Waymo heeft zijn nieuwe robotaxi in Ojai nu opengesteld voor gewone betalende klanten, nadat de Californische toezichthouders het voertuig hebben goedgekeurd voor commerci\u00eble ritten zonder bestuurder.<\/p>\n<p>Deze uitrol betekent een aanzienlijke verbetering ten opzichte van juni, toen Newmobility.news <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/06\/01\/waymo-starts-free-ride-hailing-with-new-ojai-robotaxi\/\">voor het eerst gemeld in de Ojai<\/a> en de eerste gratis ritten in San Francisco, Los Angeles en Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>En Waymo lijkt zich op nog veel meer voor te bereiden: uit douanegegevens blijkt dat er al meer dan 3.200 door Zeekr gebouwde Ojai-basisvoertuigen naar de Verenigde Staten zijn verscheept, ondanks de hoge invoerheffingen die op Chinese elektrische auto\u2019s zijn opgelegd.<\/p>\n<h4>Selecteer gebruikers met vroege toegang<\/h4>\n<p>Tot nu toe werd de Ojai voornamelijk aangeboden aan een selecte groep gebruikers met vroege toegang, die gratis konden rijden omdat Waymo nog geen toestemming had gekregen om passagiers te laten betalen voor ritten in het nieuwe voertuig.<\/p>\n<p>Dat veranderde op 14 augustus. De California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) heeft de Ojai goedgekeurd voor betaalde zelfrijdende personenvervoersdiensten en tegelijkertijd groen licht gegeven voor een aanzienlijke geografische uitbreiding van de commerci\u00eble activiteiten van Waymo in delen van 18 Californische counties. De daadwerkelijke uitrol zal geleidelijk plaatsvinden en niet van de ene op de andere dag.<\/p>\n<p>Waymo heeft de ritten in Ojai inmiddels opengesteld voor alle klanten in San Francisco, Los Angeles en Phoenix. Passagiers kunnen het nieuwe model nog niet specifiek aanvragen, maar kunnen er mogelijk een toegewezen krijgen wanneer ze een gewone Waymo-rit bestellen.<\/p>\n<h4>3.200 auto\u2019s ondanks enorme invoerheffingen<\/h4>\n<p>Nog veelzeggender dan de commerci\u00eble lancering is het aantal auto\u2019s dat blijkbaar in de wachtrij staat. Volgens vrachtbrieven die ImportGenius voor Forbes heeft geanalyseerd, heeft Zeekr sinds 2024 meer dan 3.200 CM1e-exemplaren \u2013 de interne aanduiding voor het basisvoertuig Ojai \u2013 via de haven van Los Angeles verscheept. Alleen al in 2026 kwamen er meer dan 2.600 aan.<\/p>\n<p>Waymo heeft dat totaal niet bevestigd, maar Zeekr heeft voor dit voertuig geen andere bekende klant in de VS. ImportGenius noemt ook 3.200 als minimum, omdat het alleen douanedocumenten meetelt waarin expliciet Zeekr of het voertuigmodel wordt genoemd.<\/p>\n<p>Dat is een heel ander beeld dan de voorzichtige uitrol in mei, toen Waymo aanvankelijk sprak van iets meer dan 100 Ojais. Begin augustus meldde het bedrijf dat er al meer dan 300 passagiers in het vroege-toegangsprogramma vervoerden.<\/p>\n<p>Forbes schat dat in China gebouwde elektrische auto\u2019s, zoals de Ojai, momenteel te maken hebben met een effectieve Amerikaanse tarieflast van 127,5%. Bij een hypothetische Chinese voertuigprijs van $39.000 zou dat de prijs van het basisvoertuig opdrijven tot $89.000, nog voordat Waymo zijn technologie voor autonoom rijden heeft ge\u00efnstalleerd.<\/p>\n<p>Toch zou het nog wel eens duurder kunnen uitvallen om Ojai op te geven. Waymo en Zeekr waren al jaren voordat Washington zijn tariefmuur oprichtte begonnen met de ontwikkeling van het voertuig, en de zesde generatie hardware voor autonoom rijden van Waymo is speciaal voor dit platform ontworpen.<\/p>\n<p>De in China gebouwde auto\u2019s worden ook zonder sensoren, computerapparatuur en connectiviteit in de VS geleverd, omdat deze in strijd zouden kunnen zijn met de Amerikaanse beperkingen op Chinese connected vehicles. Waymo installeert zijn eigen, in de VS ontwikkelde systeem voor autonoom rijden in zijn fabriek in Mesa, Arizona.<\/p>\n<h4>Een Chinese robotaxi met Zweedse roots<\/h4>\n<p>De Ojai simpelweg een Chinese robottaxi noemen, is daarom slechts het halve verhaal. Hij heeft verrassend sterke Europese wortels.<\/p>\n<p>Toen Waymo en Geely in 2021 hun samenwerking aankondigden, omschreef Waymo het voertuig uitdrukkelijk als \u201cin Zweden speciaal ontworpen voor autonome ride-hailing\u201d. In tegenstelling tot de Jaguar I-Pace hoeft het interieur niet rond een conventionele bestuurder te worden ontworpen \/Waymo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dat verklaart waarom de Ojai minder lijkt op een conventionele auto die is aangepast voor autonoom rijden, en meer op een kleine shuttlebus. De vlakke vloer, de zeer lage instaphoogte, de grote schuifdeuren en het ruime interieur zijn ontworpen om passagiers te vervoeren in plaats van plaats te bieden aan een bestuurder.<\/p>\n<p>Het eigendom en de productie zijn echter Chinees. Zeekr maakt deel uit van Geely en de auto\u2019s worden in China geproduceerd. Het autonome besturingssysteem komt uit Californi\u00eb. In die zin kan Ojai het best worden omschreven als: ontwikkeld in Zweden, gebouwd in China en geamericaniseerd door Waymo.<\/p>\n<h4>Zou het uiteindelijk naar Europa kunnen terugkeren?<\/h4>\n<p>De Zweedse connectie wordt vooral interessant omdat Waymo al bezig is met de voorbereidingen voor zijn eerste Europese activiteiten. Het bedrijf voert in Londen tests uit met zelfrijdende auto\u2019s, waarbij veiligheidsspecialisten achter het stuur zitten, en streeft ernaar om daar volledig autonome ride-hailing-diensten te introduceren. Wat voor het Europese vasteland nog belangrijker is: Waymo maakte in april bekend dat het zijn Britse team uitbreidt, deels om \u201conze activiteiten in Europa uit te breiden\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Er is geen bevestiging dat de Ojai zelf in Londen of elders in Europa zal worden ingezet. De huidige Britse testvoertuigen van Waymo zijn Jaguar I-Paces, terwijl het bedrijf ook in de VS geproduceerde Hyundai Ioniq 5\u2019s aan zijn Amerikaanse wagenpark toevoegt.<\/p>\n<p>Toch zou de Ojai een logische kandidaat zijn voor toekomstige uitbreiding naar Europa.
