OOp 22 augustus bereikte de zeewatertemperatuur (tussen 60 graden zuiderbreedte en 60 graden noorderbreedte) het hoogste niveau ooit: 21,10 \u00b0C, de hoogste ooit gemeten temperatuur van het zeeoppervlak. <\/span><\/p>\n

De Europese aardobservatiedienst Copernicus heeft dit maandag in een persbericht bekendgemaakt.\u00a0<\/span>De nieuwe cijfers laten zelfs zien dat <\/span>bhet vorige record van 21,09 \u00b0C, dat in maart 2024 werd gevestigd, verbreken.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Het moment waarop dit nieuwe record is gevestigd, is opmerkelijk. Normaal gesproken bereiken de zeewatertemperaturen hun hoogtepunt in maart of april, na de zomer op het zuidelijk halfrond. Maar t<\/span>Het nieuwe record komt niet als een verrassing. De afgelopen maanden zijn er voortdurend (bijna-)recordhoge zeetemperaturen gemeten.<\/span><\/p>\n

Extreme gevolgen<\/h4>\n

De zee fungeert als een enorme warmtebuffer. Water warmt veel langzamer op dan land, maar koelt ook veel langzamer af. Daardoor kan de warmte van een lange, zonnige zomer zich wekenlang in de bovenste laag van het water ophopen. <\/span><\/p>\n

Door de combinatie van de opwarming van de aarde, overvloedige zonneschijn, hogedruksystemen en lichte wind is de zee uitzonderlijk sterk opgewarmd.<\/span><\/p>\n

Warmer zeewater heeft gevolgen voor zowel de mens als de natuur. Warmer water zorgt bijvoorbeeld voor een stijging van de zeespiegel, omdat het uitzet als het warmer wordt.\u00a0<\/span>Hittegolven in zee brengen schade toe aan belangrijke ecosystemen, zoals koraalriffen, waardoor mogelijk de hele voedselketen in gevaar komt. <\/span>Bovendien draagt warm zeewater ook bij aan extreme weersverschijnselen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Een warmere oceaan voert meer warmte en waterdamp af naar de atmosfeer, waardoor er zwaardere regenval en hevigere stormen kunnen ontstaan.\u00a0<\/span>Warmere oceanen kunnen ook minder CO2 opslaan. In Europa gingen de recordhoge zeewatertemperaturen langs de Atlantische kust en in het westelijke deel van de Middellandse Zee gepaard met wijdverspreide sterke of ernstige mariene hittegolven, die gevolgen hadden voor kustgemeenschappen en ecosystemen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Belgische kustwateren<\/h4>\n

In Belgi\u00eb hebben wetenschappers ontdekt dat biodiversiteit<\/a> In de Belgische kustwateren is de samenstelling van de visstand de afgelopen decennia ingrijpend veranderd als gevolg van de opwarming van de aarde. Typische koudwatersoorten, zoals bruine garnalen, grondels en haring\/sprot, komen nu veel minder voor, terwijl warmwatersoorten (zoals de giftige kleine wafelvis) en kamkwallen het uitstekend doen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vooral koudwatervissoorten hebben zwaar te lijden gehad. <\/span>Zo is de populatie grijze garnalen met minstens 78 procent afgenomen. <\/span>De vangsten van zeebaars en schol blijven voorlopig stabiel, terwijl bij andere soorten een opvallende stijging te zien is. <\/span><\/p>\n

De warmste periode in juni-juli sinds het begin van de metingen<\/h4>\n

Begin augustus meldden we al dat West-Europa de warmste juni-juli-periode sinds het begin van de metingen had meegemaakt. In juli deden zich de derde en vierde hittegolf sinds mei voor, wat deze zomer tot een uitzonderlijke reeks van extreme hitte maakte.<\/p>\n

De gemiddelde temperatuur in West-Europa voor juni-juli was met 21,62 \u00b0C de hoogste ooit gemeten, oftewel 2,79 \u00b0C boven het gemiddelde. Hiermee werd het vorige record uit 2022 overtroffen, wat wijst op de uitzonderlijk aanhoudende hitte sinds het begin van de zomer.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
