In Belgi\u00eb en Nederland zal het verwisselen van batterijen waarschijnlijk niet op korte termijn deel gaan uitmaken van de Firefly-ervaring.<\/p>\n<p>De nieuwe generatie werd op 7 augustus ge\u00efntroduceerd, toen NIO tevens zijn 4.000ste batterijwisselstation in China opende en de grens van 120 miljoen batterijwissels overschreed.<\/p>\n<h4>E\u00e9n station voor drie merken<\/h4>\n<p>Het station van de vijfde generatie past zich automatisch aan verschillende voertuigen aan en lokaliseert de bevestigingspunten van hun accu\u2019s, waarbij het geschikt is voor wielbases tot 3,5 meter. Voor het eerst kan \u00e9\u00e9n enkel station alle drie de NIO-merken bedienen: NIO, Onvo en Firefly.<\/p>\n<p>Dat is van belang omdat de Firefly in Mini-uitvoering vanaf het begin was ontworpen met een uitneembare accu, maar door zijn korte wielbasis niet compatibel was met de bestaande NIO-laadstations. Plannen voor een apart, goedkoper Firefly-netwerk werden later geschrapt. Gen 5 lost dat probleem nu op in China.<\/p>\n<p>In Europa ligt het anders. NIO heeft momenteel 61 wisselstations op het continent in kaart gebracht, waaronder een aantal in Nederland en \u00e9\u00e9n in Edegem bij Antwerpen, maar geen enkel daarvan is van de vijfde generatie. Nederlandse en Belgische Fireflies kunnen er daarom geen gebruik van maken.<\/p>\n<p>Er is weinig reden om een snelle verandering te verwachten. NIO heeft de verdere uitbouw van zijn eigen Europese laad- en batterijwisselinfrastructuur stopgezet, omdat het bedrijf overschakelt op een minder kapitaalintensieve uitbreidingsstrategie die sterker leunt op lokale partners.<\/p>\n<h4>Te weinig auto's<\/h4>\n<p>Het potenti\u00eble publiek is sowieso erg klein. In Nederland, een van de oudste Europese markten van NIO, rijden volgens gegevens van de RDW slechts 887 bij NIO geregistreerde auto\u2019s rond, waaronder 97 Fireflies.<\/p>\n<p>Belgi\u00eb is nog kleiner. FEBIAC registreerde tussen 2024 en juli 2026 slechts 97 nieuwe NIO-registraties, waarvan 38 dit jaar, hoewel in de openbare cijfers geen onderscheid wordt gemaakt tussen Firefly en het merk NIO.<\/p>\n<p>Bij dergelijke volumes is het moeilijk te rechtvaardigen om Europese stations speciaal voor Firefly te upgraden. En dat betekent een behoorlijke ommekeer.<\/p>\n<p>Het verwisselen van accu\u2019s werd ooit gepresenteerd als een van de belangrijkste troeven van NIO om Europa te veroveren. In Nederland bood het relatief dichte netwerk in de beginfase eigenaren een werkelijk andere EV-ervaring, terwijl het station in Edegem was bedoeld om Nederlandse NIO-bestuurders te bedienen die zuidwaarts naar Frankrijk reisden.<\/p>\n<p>Firefly legt nu duidelijk de zwakke plek van die strategie bloot. Europese klanten kunnen een auto kopen die is ontworpen voor het verwisselen van batterijen, en Belgen kunnen zelfs langs een NIO-verwisselstation rijden, maar ze kunnen er geen gebruik van maken.<\/p>\n<h4>Het opladen komt in een stroomversnelling<\/h4>\n<p>Er is ook een bredere vraag: is het verwisselen van accu\u2019s nog steeds zinvol voor personenauto\u2019s, nu het conventionele opladen aanzienlijk sneller gaat?<\/p>\n<p>NIO is er duidelijk van overtuigd dat dit in China het geval is. Het verwisselen van een accu duurt slechts enkele minuten, maakt een einde aan wachtrijen bij oplaadpunten en maakt het mogelijk om accu\u2019s binnen het station op te laden wanneer de vraag naar elektriciteit en de prijzen lager zijn. Het ondersteunt bovendien het \u2018Battery-as-a-Service\u2019-model van NIO, waarbij de dure accu wordt losgekoppeld van het autobezit.<\/p>\n<p>In Europa zijn de economische omstandigheden minder gunstig. Een wisselstation is complexer en duurder dan het plaatsen van gelijkstroomladers, vereist een voorraad dure reservebatterijen en moet dagelijks intensief worden gebruikt om rendabel te zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Ondertussen kunnen elektrische auto\u2019s met een spanning van 800 volt steeds vaker het grootste deel van hun actieradius in ongeveer 15 minuten terugwinnen. Een besparing van nog eens tien minuten wordt daardoor een minder overtuigend argument voor de aanleg van een volledig parallelle infrastructuur.<\/p>\n<h4>Vloten zijn wellicht een betere keuze<\/h4>\n<p>Dat betekent niet dat ruilhandel ten dode is opgeschreven. De grootste toekomst ervan in Europa ligt wellicht elders.<\/p>\n<p>Taxi\u2019s, ride-hailing-auto\u2019s, bestelwagens en vrachtwagens leggen veel kilometers af en lopen verlies als ze stilstaan. Ze keren bovendien vaak terug naar dezelfde gebieden, waardoor het eenvoudiger is om een klein aantal wisselstations bezet te houden.<\/p>\n<p>Onderzoek naar elektrische taxivloten wijst eveneens uit dat opladen en het verwisselen van accu\u2019s elkaar kunnen aanvullen wanneer het gebruik van de voertuigen belangrijker is dan het gemak van de infrastructuur.<\/p>\n<p>CATL lijkt juist op die markt in te zetten. \u2019s Werelds grootste batterijfabrikant bouwt in China een merk-overschrijdend ecosysteem voor het verwisselen van batterijen op en wil dit concept naar Europa brengen.<\/p>\n<p>Voor vrachtwagens begint dit al vorm te krijgen: CATL en Octopus Energy zijn van plan Europese hubs op te zetten waar batterijen van meer dan 500 kWh in ongeveer vijf minuten kunnen worden verwisseld; de eerste locaties in het Verenigd Koninkrijk worden vanaf 2027 verwacht.<\/p>\n<p>Het 4.000ste station van NIO laat dan ook zien dat het verwisselen van accu\u2019s nog lang niet tot het verleden behoort. China zou zelfs kunnen aantonen dat dit ook voor particuliere automobilisten kan werken wanneer miljoenen compatibele auto\u2019s gebruikmaken van een dicht netwerk.<\/p>\n<p>In Europa ligt de situatie anders. Door het snellere opladen en de lage verkoopcijfers van NIO is een netwerk voor het verwisselen van accu\u2019s voor personenauto\u2019s moeilijk te rechtvaardigen. Voor taxi\u2019s, wagenparken en zware vrachtwagens kost elke minuut stilstand echter geld.<\/p>\n<p>Voor Nederlandse en Belgische Firefly-eigenaren is de ironie eenvoudiger: bij hun auto\u2019s kunnen de accu\u2019s worden verwisseld.
