De gevolgen van de dreigende handelsoorlog tussen de VS en Canada worden nu al zichtbaar. Een topman van Honda verklaarde dat de Japanse autofabrikant wellicht geen achtste assemblagefabriek in Noord-Amerika zal bouwen, tenzij een belangrijke handelsovereenkomst (USMCA) wordt verlengd.<\/p>\n

De regering-Trump onderhandelt momenteel met Canada en Mexico over het lot van de Overeenkomst tussen de Verenigde Staten, Mexico en Canada (USMCA), maar eind vorige week werd er een aanstaande handelsovereenkomst tussen de VS en Canada uitgemond in een heuse handelsoorlog<\/a>, waarbij in alle richtingen absurde exportheffingen worden ingevoerd.<\/p>\n

Geen nieuwe fabriek zonder USMCA<\/h4>\n

Noriya Kaihara, uitvoerend vicevoorzitter van Honda, vertelde verslaggevers tijdens een rondetafelgesprek in Washington dat de autofabrikant in Noord-Amerika bijna zijn volledige productiecapaciteit heeft bereikt en een nieuwe fabriek nodig heeft.<\/p>\n

\u201cAls er in de toekomst echter geen USMCA-overeenkomst komt, zullen we wellicht een andere koers moeten varen\u201d, aldus Kaihara, die eraan toevoegde dat het bedrijf binnen een jaar of twee een besluit zal moeten nemen en graag zou zien dat de fabriek rond 2030 operationeel is.<\/p>\n

Hij zei dat Honda de kosten van de invoerheffingen momenteel niet doorberekent aan kopers in Noord-Amerika. De VS hebben zaterdag invoerheffingen van 50% opgelegd op Canadese producten ter waarde van $20 miljard, en Canada heeft aangekondigd vanaf 8 september tegenmaatregelen te zullen nemen.<\/p>\n

Vorig jaar had Hyundai Motor de regering al laten weten dat de onzekerheid rond de USMCA zijn investeringsbeslissingen vertraagde.<\/p>\n

\u201cEen vroege bevestiging van de verlenging van de USMCA zou onmiddellijk meer dan $20 miljard aan nieuwe Amerikaanse investeringen vrijmaken\u201d, verklaarde de autofabrikant in november. \u201cElke maand van onzekerheid vertraagt het cre\u00ebren van banen, de keuze van vestigingslocaties en de technologische ontwikkeling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Honda gaat voor hybride in de VS<\/h4>\n

Nu de belangstelling voor Honda\u2019s hybride en andere zuinige modellen sterk is toegenomen \u2013 aangezien de olieprijzen sinds het begin van de oorlog tussen de VS en Iran hoog zijn gebleven \u2013 beleefde de autofabrikant zijn beste juli in zeven jaar, met een stijging van de autoverkoop met 36%.<\/p>\n

Honda heeft zijn langetermijndoelstelling voor de verkoop van elektrische auto\u2019s geschrapt<\/a> in mei, waaronder de doelstelling dat elektrische auto\u2019s in 2030 een vijfde van de verkoop van nieuwe auto\u2019s moeten uitmaken. Het bedrijf is nu van plan om tegen 2030 15 nieuwe hybride modellen op de markt te brengen. Of dit op de lange termijn een goede beslissing zal blijken te zijn, valt nog te bezien. De Japanse autofabrikant heeft zijn EV-project in Canada voor onbepaalde tijd opgeschort; het ging om een investeringsplan van $11 miljard voor de productie van elektrische auto\u2019s en accu\u2019s. Daarnaast heeft het bedrijf drie geplande EV-modellen voor de Amerikaanse markt geschrapt.
