Slechts twee maanden nadat VinFast Europese journalisten had uitgenodigd om zijn ge\u00efntegreerde industri\u00eble imperium in Vietnam te verkennen \u2013 met een assortiment van elektrische auto\u2019s, bussen en scooters \u2013 is een ander onderdeel van dat ecosysteem in Europa geland.<\/p>\n

Green SM, het bedrijf voor elektrische taxi\u2019s dat onder leiding staat van VinFast-oprichter Ph\u1ea1m Nh\u1eadt V\u01b0\u1ee3ng, is op 30 juli in Kopenhagen van start gegaan met de modellen VinFast VF 6 en VF 8.<\/p>\n

In juni werden in Denemarken ongeveer 590 auto\u2019s geregistreerd, wat wijst op een startvloot van zo\u2019n 600 voertuigen. Het echte verschil is niet alleen dat ze elektrisch zijn.<\/p>\n

Green SM is eigenaar van de auto\u2019s, beheert deze en houdt toezicht op de werkzaamheden van de chauffeurs, in plaats van alleen maar passagiers via een app aan zelfstandige chauffeurs te koppelen.<\/p>\n

Een ander model dan Uber<\/h4>\n

Dat onderscheidt Green SM van Uber, Bolt en Freenow. Die bedrijven zijn voornamelijk technologieplatforms. Chauffeurs of lokale wagenparkpartners zorgen doorgaans voor de auto\u2019s en dragen een groot deel van het investeringsrisico. Dankzij deze \u2018asset-light\u2019-structuur kunnen de platforms snel opschalen zonder duizenden voertuigen aan te schaffen.<\/p>\n

Green SM doet het tegenovergestelde. Het bedrijf heeft de leiding over de auto\u2019s, de merkpositionering, het onderhoud, het opladen, de bestuurdersopleiding en de klantervaring. Dat zou de kwaliteit van de dienstverlening consistenter moeten maken en garanderen dat elke rit elektrisch is.<\/p>\n

Uber schakelt in hoog tempo over op elektrisch rijden, maar in het eerste kwartaal van 2026 waren voertuigen zonder uitstoot nog steeds slechts goed voor 17,9% van het totale aantal afgelegde kilometers in Europa, hoewel Amsterdam en Londen de grens van 40% overschreden.<\/p>\n

Deze aanpak is niet helemaal uniek. Traditionele taxibedrijven beschikken al decennia lang over een eigen wagenpark, en verschillende Europese exploitanten hebben al een groot aantal elektrische auto\u2019s in gebruik.<\/p>\n

Wat opvallend is, is de industri\u00eble keten achter Green SM. Binnen hetzelfde ecosysteem worden de auto\u2019s gebouwd door VinFast, worden ze ge\u00ebxploiteerd door Green SM en wordt de laadinfrastructuur ontwikkeld door V-Green.<\/p>\n

Green SM is daarom niet zozeer een Aziatische Uber als wel een verticaal ge\u00efntegreerd mobiliteitsbedrijf. Het voordeel van het bedrijf is controle. Het nadeel is de kapitaalintensiteit. In elke nieuwe stad zijn auto\u2019s, depots, oplaadpunten, technici, vergunningen en chauffeurs nodig voordat de eerste passagier een rit kan betalen.<\/p>\n

Nederland en Zweden als volgende?<\/h4>\n

Kopenhagen is officieel de eerste Europese markt van Green SM, maar ook elders zijn de voorbereidingen al zichtbaar. Het bedrijf heeft in Nederland een evenement voor chauffeurs georganiseerd en is bezig met het werven van personeel voor de Nederlandse activiteiten, terwijl er in Zweden gesprekken zijn gevoerd over een mogelijke lancering in augustus. Voor geen van beide markten is er al een bevestigde startdatum.<\/p>\n

Belgi\u00eb lijkt nog wat verder weg. VinFast vertelde ons, Europese journalisten, eerder dit jaar dat Belgi\u00eb rond 2027 een markt voor personenauto\u2019s zou kunnen worden, na de herstructurering van het Nederlandse dealernetwerk.<\/p>\n

Green SM zou kunnen profiteren van dezelfde service- en onderdeleninfrastructuur, maar de vergunningverlening voor taxi\u2019s is verdeeld over Vlaanderen, Brussel en Walloni\u00eb. Er is nog geen lancering in Belgi\u00eb aangekondigd.<\/p>\n

Het bredere plan is gigantisch. VinFast en Green SM zijn in mei overeengekomen dat VinFast het mobiliteitsbedrijf tussen 2026 en 2030 ongeveer 1 miljoen elektrische auto\u2019s en 4 miljoen elektrische scooters zal leveren.<\/p>\n

De wagenparken kunnen fungeren als vaste klanten, mobiele showrooms en testomgevingen met hoge kilometrages voor accu\u2019s, software en aftersales-ondersteuning.<\/p>\n

Dat roept ook een ongemakkelijke vraag op. Slechts ongeveer 8% van de leveringen van VinFast in het eerste kwartaal kwam van buiten Vietnam, terwijl de autofabrikant een nettoverlies van ongeveer $1,12 miljard boekte.<\/p>\n

Door aan een aangesloten taxibedrijf te leveren, cre\u00eber je schaalvoordelen en zichtbaarheid, maar dat is niet hetzelfde als onafhankelijke klanten ervan overtuigen om de auto\u2019s te kopen.<\/p>\n

Robotaxi\u2019s komen er al aan<\/h4>\n

Het op mensen gerichte model van Green SM zou wel eens een overgangsfase kunnen blijken te zijn. De race om robotaxi\u2019s in Europa komt in een stroomversnelling, en Kopenhagen is plotseling uitgegroeid tot een van de meest interessante strijdtonelen.<\/p>\n

Slechts enkele dagen na de lancering van Green SM hebben de Chinese specialist op het gebied van autonoom rijden, WeRide, en het Deense autodeelbedrijf GreenMobility plannen bekendgemaakt voor een openbare robotaxidienst in de eerste helft van 2027, onder voorbehoud van goedkeuring door de toezichthouders.<\/p>\n

Uber en WeRide zijn ook van plan om voor eind 2026 een proefproject met robotaxi\u2019s in Madrid op te zetten, in eerste instantie met veiligheidsoperators. Apollo Go van Baidu en Freenow zijn begonnen met praktijktests in Londen, terwijl Pony.ai, Verne en Uber een commerci\u00eble dienst in Zagreb voorbereiden.<\/p>\n

Belgi\u00eb heeft WeRide al een vergunning van niveau 4 verleend voor een autonome shuttledienst in samenwerking met De Lijn in de omgeving van Leuven. Dat project rijdt op een vaste route van acht kilometer en is nog geen open stedelijke taxidienst, maar het laat zien dat autonome voertuigen in Belgi\u00eb inmiddels ook buiten gesloten testlocaties rijden.<\/p>\n

Robotaxi\u2019s beloven de chauffeur \u2013 de hoogste terugkerende kostenpost in de taxibranche \u2013 overbodig te maken en langer per dag te rijden. Ze blijven echter duur, onderworpen aan geografische beperkingen en afhankelijk van regelgevende instanties, ondersteuning op afstand en lokale wagenparkbeheerders. In de complexe steden van Europa zullen conventionele elektrische taxi\u2019s nog jarenlang gemakkelijker inzetbaar blijven.<\/p>\n

VinFast bereidt zich voor op de volgende stap. Het bedrijf heeft overeenkomsten gesloten met Autobrains en Nvidia voor Level 4-technologie en laat weten dat toekomstige VinFast-robotaxi\u2019s gebruik zullen maken van het Drive Hyperion-platform van Nvidia.<\/p>\n

Green SM zou kunnen bieden wat ontwikkelaars van autonome voertuigen nodig hebben: een beheerde vloot, gecentraliseerd onderhoud, oplaadfaciliteiten en miljoenen kilometers aan bedrijfsgegevens.<\/p>\n

Voorlopig is Kopenhagen nog geen revolutie op het gebied van robotaxi\u2019s. Het gaat om een Vietnamees conglomeraat dat taxi\u2019s inzet om een onbekend automerk bij Europese passagiers te introduceren, rit voor rit.<\/p>\n

Maar als Green SM uitbreidt naar Nederland, Zweden en uiteindelijk Belgi\u00eb, zou dit wel eens het vierde hoofdstuk in het VinFast-verhaal kunnen worden, en de brug tussen de elektrische taxi van vandaag en de zelfrijdende taxi van morgen.<\/p>\n
