Melexis, de Belgische ontwerper en ontwikkelaar van chips die voornamelijk bestemd zijn voor autosensoren, heeft een raamovereenkomst (MPA) gesloten met BYD, de grootste fabrikant van elektrische auto\u2019s in China.<\/p>\n

Deze samenwerkingsovereenkomst biedt Melexis meer directe toegang tot de enorme Chinese markt om zijn chips in massaproductie te verkopen, terwijl BYD sneller toegang krijgt tot de gespecialiseerde sensor- en drivertechnologie van Melexis en kan rekenen op nauwere samenwerking bij toekomstige voertuigplatforms.<\/p>\n

Uitbreiding van een bestaande samenwerking<\/h4>\n

Melexis levert al enkele jaren aan BYD, waarschijnlijk voornamelijk via tussenpersonen of Tier-1-leveranciers, maar door de ondertekening van de MPA of raamovereenkomst verschuift de relatie tussen de twee bedrijven naar een directer en strategischer partnerschap, en daarmee naar een samenwerking op langere termijn.<\/p>\n

In plaats van dat de chips van Melexis voornamelijk via andere leveranciers bij BYD terechtkomen, is het beursgenoteerde Belgische bedrijf met hoofdkantoor in Ieper nu een directe leverancier binnen het wereldwijde inkoopnetwerk van BYD.<\/p>\n

De overeenkomst voorziet in directe inkoop- en leveringsprocessen, vermindert de complexiteit van de toeleveringsketen en maakt een nauwere samenwerking mogelijk tussen de engineeringteams van beide bedrijven bij het ontwerp van toekomstige EV-platforms.<\/p>\n

Of, kort samengevat: minder tussenpersonen, snellere en effici\u00ebntere toeleveringsketens, en nauwere samenwerking tussen de engineeringteams van beide bedrijven. Voorheen kwamen veel chips van Melexis indirect bij autofabrikanten terecht via Tier-1-toeleveranciers zoals Bosch, Continental, Valeo, Denso of ZF.<\/p>\n

Er zijn geen gegevens bekendgemaakt over de contractwaarde, het gegarandeerde afnamevolume of een lijst met toekomstige BYD-modellen.<\/p>\n

Wereldtopspeler<\/h4>\n

Melexis, dat vorig jaar een omzet van 839,6 miljoen euro boekte, waarvan 88% afkomstig was uit automobieltoepassingen, produceert geen standaardgeheugenchips, maar onderdelen van het \u201czenuwstelsel\u201d van de auto: gespecialiseerde sensor- en besturingschips.<\/p>\n

Hieronder vallen stroomsensoren, die onmisbaar zijn voor accu\u2019s en elektromotoren om de energiestroom te monitoren; positiesensoren voor besturing, remmen, transmissies en elektromotoren; druk- en temperatuursensoren voor warmtebeheersystemen; en aansturings-IC\u2019s voor motoren en de steeds geavanceerdere voertuigverlichting.<\/p>\n

En terwijl China in razend tempo elektrische auto\u2019s bouwt en een enorme eigen halfgeleiderindustrie heeft opgebouwd, blijft Melexis wereldwijd een van de toonaangevende specialisten op het gebied van mixed-signal-sensoren en besturingschips voor de automobielindustrie.<\/p>\n

BYD zelf is ook opvallend verticaal ge\u00efntegreerd. Haar dochteronderneming BYD Semiconductor ontwikkelt al MCU\u2019s voor auto\u2019s, vermogenshalfgeleiders, elektronica voor batterijbeheer en diverse soorten sensoren.<\/p>\n

Dat maakt de overeenkomst met Melexis bijzonder interessant. BYD wendt zich niet tot een buitenlandse leverancier omdat het zelf geen chips voor de automobielsector kan produceren, maar omdat Melexis beschikt over zeer gespecialiseerde technologie, kwalificaties voor de automobielsector en intellectueel eigendom die zelfs voor een van de meest verticaal ge\u00efntegreerde fabrikanten in de sector aantrekkelijk blijven.<\/p>\n

En om de impact van Melexis in perspectief te plaatsen: het bedrijf geeft momenteel aan dat een nieuwe auto wereldwijd gemiddeld ongeveer 18 Melexis-chips bevat, terwijl in een presentatie voor beleggers uit 2023 een auto uit de BYD Han\/Dynasty-serie werd getoond met ongeveer 26 tot 29 ge\u00efntegreerde schakelingen van Melexis per auto.<\/p>\n

Acht daarvan hadden betrekking op de elektrische aandrijflijn en de omvormer, terwijl de overige werden gebruikt voor het remsysteem, de besturing, kleppen en ventilatoren voor het thermisch beheer, stoelen en deurfuncties.<\/p>\n

Ook de kwaliteitsnormen zijn uiterst streng. Autochips moeten jarenlang betrouwbaar functioneren onder zware temperatuur-, trillings- en elektrische omstandigheden en voldoen aan strenge kwalificatie- en veiligheidseisen.<\/p>\n

Dat is het resultaat van jarenlang ontwikkelingswerk en geeft specialisten zoals Melexis een voorsprong, zelfs nu China zich blijft inspannen om zijn afhankelijkheid van buitenlandse chips te verminderen.<\/p>\n

Sterke marktpositie binnen de Chinese EV-sector<\/h4>\n

Bovendien heeft Melexis de afgelopen jaren een sterke marktpositie opgebouwd binnen de Chinese auto-industrie, wat betekent dat de samenwerking met BYD geenszins een op zichzelf staand succes is.<\/p>\n

Zo koos het premium EV-merk NIO in juni 2024 Melexis als strategische leverancier van stroomsensoren voor de tractieomvormers in al zijn batterij-elektrische modellen. Tijdens een presentatie voor beleggers in 2023 werd een NIO ES6 getoond met maar liefst 57 chips van Melexis.<\/p>\n

Daarnaast maakt Geely gebruik van de slimme RGB-LED-drivers en de MeLiBu-technologie van Melexis voor de verlichting in de Lynk & Co Z10, terwijl Li Auto de 3D-time-of-flight-sensoren van het bedrijf inzet voor gebarenherkenning in het interieur van de Li One en de L-serie. In het investeerdersmateriaal van Melexis worden ook nieuwere spelers, zoals Xiaomi, genoemd als OEM-partners.<\/p>\n

Daardoor was de regio Azi\u00eb-Pacific in 2024 alleen al goed voor ongeveer 60% van de totale omzet van Melexis, waarbij Groot-China bijna de helft van dat regionale aandeel voor zijn rekening nam.<\/p>\n

Samenwerking met lokale partners<\/h4>\n

Melexis heeft ook fors ge\u00efnvesteerd in de regio. In 2025 kondigde het bedrijf een meer gelokaliseerde Chinese toeleveringsketen aan, waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van lokale partners voor de fabricage van wafers en de uitbestede assemblage en het testen van halfgeleiders, met lokale logistieke ondersteuning. In maart van dit jaar richtte het bedrijf een volledige dochteronderneming op in Shanghai.<\/p>\n

Aan Melexis kom je sowieso niet voorbij. Naast Chinese merken omvatten de bekendgemaakte OEM-relaties van het bedrijf vrijwel de gehele traditionele auto-industrie. Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota, Renault, Ford, Honda en vele anderen behoren tot de fabrikanten die banden hebben met het bedrijf.<\/p>\n

Bovendien begint BYD zich te ontwikkelen van een Chinese exporteur naar een Europese fabrikant. De Hongaarse fabriek in Szeged zal naar verwachting in het vierde kwartaal van 2026 beginnen met de productie van de Dolphin Surf, terwijl het bedrijf al mogelijkheden onderzoekt voor een tweede productielocatie in de EU, mogelijk in een bestaande fabriek in Zuid-Europa.<\/p>\n

Er zijn geen aanwijzingen dat de overeenkomst met Melexis specifiek voor de Europese fabrieken van BYD is gesloten. Maar aangezien de MPA van toepassing is op het wereldwijde inkoopsysteem van BYD, zouden chips die in toekomstige platforms worden ge\u00efntegreerd net zo goed in auto\u2019s kunnen worden ingebouwd die in Europa worden geassembleerd als in China.<\/p>\n

Risicovermindering is een tweesnijdend zwaard<\/h4>\n

Maar nu Brussel bedrijven oproept om hun strategische afhankelijkheid van China te verminderen, laat een Belgisch bedrijf dat zijn banden met China aanhaalt ook zien hoe ingewikkeld dat beleid kan worden.<\/p>\n

De \u201cde-risking\u201d-agenda van de EU is in de eerste plaats gericht op het verminderen van kritieke afhankelijkheden en kwetsbaarheden, en niet op het verhinderen dat Europese bedrijven technologie naar China exporteren.<\/p>\n

Tegelijkertijd maakt Europa zich zorgen over de snelle groei van de goedkope Chinese halfgeleiderproductie en de concurrentiedruk die dit op Europese fabrikanten kan uitoefenen.<\/p>\n

Juist bedrijven die zich op het gebied van gespecialiseerde analoge chips, vermogenselektronica en componenten voor de automobielindustrie echt onderscheiden door hun technologie, worden beschouwd als de bedrijven die het best in staat zijn om die concurrentiedruk het hoofd te bieden.<\/p>\n

Een fabless-model<\/h4>\n

En dat is nu juist het marktsegment van Melexis. Melexis werkt grotendeels volgens een fabless-model: het bedrijf ontwerpt zijn chips in eigen beheer, maar doet voor de productie van wafers, de assemblage en het testen een beroep op externe foundries en productiepartners.<\/p>\n

Het bedrijf heeft ook de enorme Chinese markt nodig om die chips in massaproductie te verkopen. Even ter illustratie: BYD verkocht in 2025 4,60 miljoen voertuigen op nieuwe energiebronnen, waaronder ongeveer 2,26 miljoen volledig elektrische auto\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Het risico is echter niet eenzijdig. Hoe meer omzet en capaciteit in de toeleveringsketen Melexis in China concentreert, hoe kwetsbaarder het bedrijf zou kunnen worden voor toekomstige exportbeperkingen, sanctierisico\u2019s of politieke druk.<\/p>\n

Maar ondanks die risico\u2019s laat deze relatie ook zien hoe onderling afhankelijk de wereldwijde auto-industrie nog steeds is.<\/p>\n

Het portfolio van Melexis omvat niet alleen oplossingen voor de automobielsector, maar ook voor de industrie en robotica. En BYD is niet zomaar een autofabrikant.<\/p>\n

Het is een van \u2019s werelds grootste ge\u00efntegreerde technologieconglomeraten, met een enorme omvang op het gebied van accu\u2019s, aandrijftechniek en, in toenemende mate, productieautomatisering en robotica binnen de eigen fabrieken.<\/p>\n
