De grote rotonde op het Meiserplein in Brussel, die momenteel wordt beschouwd als een knelpunt in de mobiliteit van de hoofdstad, zal worden heringericht door twee afzonderlijke kruispunten te cre\u00ebren \/Brussels Mobility<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nOok de diagonale oversteekplaats op het plein die door de tramlijn wordt gevormd, zal worden verwijderd, waardoor het beheer van de haltes wordt vereenvoudigd. Het plein zal uitgroeien tot een echt multimodaal knooppunt, dat aansluit op het NMBS\/SNCB-station Meiser, met bredere en veiligere voetgangers- en fietsstroken, evenals meer groen en bomen.<\/p>\n
Moeilijke financi\u00eble situatie<\/h4>\n
De specificaties voor het huidige renovatieproject worden binnenkort gepubliceerd, dus veel technische details zijn nog niet bekendgemaakt, maar het is nu al duidelijk dat het plan voor een tunnel die specifiek bestemd was voor tram 7 \u2013 oftewel de Big Ring Tram \u2013 inclusief een ondergronds tramstation, is opgeschort.<\/p>\n
Eerdere plannen voor tunnels op een diepte van drie verdiepingen, bestemd voor zowel trams als auto\u2019s, zijn eveneens geschrapt vanwege de enorme kosten en de bouwtijd van meer dan 15 jaar.<\/p>\n
Zo\u2019n ondergrondse tramtunnel zou het tramverkeer op het Meiserplein aanzienlijk versnellen, maar voorlopig zal deze niet worden aangelegd. \u201cVolgens de laatste ramingen zal de aanleg van een tramtunnel onder het Meiserplein bijna 200 miljoen euro kosten\u201d, aldus het kabinet van de Brusselse minister van Mobiliteit Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) in La Derni\u00e8re Heure, verwijzend naar de huidige financi\u00eble moeilijkheden waarmee het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest te kampen heeft.<\/p>\n
Dat wil niet zeggen dat de plannen voor een tramtunnel definitief van de baan zijn. \u201cHet huidige herontwikkelingsproject laat de mogelijkheid open om in de toekomst een tunnel aan te leggen, wat serieus in overweging moet worden genomen zodra de regionale financi\u00ebn dat weer toelaten,\u201d benadrukt Elke Van den Brandt.<\/p>\n
\u2018Voordelige\u2019 oplossing<\/h4>\n
De \u2018goedkope\u2019 oplossing die momenteel wordt uitgevoerd, met een geraamde kostprijs van 6 miljoen euro, houdt in dat de trams op straatniveau een duidelijk afgescheiden eigen spoor krijgen om conflicten met het autoverkeer te verminderen.<\/p>\n
Sommige mobiliteitsexperts wijzen er zelfs op dat een tunnel op \u00e9\u00e9n kruispunt weliswaar de tramdienst lokaal kan versnellen, maar het probleem elders in het netwerk niet oplost, en dat goed ontworpen verkeerslichten en speciale tramstroken vaak een aanzienlijk deel van de voordelen kunnen opleveren tegen een fractie van de kosten.<\/p>\n
Anderzijds rijdt een tram die geen hinder ondervindt van het autoverkeer, voetgangers of fietsers sneller en heeft hij minder vertragingen. Een ondergrondse tram kan daarentegen gemakkelijker een hogere dienstfrequentie aan, wat belangrijk is als het openbaar vervoer in dat gebied moet groeien.<\/p>\n
Future Mediatram<\/h4>\n
En misschien ligt daar wel de kern van het probleem. Het nabijgelegen Mediapark-plan beoogt de herontwikkeling van het Reyers-terrein, met 20.000 m\u00b2 aan media-gerelateerde activiteiten, zo\u2019n 1.400 woningen, winkelruimtes en maatschappelijke voorzieningen, allemaal gecentreerd rond een nieuw park van bijna 10 hectare.<\/p>\n
Er zijn ook plannen voor een \u2018Mediatram\u2019, een uitbreiding\/aftakking van tramlijn 25, en het trac\u00e9 dat het Noordstation via Meiser met de Cora-winkel in Woluwe zou verbinden, was al goedgekeurd door de vorige Brusselse regering.<\/p>\n
Maar dat tramproject \u2013 voor alle duidelijkheid: in de huidige verbouwingsplannen is al rekening gehouden met de Mediatram-zijlijn \u2013 is nu ook door de nieuwe regering op een laag pitje gezet tot de volgende ambtstermijn\u2026<\/p>\n
Hoe dan ook, met projecten zoals metrolijn 3, die pas over jaren voltooid zal zijn, en Meiserplein, waarmee op zijn vroegst pas in 2027 een begin zal worden gemaakt, zal het gevoel dat Brussel, inclusief de Ring, \u00e9\u00e9n grote wegwerkplaats is, waarschijnlijk nog geruime tijd blijven bestaan.<\/p>\n
Hopelijk leidt het principe van \u2018nu een beetje ongemak\u2019 tot een voordeel in de vorm van \u2018later minder chaos\u2019. Dat is echter een schrale troost als bijvoorbeeld het Meiserplein rond 2037 opnieuw zou worden herontwikkeld.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
