twee jaar heeft uitgesteld. Deze verklaring wordt ondersteund door het Grondwettelijk Hof, dat dat uitstel in december 2025 definitief ongedaan maakte en oordeelde dat het eerdere tijdschema \u2013 tussen 2018 en 2023 \u2013 in feite wel degelijk resultaten had opgeleverd.<\/p>\n<h4>Minder autogebruik in de stad<\/h4>\n<p>Eerder dit jaar heeft BRAL een openbare enqu\u00eate gehouden in vier Brusselse wijken met hoge luchtvervuiling: \u00c9tangs Noirs\/Zwarte Vijvers, Porte de Flandre\/Vlaamsepoort, Toison D\u2019Or\/Guldenvlies en de campus van de ULB-VUB. Volgens de onlangs gepubliceerde resultaten maakten meer dan 80% van de 830 ondervraagde bewoners zich zorgen over de luchtkwaliteit, waarbij hun eigen gezondheid en die van hun kinderen hun grootste zorg was.<\/p>\n<p>Dat is logisch: het gaat hier om dichtbebouwde wijken met weinig groen, veel verharde oppervlakken en drukke verkeersaders met een slechte luchtcirculatie, wat leidt tot zowel hogere NO\u2082-concentraties als een sterker hitte-eilandeffect.<\/p>\n<p>Maar liefst 67% van de respondenten geeft aan onvoldoende of helemaal niet op de hoogte te zijn van de luchtkwaliteit en de gevolgen daarvan. Volgens de respondenten moet het Brussels Gewest meer doen (43,5%). Tot de belangrijkste maatregelen behoren het terugdringen van het autogebruik (53%) en het strenger aanpakken van industri\u00eble vervuiling (32%).<\/p>\n<p>BRAL wijst erop dat fijnstof (PM10 en kleinere deeltjes) en stikstofdioxide de twee belangrijkste luchtverontreinigende stoffen in Brussel zijn. Deze stoffen hebben schadelijke gevolgen voor de gezondheid, waaronder ontstekingsreacties, het ontstaan van chronische en hart- en vaatziekten, en een verhoogd risico op een beroerte. Deze verontreinigende stoffen zijn voornamelijk afkomstig van het wegverkeer \u2013 met name dieselmotoren \u2013 en van verwarmingssystemen in gebouwen.<\/p>\n<p>Hoe je het ook bekijkt: hitte, luchtvervuiling en armoede in Brussel vertonen opvallend vergelijkbare patronen, en dat maakt de meest kwetsbare inwoners dubbel zo kwetsbaar.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The June heat wave led to a notably higher excess mortality rate in Wallonia and Brussels than in Flanders.
