Sinds 13 augustus is de nieuwe Europese verordening inzake de circulariteit van voertuigen van kracht. Deze verplicht fabrikanten niet alleen om voertuigen te recyclen, maar ook om ze zo te ontwerpen dat ze gemakkelijker kunnen worden gedemonteerd en hergebruikt, en om teruggewonnen materialen weer in nieuwe auto\u2019s te verwerken.<\/p>\n<p>Belgi\u00eb bevindt zich in een relatief sterke positie. Febelauto, dat namens fabrikanten en importeurs de verwerking van afgedankte voertuigen co\u00f6rdineert, rapporteert al een nuttig terugwinningspercentage van 98%.<\/p>\n<p>Vanaf 2032 moet ten minste 15% van het in nieuwe auto\u2019s gebruikte plastic afkomstig zijn uit gerecycleerde bronnen. Dat stijgt tot 25% in 2036, waarbij een deel daarvan specifiek afkomstig moet zijn uit oude voertuigen. Naar verwachting zullen er ook eisen volgen voor staal, aluminium, magnesium en kritieke grondstoffen. De meeste bepalingen treden twee jaar na de inwerkingtreding van de verordening in werking.<\/p>\n<p>De wetgeving gaat veel verder dan het vermalen van oude auto\u2019s en het scheiden van metalen. Onderdelen moeten gemakkelijker te demonteren, te repareren en te hergebruiken zijn. Tegelijkertijd zullen fabrikanten en importeurs een grotere financi\u00eble en organisatorische verantwoordelijkheid op zich nemen zodra hun voertuigen het einde van hun levensduur hebben bereikt.<\/p>\n<h4>Belgi\u00eb beschikt al over de infrastructuur<\/h4>\n<p>Een groot deel van de benodigde inzamelingsinfrastructuur is in Belgi\u00eb al aanwezig. Febelauto co\u00f6rdineert het beheer van afgedankte voertuigen en batterijen van elektrische auto\u2019s via een collectief systeem dat bijna de gehele markt bestrijkt.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025 waren 31 producenten en importeurs van elektrische voertuigen aangesloten bij Febelauto, die samen 79 merken vertegenwoordigden en goed waren voor 99.82% van de hybride en elektrische voertuigen die op de Belgische markt werden gebracht.<\/p>\n<p>Uit de samenstelling van de raad van bestuur blijkt hoe breed die samenwerking is. Onder voorzitterschap van Henry Wattel, CEO van Smart Belgium, bestaat de raad uit vertegenwoordigers van D\u2019Ieteren Automotive, Volvo Cars, Renault Group, Polestar en Ford, evenals uit de recyclingindustrie en organisaties zoals Traxio, Denuo en Agoria.<\/p>\n<p>Dit betekent dat strengere Europese regels niet vereisen dat elke fabrikant een afzonderlijk Belgisch recyclingnetwerk moet opzetten. Concurrerende merken kunnen een deel van hun producentenverantwoordelijkheden nakomen via hetzelfde erkende ecosysteem voor inzameling, verwerking en recycling.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025 behaalde Febelauto een nuttig terugwinningspercentage van 98% voor afgedankte voertuigen, bestaande uit bijna 25% hergebruik, 69% materiaalrecycling en een kleiner aandeel dat als energie werd teruggewonnen.<\/p>\n<h4>EV-accu's vormen de volgende uitdaging<\/h4>\n<p>Elektrificatie zorgt zowel voor meer complexiteit als voor meer waarde. Vorig jaar werden in Belgi\u00eb 5.172 herbruikbare of afgedankte EV-accu\u2019s en -modules ingezameld, met een totaalgewicht van 551 ton. Febelauto beschikt nu over tien gespecialiseerde, erkende centra die in staat zijn om elektrisch aangedreven voertuigen en hoogspanningsaccu\u2019s te verwerken.<\/p>\n<p>Het streven is steeds meer om onderdelen te behouden in plaats van alles onmiddellijk tot grondstoffen te verwerken. In 2025 werden 31% ingezamelde EV-accu\u2019s hergebruikt of ingezet voor \u2018second-life\u2019-toepassingen, terwijl 37% werden gerecycled.<\/p>\n<p>Dat is economisch gezien van belang. Door een batterijmodule, elektromotor of elektronisch onderdeel te hergebruiken, blijft een aanzienlijk groter deel van de waarde behouden dan wanneer deze wordt versnipperd of omgesmolten tot grondstof.<\/p>\n<p>Febelauto bereidt zich ook voor op de uitbreiding van de Europese wetgeving, waardoor de verantwoordelijkheden niet langer beperkt blijven tot personenauto\u2019s, maar ook gelden voor categorie\u00ebn zoals vrachtwagens, bussen en motorfietsen, en waardoor een betere traceerbaarheid in de gehele verwerkingsketen vereist wordt.<\/p>\n<h4>Renault laat zien hoe autofabrikanten zich herorganiseren<\/h4>\n<p>De verandering blijft niet beperkt tot de autokerkhof. Circulaire economie dringt steeds verder door in de organisatiestructuur van de auto-industrie en wordt een integraal onderdeel van productontwikkeling, inkoop, grondstoffenstrategie en corporate governance.<\/p>\n<p>De Renault-groep biedt hier een recent voorbeeld van. Op 1 juli heeft de groep de nieuwe functie van algemeen secretaris in het leven geroepen en Quitterie de Pelleport daarin benoemd. Haar brede takenpakket omvat juridische zaken, audit, risicobeheer, ethiek en compliance, maar ook duurzaamheid, strategische partnerschappen en de activiteiten van Renault op het gebied van de circulaire economie, waaronder <em>De toekomst is NEUTRAAL<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Renault verklaarde dat de nieuwe structuur is ontworpen om het bedrijf te helpen anticiperen op veranderingen op het gebied van regelgeving, de industrie en het milieu. De nieuwe Europese regels illustreren precies die verschuiving: wat er met een auto gebeurt aan het einde van zijn levensduur, bepaalt in toenemende mate hoe de volgende auto wordt ontworpen en welke materialen fabrikanten inkopen.<\/p>\n<p>Met het initiatief \u2018The Future Is NEUTRAL\u2019 streeft Renault er ook naar de industri\u00eble kringloop te sluiten. De AUTOLOOP-activiteiten van het bedrijf hebben al betrekking op polypropyleen, koper, aluminium en edelmetalen, terwijl er met EV-accu\u2019s ook lithium, nikkel en kobalt bijkomen.<\/p>\n<p>In plaats van toe te staan dat teruggewonnen materialen worden gebruikt voor toepassingen met een lagere waarde, wil Renault dat een groter deel ervan weer in de autoproductie terechtkomt.<\/p>\n<p>In het kader van haar \u2018futuREady\u2019-strategie streeft de groep ernaar dat tegen 2030 30% van de in elk voertuig gebruikte materialen afkomstig is uit de circulaire economie.<\/p>\n<p>De Pelleport brengt bovendien ervaring mee uit een andere sterk gereguleerde grondstoffensector. Voordat ze bij Renault in dienst trad, werkte ze tien jaar bij chemieconcern Solvay, waar ze uiteindelijk de functie van Group General Counsel bekleedde. Die achtergrond wordt steeds relevanter nu grondstoffen, recycling, milieuregelgeving en maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen steeds meer met elkaar verweven raken.<\/p>\n<h4>Van autokerkhof tot leverancier van grondstoffen<\/h4>\n<p>Renault is slechts \u00e9\u00e9n voorbeeld van een transformatie waarmee alle fabrikanten te maken zullen krijgen. De aanwezigheid van Smart, D\u2019Ieteren Automotive, Volvo, Polestar, Ford en Renault binnen Febelauto laat zien in hoeverre deze uitdaging in Belgi\u00eb al gezamenlijk wordt aangepakt.<\/p>\n<p>De volgende stap is een grotere uitdaging. Europa wil niet alleen dat auto\u2019s op een effici\u00ebnte manier worden afgevoerd. Het wil dat kunststoffen, metalen, accu\u2019s en herbruikbare onderdelen uit oude voertuigen worden teruggewonnen en opnieuw in nieuwe voertuigen worden verwerkt.<\/p>\n<p>Dat verandert ook de rol van organisaties zoals Febelauto. Het einde van de automobielketen wordt geleidelijk aan een toeleverancier voor het begin van de volgende keten.<\/p>\n<p>Voor de Europese auto-industrie is een oude auto steeds minder een stuk afval en steeds meer een bron van grondstoffen voor de auto die hem vervangt.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Europe has tightened the rules governing what happens to a car throughout its life.
