{"id":190071,"date":"2026-07-23T08:05:23","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T06:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/?p=190071"},"modified":"2026-07-23T11:35:33","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T09:35:33","slug":"indian-startup-claims-rare-earth-free-electric-motor-breakthrough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/07\/23\/indian-startup-claims-rare-earth-free-electric-motor-breakthrough\/","title":{"rendered":"Indiase start-up claimt doorbraak op het gebied van elektromotoren zonder zeldzame aardmetalen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Een start-up uit Bengaluru, India, genaamd Vimag Labs, heeft zojuist zijn vijfde Indiase octrooi verkregen voor een elektromotor die zonder zeldzame-aardemagneten werkt en in plaats daarvan gebruikmaakt van software en vermogenselektronica om zijn magnetisch veld op te wekken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het is een klein bedrijf met een omzet van $5 miljoen dat een poging waagt om een probleem op te lossen waar Tesla, GM en alle grote autofabrikanten al jaren mee worstelen: hoe bouw je een concurrerende elektromotor die niet afhankelijk is van China, zo meldt het vakblad Electrek.<\/p>\n<h4>Virtuele magneten<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bijna elke elektrische auto op de weg maakt gebruik van een synchrone motor met permanente magneten (PMSM), die voor het opwekken van koppel gebruikmaakt van vaste zeldzame-aardemagneten die in de rotor zijn ingebouwd. De Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) van Vimag maakt volledig af van die magneten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In plaats daarvan wekt het systeem het magnetisch veld van de rotor in realtime op en regelt het dit met behulp van vermogenselektronica en eigen regelalgoritmen, terwijl het ontwerp borstelloos en zonder sleepringen blijft. Het octrooi, getiteld \u201cA Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control\u201d, heeft betrekking op de kernarchitectuur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het bedrijf stelt dat het platform de prestaties van permanente magneten evenaart of overtreft, zonder dat er magneten aan te pas komen. Dat is de bewering; deze is nog niet onafhankelijk geverifieerd op productieschaal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDit octrooi is het resultaat van meer dan 87.600 engineeringuren,\u201d aldus Manish Seth, medeoprichter en CEO van Vimag Labs, die het bedrijf in september 2025 oprichtte. Met dit octrooi komt het totaal aantal toegekende octrooien van Vimag op vijf, terwijl er nog tien octrooien en vijftien handelsmerken in de pijplijn zitten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vimag laat weten dat het proefprojecten uitvoert met fabrikanten van tweewielers en personenauto\u2019s, en dat het onlangs een Serie A-financieringsronde van $5 miljoen heeft opgehaald onder leiding van Accel, waaraan ook Chakra Growth Fund en Thinkuvate hebben deelgenomen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het bedrijf heeft ook een memorandum van overeenstemming (MoU) voor productie gesloten met Jendamark om de opschaling te ondersteunen, en richt zich op industri\u00eble systemen van 200 kW tot 600 kW, evenals op robotica, defensie en koeltoepassingen. Grote plannen, zo te zien.<\/p>\n<h4>Beheer van de toeleveringsketen<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De cijfers uit de toeleveringsketen maken duidelijk waarom een dergelijke motor van belang is. Volgens het Internationaal Energieagentschap (IEA) was China in 2024 goed voor ongeveer 91% van de wereldwijde raffinage en scheiding van zeldzame aardmetalen en voor 94% van de productie van gesinterde permanente magneten, precies de magneten die in EV-motoren worden gebruikt. China bezit slechts ongeveer een derde van de wereldwijde reserves, dus zijn invloed is te danken aan de verwerking, niet aan de grondstoffen zelf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peking heeft die invloed ingezet. In april 2025 legde China exportbeperkingen op voor zeven zware zeldzame-aardmetalen en daarmee samenhangende magneten, en deze beperkingen dwongen Amerikaanse en Europese autofabrikanten hun productie terug te schroeven terwijl de vergunningen werden geregeld. In oktober 2025 ging China nog een stap verder met een \u201c0,1%\u201d-de-minimisregel die gericht was op alle in het buitenland vervaardigde producten die Chinese zeldzame aardmetalen bevatten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China heeft die uitbreiding van oktober op 7 november 2025 voor een jaar opgeschort, als onderdeel van een bredere handelswapenstilstand. De beperkingen zijn tijdelijk opgeschort, maar niet opgeheven, en dat is precies de reden waarom autofabrikanten niet vertragen in hun zoektocht naar alternatieven.<\/p>\n<h4>Niet alleen<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vimag is natuurlijk niet de enige die op zoek is naar \u2018de heilige graal\u2019. Het is slechts \u00e9\u00e9n van de vele pogingen, en de gevestigde spelers beschikken over meer financi\u00eble middelen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla verklaarde tijdens zijn Investor Day 2023 dat de motor van de volgende generatie geen zeldzame aardmetalen zou bevatten, maar heeft nog steeds geen productiedatum bevestigd. GM en Stellantis steunen Niron Magnetics, de start-up uit Minnesota die \u2018Clean Earth\u2019-magneten van ijzer-nitride produceert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De magneetloze \u2018iBEE\u2019-motor van Valeo zal pas in 2028 op de markt komen. Honda heeft Enedym, een ontwikkelaar van switched-reluctance-motoren, financieel gesteund. En Jaguar Land Rover heeft als risicobeperkende maatregel ge\u00efnvesteerd in de recycling van zeldzame-aardemagneten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De rode draad: iedereen geeft geld uit, en nog niemand produceert op grote schaal aandrijfeenheden zonder zeldzame aardmetalen. Dat is de opening waar Vimag gebruik van probeert te maken.<\/p>\n<h4>Nog in de proeffase<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Er waren veel reacties op dit artikel van Electrek; \u00e9\u00e9n reactie trok in het bijzonder onze aandacht: \u201cDe technologische koers die hier wordt gevolgd is legitiem, en het octrooi en de financiering zijn re\u00ebel,\u201d aldus \u2018Stetrain\u2019. \u201cHet weglaten van de rotormagneet door middel van een extern bekrachtigd, softwaregedefinieerd veld is een totaal andere aanpak dan de ijzer-nitride- en ferrietbenaderingen die de meeste westerse spelers nastreven. Als het op grote schaal werkt, omzeilt het de toeleveringsketen voor zeldzame aardmetalen in plaats van deze opnieuw op te bouwen, maar dat is een grote \u201dals\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vimag is een bedrijf in de proeffase met een motor die alleen in het laboratorium en in een testvloot wordt gebruikt, en geen productiemotor. \u201cMotoren die in een proefproject goed presteren, doorstaan niet altijd de tests op kosten, duurzaamheid en effici\u00ebntie bij massaproductie,\u201d voegt Stetrain toe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDe bewering dat de prestaties \u201cdie van permanente magneten evenaren of overtreffen\u201d moet met de nodige voorzichtigheid worden benaderd totdat er onafhankelijke testgegevens beschikbaar zijn. Het is vooral op het gebied van rendement \u2013 en niet alleen op het gebied van piekvermogen \u2013 dat ontwerpen zonder magneten doorgaans terrein inboeten, en dat heeft directe gevolgen voor de actieradius van elektrische voertuigen. Opvallend is dat de schaarste aan zeldzame aardmetalen ervoor heeft gezorgd dat deze hele categorie de moeite waard is om in de gaten te houden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>En Stetrain voegde daar nog aan toe: \u201cHet is eenvoudig om motoren zonder zeldzame aardmetalen te maken. Veel elektrische auto\u2019s maken er gebruik van; dat heet een wisselstroom-inductiemotor.
