{"id":191984,"date":"2026-08-19T12:20:47","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/?p=191984"},"modified":"2026-08-19T11:54:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T09:54:49","slug":"from-fatbike-to-skinnybike-dutch-e-bike-craze-finds-a-new-loophole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/08\/19\/from-fatbike-to-skinnybike-dutch-e-bike-craze-finds-a-new-loophole\/","title":{"rendered":"Van fatbike tot skinnybike: de Nederlandse e-bike-rage vindt een nieuw achterdeurtje"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Een nieuwe <span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In Nederland is een nieuw fenomeen opgekomen: de skinnybike \u2013 de tegenhanger van de fatbike. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Skinnybikes hebben banden die tot zes centimeter smaller zijn dan die van een fatbike. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Net als fatbikes zijn het in theorie elektrische fietsen met trapondersteuning tot 25 kilometer per uur. Je moet dus blijven trappen om vooruit te komen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In de praktijk kunnen dergelijke fietsen echter gemakkelijk zo worden aangepast dat ze de toegestane snelheid van 25 kilometer per uur overschrijden. De Nederlandse politie heeft onlangs een aangepaste \u2018skinnybike\u2019 met een topsnelheid van 118 kilometer per uur uit het verkeer gehaald.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Getunede skinnybikes zijn vaak<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\"> illegaal omgebouwd met een gashendel, waardoor gebruikers niet meer hoeven te trappen. Vanaf dat moment is het geen elektrische fiets meer, maar een bromfiets, en moeten gebruikers minstens 16 jaar oud zijn en <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">een verzekering hebben.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Toename van het aantal ongevallen en diefstallen<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In Nederland proberen fabrikanten hiervan gebruik te maken om de regelgeving rond fatbikes te omzeilen. Fatbikes zijn in Nederland inmiddels een bekend fenomeen, waarbij het risico op ongevallen en diefstal steeds groter wordt. Daarom stellen steeds meer verzekeringsmaatschappijen zeer strenge voorwaarden voor de dekking, of weigeren ze deze simpelweg <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2024\/07\/17\/dutch-fatbikes-have-problems-getting-insured\/\">weigeren hen te verzekeren<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Steden als Amsterdam en Enschede hebben deze voertuigen uit de binnenstad verbannen. <\/span><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Ook in Belgi\u00eb zijn fatbikes niet overal welkom \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2025\/08\/13\/hasselt-is-considering-banning-fatbikes\/\">Hasselt<\/a> heeft overwogen om ze te verbieden \u2013 maar in de praktijk is het moeilijk om fietsen op basis van de bandbreedte te verbieden. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Belgisch en Nederlands recht<\/h4>\n<p>Ondertussen heeft de Nederlandse regering een bredere aanpak aangekondigd en werkt zij aan een helmplicht vanaf 2027 voor jongeren onder de 18 jaar die op alle e-bikes en andere lichte elektrische voertuigen rijden, juist omdat het zo moeilijk is gebleken om een waterdicht juridisch onderscheid te maken tussen een fatbike en een andere e-bike.<\/p>\n<p>De Belgische wetgeving erkent \u2018fatbike\u2019 of \u2018skinnybike\u2019 evenmin als wettelijke categorie\u00ebn, maar kent daarnaast wel de categorie \u2018gemotoriseerde fiets\u2019 (gemotoriseerde fiets) tot 1 kW en 25 km\/u, waarvoor verschillende vereisten gelden, waaronder een minimumleeftijd van 16 jaar en een conformiteitscertificaat.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Maar waarom zijn deze voertuigen zo populair?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Fatbikes en skinnybikes (en conventionele e-bikes) zijn in principe hetzelfde: voertuigen met een maximaal continu motorvermogen van 250 W en trapondersteuning die bij 25 km\/u uitschakelt.<\/p>\n<p>Maar blijkbaar ligt de aantrekkingskracht van fatbikes \u2013 en nu ook skinnybikes \u2013 niet alleen in hun uiterlijk of het gemak waarmee ze kunnen worden aangepast. Ze vormen ook een goedkoop alternatief voor de traditionele Europese e-bike en, tot op zekere hoogte, voor de elektrische bromfiets.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025 kostte een gemiddelde e-bike in Nederland \u20ac 2.872, terwijl een gemiddelde fatbike slechts \u20ac 1.198 kostte, oftewel 58% minder. De prijzen van Nederlandse elektrische scooters liggen tussen de \u20ac 2.000 en \u20ac 3.500, waarbij snellere modellen de \u20ac 4.000 overschrijden.<\/p>\n<p>Die cijfers verklaren de aantrekkingskracht op jongeren: voor \u20ac 700 tot \u20ac 1.000 krijg je iets dat meer op een kleine motorfiets of bromfiets lijkt dan op een traditionele fiets, maar dat juridisch gezien wel de voordelen van een fiets behoudt zolang het aan de voorschriften voldoet.\u00a0In Nederland werden in 2025 ongeveer 108.000 fatbikes verkocht, wat neerkomt op ongeveer 14% van alle nieuwe fietsen.<\/p>\n<p>Belgi\u00eb zit nog lang niet op dat niveau. Het zit er niet aan dat Belgen een hekel hebben aan elektrische fietsen. Ze hebben de goedkope, bromfietsachtige fatbike gewoon lang niet zo massaal omarmd als de Nederlanders.<\/p>\n<p>In Belgi\u00eb werden in 2025 578.737 fietsen verkocht, en fatbikes waren goed voor iets minder dan 1% van de markt, oftewel \u2018slechts\u2019 5.800 stuks.\u00a0De Nederlandse fatbikemarkt is dus ongeveer 14 keer zo groot qua marktaandeel, en misschien wel bijna twintig keer zo groot in absolute cijfers.<\/p>\n<h4>En waar kwamen ze vandaan?<\/h4>\n<p>De moderne fatbikes zijn voortgekomen uit experimenten in Alaska en New Mexico aan het eind van de jaren tachtig en in de jaren negentig, toen fietsers zeer brede banden nodig hadden om over sneeuw en zacht zand te kunnen rijden.\u00a0<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Later ontwikkelden ze zich tot elektrisch ondersteunde fatbikes voor in de stad en uiteindelijk tot goedkope vervoermiddelen in bromfietsstijl voor jongeren.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>De skinnybike zelf lijkt in wezen een Nederlands fenomeen te zijn, ontstaan rond 2024 en ontwikkeld in afwachting van wetgeving die specifiek gericht was op fatbikes.<\/p>\n<p>Winkeliers verkopen ze openlijk als alternatief voor gemeentelijke beperkingen op fatbikes. Deze elektrische voertuigen van minder dan 1.000 euro laten zien hoe snel de sector producten kan aanpassen om binnen de wettelijke definitie van een fiets te blijven.<\/p>\n<h4>Hoe zit het met de handhaving?<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">Het aandrijfsysteem van een e-bike verschilt van dat van een bromfiets, waardoor de politie bij controles geschikte apparatuur moet gebruiken, zoals een aangepaste vermogensmeter of een snelheidsmeter \u2013 een apparaat waarmee de snelheid van een rijdend voertuig wordt gemeten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">De Nederlandse politie maakt al gebruik van dergelijke dynamometers, en de politiezone Mechelen heeft er eerder dit jaar een geleend uit Nederland.
