Iedereen\u00a0Wie dacht dat we de klimaatklok terug konden draaien en konden terugkeren naar het oude \u2018normale\u2019, komt bedrogen uit. Zelfs als we zouden stoppen met het rijden in benzineauto\u2019s en met barbecue\u00ebn, zal niemand die nu leeft dat vroegere \u2018normale\u2019 ooit nog meemaken.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Deze ontnuchterende boodschap komt van Bart Strengers, klimaatwetenschapper bij het Nederlands Milieuagentschap. \u201c<\/span>Vanwege de traagheid van het klimaatsysteem kan het tientallen jaren, eeuwen of zelfs millennia duren voordat we de situatie kunnen omkeren. Bovendien is een netto-nuluitstoot niet voldoende; als we echt afkoeling willen, is een negatieve uitstoot noodzakelijk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Maar hoe is het zo ver gekomen?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Roger Pielke Jr., een Amerikaanse deskundige op het gebied van extreme weersomstandigheden, legt het uit in zijn blog \u2018The Honest Broker\u2019. <\/span>Sinds 1950 worden hittegolven op ons continent elk decennium 2,6 dagen langer. En voor elke graad opwarming van de aarde stijgen de extreme temperaturen in Europa met 3,4 graden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Broeikasgassen die vrijkomen bij de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen (zoals uit dieselmotoren en centrale verwarmingssystemen) verminderen de infrarode warmtestraling die door de aarde naar de ruimte wordt uitgezonden. Als gevolg daarvan heeft zich sinds 1971 een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid extra energie in het klimaatsysteem opgehoopt \u2013 voornamelijk in de oceanen (89%), en voor 1% in de atmosfeer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Effect op lange termijn<\/h4>\n

\u201cEr is meer energie beschikbaar voor elk hogedruksysteem dat wordt aangedreven door warmere winden die over warmer zeewater waaien. En dat betekent dat \u2013 als alle andere factoren gelijk blijven \u2013 de gebruikelijke weersomstandigheden waarbij sprake is van extreme hitte, nu warmer zijn dan vroeger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

De waterbalans is negatief en de bodem is erg droog, wat leidt tot meer hitte en een risico op bosbranden.\u00a0<\/span>Luchtvervuiling draagt ook bij aan hittegolven: vervuilende deeltjes blijven in de lucht hangen en weerkaatsen het zonlicht. <\/span><\/p>\n

Omgekeerd laat schonere lucht meer zonlicht door. En dan is er nog het feit dat sterk verharde, bebouwde omgevingen de warmte langer vasthouden, <\/span>waardoor de nachten warmer worden.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEr zit ons dus weinig anders over dan de CO\u2082-uitstoot aan te pakken en te beperken,\u201d zegt Pielke Jr. \u201cMaar het effect zal pas op de lange termijn merkbaar zijn.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Kortom: het wordt eerst nog warmer voordat het weer afkoelt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Onterechte passiviteit<\/h4>\n

De mate van inertie mag in geen geval worden gebruikt om nietsdoen te rechtvaardigen. Uit een recent onderzoek is gebleken dat instemming met argumenten om klimaatmaatregelen uit te stellen bijzonder sterk samenhing met een lagere steun voor milieubeleid.<\/p>\n

Het is een feit dat we de reeds veroorzaakte opwarming niet snel ongedaan kunnen maken, maar we hebben nog steeds aanzienlijke invloed op de mate waarin de opwarming zich verder voortzet.<\/p>\n

\u201cNetto nul is de rem, niet de achteruitversnelling. Negatieve emissies kunnen op termijn een deel van de opwarming ongedaan maken, terwijl aanpassingsmaatregelen het aantal sterfgevallen door hitte, het risico op branden en de schade onmiddellijk kunnen verminderen,\u201d concludeert Pielke Jr.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
