AirBaltic noemt onvoldoende vraag, in combinatie met financi\u00eble moeilijkheden als gevolg van stijgende brandstofkosten, als reden voor de annulering. Dit is een klap voor de luchthaven van Luik, aangezien er sinds het vertrek van TUIfly in januari geen enkele passagiersvlucht meer was geweest.<\/p>\n<p>Aanvankelijk was AirBaltic van plan om vier keer per week van Luik naar Gran Canaria en Tenerife te vliegen, als onderdeel van een bredere winteruitbreiding met twaalf nieuwe routes in heel Europa.\u00a0Maar eerder deze maand waren er al tekenen dat het niet volgens plan verliep, toen AirBaltic de aangekondigde frequentie plotseling halveerde tot \u00e9\u00e9n vlucht per bestemming per week.<\/p>\n<h4>Van vier naar twee, en uiteindelijk nul vluchten per week<\/h4>\n<p>De reden? Onvoldoende vraag, in combinatie met de financi\u00eble problemen van de luchtvaartmaatschappij als gevolg van stijgende brandstofkosten. Vanwege minder boekingen dan verwacht schrapt AirBaltic deze routes nu volledig. Alle passagiers die al een stoel hadden geboekt, zijn hiervan op de hoogte gesteld en hebben een terugbetaling aangeboden gekregen.<\/p>\n<p>AirBaltic laat weten dat het regelmatig beoordeelt of zijn netwerk commercieel haalbaar is en voldoet aan de vraag van de passagiers. Op basis van een dergelijke analyse zijn ook de rechtstreekse vluchten tussen Luik en de Canarische Eilanden geschrapt.<\/p>\n<h4>De verliezen stapelen zich op<\/h4>\n<p>Het echte probleem beperkt zich zeker niet alleen tot deze kwestie: de Letse luchtvaartmaatschappij kampt ook met bredere financi\u00eble moeilijkheden, en wanneer er bezuinigingsmaatregelen worden doorgevoerd, zijn nieuwe, nog niet beproefde routes simpelweg de eerste die worden geschrapt.<\/p>\n<p>In het eerste kwartaal leed AirBaltic een nettoverlies van 70,1 miljoen euro, ondanks een stijging van de omzet. Bovendien bedragen de totale verliezen sinds 2009 nu meer dan 620 miljoen euro, onder meer als gevolg van hoge leaseverplichtingen.<\/p>\n<p>Het Amerikaanse kredietbeoordelingsbureau Fitch schat het tekort voor de winter van 2026\/27 op 100 tot 150 miljoen euro, ongeveer vijf keer het bedrag van de lening die momenteel ter discussie staat.\u00a0Fitch noemde \u201czeer beperkte financi\u00eble flexibiliteit en acute liquiditeitsdruk\u201d, wat betekent dat het bedrijf binnen zes tot twaalf maanden insolvent zou kunnen worden, tenzij iemand een flinke cheque uitschrijft.<\/p>\n<p>De Letse regering, die 88,37% van de aandelen in bezit heeft, staat daarom voor een cruciale beslissing over de toekomst van de nationale luchtvaartmaatschappij.<\/p>\n<p>Eerder deze maand kondigde AirBaltic dan ook een ingrijpend reorganisatieplan aan om zijn levensvatbaarheid op lange termijn te waarborgen. AirBaltic zal zijn netwerk meer richten op zijn thuisbasis in Riga en zijn vloot van A220-300-vliegtuigen tegen het einde van dit jaar terugbrengen van 54 naar 36. Ook Groningen Airport verliest zijn geplande wekelijkse vlucht naar Tenerife, en de hub van AirBaltic op Tenerife Zuid zal zelfs worden gesloten.<\/p>\n<p>Ook andere routes, zoals Vilnius-Dubai, Tallinn-Londen Gatwick en Vilnius-Berlijn, worden geannuleerd of opgeschort. In Belgi\u00eb blijven de routes Riga-Brussel en Tallinn-Brussel echter in dienst.<\/p>\n<p>Christian Delcourt, woordvoerder van de luchthaven van Luik, noemt het besluit \u201ceen grote teleurstelling\u201d, vooral omdat TUIfly, de enige passagiersluchtvaartmaatschappij, begin januari al was vertrokken.\u00a0De komst van AirBaltic betekende \u201ceen sprankje hoop\u201d en een \u201cinteressante herstart van de passagiersvluchten op onze terminal komende winter, maar nu staan we met lege handen\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De luchthaven van Luik is in de eerste plaats een vrachtluchthaven \u2013 de grootste van Belgi\u00eb. Toch schaadt de annulering door AirBaltic ook de reputatie van de luchthaven: twee opeenvolgende tegenslagen wekken de indruk dat Luik moeite heeft om luchtvaartmaatschappijen aan te trekken of te behouden, wat de markt voor andere luchtvaartmaatschappijen minder aantrekkelijk zou kunnen maken.<\/p>\n<p>Normaal gesproken duurt het meer dan een jaar om nieuwe vluchten op te zetten.
