De Ford Fathom, een elektrische pick-up in de compacte tot middelgrote klasse, zal in de Verenigde Staten vanaf $28.350 dollar kosten, of $29.945 dollar inclusief afleveringskosten, wanneer de leveringen in het najaar van 2027 van start gaan.<\/p>\n<p>Daardoor is de Fathom met vijf zitplaatsen bijna net zo goedkoop als een conventionele Ford Maverick en aanzienlijk goedkoper dan de huidige grote elektrische pick-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Het is het eerste model van Ford dat is gebaseerd op het Universal EV Platform, ontwikkeld door een klein \u2018skunkworks\u2019-team dat tot taak had elektrische auto\u2019s te maken die qua kosten kunnen concurreren met Chinese fabrikanten.<\/p>\n<p>De basisprijs geldt voor de Standard Range-versie, wat bevestigt dat er in ieder geval \u00e9\u00e9n versie met een grotere accu zal volgen. Ford heeft nog geen gegevens bekendgemaakt over de accucapaciteit, het rijbereik, de laadsnelheid, het vermogen of de trekcapaciteit. Het bedrijf heeft wel bevestigd dat er versies met achterwielaandrijving en vierwielaandrijving zullen komen, evenals accu\u2019s in verschillende maten en lithium-ijzerfosfaat (LFP)-cellen.<\/p>\n<p>Het model met achterwielaandrijving maakt gebruik van een door Ford ontwikkelde permanente-magneetmotor. Bij de vierwielaangedreven versies is daar een inductiemotor op de vooras aan toegevoegd. Het platform maakt gebruik van een 400-volt aandrijfsysteem in plaats van de duurdere 800-volt-technologie die in veel premium-EV\u2019s wordt toegepast.<\/p>\n<h4>Ongeveer 51 kWh?<\/h4>\n<p>Een cijfer dat vaak wordt genoemd, is een bruikbare accucapaciteit van ongeveer 51 kWh. Dat is geen officieel cijfer van Ford. Het is gebaseerd op een eerdere uitspraak dat de accu\u2019s van de nieuwe EV-serie ongeveer 15% kleiner zouden zijn dan het 60,5 kWh-accupakket in een BYD Atto 3.<\/p>\n<p>Zo\u2019n accupakket zou zinvol kunnen zijn voor het Standard Range-model, maar waarschijnlijk niet voor een versie die volgens de Amerikaanse EPA-cyclus een actieradius van ongeveer 300 mijl (483 km) haalt. Leidinggevenden bij Ford hebben aangegeven dat klanten op zoek zijn naar dat soort actieradius en dat de Fathom verschillende opties zal bieden, wat doet vermoeden dat er een grotere accu beschikbaar zal zijn voor de Extended Range-versie.<\/p>\n<p>Ford wil enorme accu\u2019s in pick-ups vermijden en zet in plaats daarvan in op een lager gewicht, betere aerodynamica en een vereenvoudigde elektrische architectuur om de effici\u00ebntie te verbeteren.<\/p>\n<p>Ondanks de lage prijs zal het instapmodel van de Fathom zeker niet karig uitgerust zijn. Het beschikt over een groot touchscreen met hoge resolutie, Apple CarPlay en Android Auto, een digitale sleutel, een opbergruimte voorin en elektrisch bedienbare ramen aan beide zijden. Elk voertuig zal ook geschikt zijn voor BlueCruise, hoewel voor de activering mogelijk een abonnement vereist is.<\/p>\n<h4>Tegen Slate en Maverick<\/h4>\n<p>In Amerika zijn de meest vergelijkbare modellen niet de Rivian R1T of de Tesla Cybertruck \u2013 die ruim boven de $60.000 liggen \u2013 maar Fords eigen Maverick en de binnenkort te verschijnen elektrische pick-up Slate.<\/p>\n<p>Slate mikt nog lager met een bewust minimalistisch voertuig. Ford presenteert de Fathom daarentegen als een praktische gezinsauto met een laadbak. Volgens het bedrijf biedt het interieur meer ruimte voor passagiers dan een Toyota RAV4, zelfs als de laadbak en de frunk nog niet worden meegerekend.<\/p>\n<p>Of de Fathom naar Europa komt, is nog niet duidelijk. Ford heeft nog geen Europese verkoopplannen aangekondigd, maar de kans daarop is niet langer verwaarloosbaar. Het bedrijf zegt dat het platform \u2018wereldwijd inzetbaar\u2019 is, ontworpen voor rechtsgestuurde auto\u2019s en bedoeld voor de export.<\/p>\n<p>Dat betekent niet dat de Fathom zelf zeker de Atlantische Oceaan zal oversteken. De Europese strategie van Ford richt zich voornamelijk op lokaal geproduceerde auto\u2019s en betaalbare elektrische auto\u2019s die samen met Renault zijn ontwikkeld. Een compacte crossover op basis van dezelfde architectuur zou hier waarschijnlijk een grotere markt hebben dan een pick-up.<\/p>\n<h4>De Belgische zaak wordt interessant<\/h4>\n<p>Toch is het economisch gezien aantrekkelijker geworden om een in Kentucky gebouwde Fathom te importeren. Sinds 1 juli heeft de EU in het kader van de handelsovereenkomst tussen de EU en de VS de invoerrechten op Amerikaanse industri\u00eble goederen afgeschaft. Belgische kopers betalen nog steeds 21% btw, terwijl transport, typegoedkeuring en distributie extra kosten met zich meebrengen.<\/p>\n<p>Een directe omrekening van de Amerikaanse prijs is daarom onrealistisch, maar een Belgische vanafprijs van \u20ac 35.000 tot \u20ac 39.000 is denkbaar als Ford de Fathom agressief op de markt brengt. Een Extended Range-versie zou in de lage \u20ac 40.000-klasse kunnen uitkomen.<\/p>\n<p>Daarmee zou hij de concurrentie aangaan met de KGM Musso EV, die al op de Belgische markt verkrijgbaar is vanaf \u20ac 39.990 inclusief btw, met een LFP-accu van 81 kWh en een WLTP-actieradius van 420 km. De vierwielaangedreven versie is verkrijgbaar vanaf \u20ac 44.490 en biedt een trekvermogen tot 2,3 ton.<\/p>\n<p>Daarboven staat de Maxus eTerron 9, die in Belgi\u00eb vanaf \u20ac 67.954 kost, met een accu van 102 kWh, een WLTP-actieradius van 430 km, vierwielaandrijving en een trekvermogen van 3,5 ton.<\/p>\n<p>Ford zou dus niet op een lege markt stappen. Maar als het bedrijf de betaalbaarheid van de Fathom in de VS kan vertalen naar een Europese prijs van minder dan 40.000 euro, zou het iets kunnen cre\u00ebren wat Europa op dit moment nauwelijks kent: een compacte, elektrische lifestyle-pick-up met vijf zitplaatsen, geprijsd als een gangbare elektrische crossover.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ford has put a name and a price on the first model from its radically simplified new electric-car platform.
