Het prototype op waterstof heeft voor het eerst op eigen kracht gereden en rondjes afgelegd in het Eastech Park in Leuven. Daarmee lijkt het de eerste werkende racewagen in Belgi\u00eb te zijn die wordt aangedreven door een waterstofverbrandingsmotor.<\/p>\n<p>De auto combineert een Radical-racechassis met een aangepaste 3,5-liter Ford EcoBoost V6-motor. Een jaar geleden was HydroTeam er al in geslaagd om de motor op waterstof te laten draaien, maar alleen met een externe brandstoftoevoer.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-192712\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hydroteam-reveal-blog_6c0c164bd2b597ee32b68b8b5755bd2e.jpeg?resize=640%2C853&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>De nieuwste versie omvat het volledige systeem aan boord, inclusief waterstofopslag, drukregeling, elektronica, koeling en de aandrijflijn.<\/p>\n<p>Waterstof wordt opgeslagen bij een druk van 700 bar en teruggebracht tot ongeveer 5 bar voordat het de motor bereikt. V\u00f3\u00f3r de installatie werd het systeem eerst getest met stikstof en vervolgens onderworpen aan een druktest tot 875 bar in een gespecialiseerde bunker bij het staalonderzoekscentrum OCAS. Inspectiebedrijf Vin\u00e7otte heeft de installatie vervolgens goedgekeurd.<\/p>\n<p>Dat maakt deze prestatie aanzienlijk betekenisvoller dan alleen maar een motor aan de praat krijgen. Acht voltijdstudenten, ondersteund door tientallen deeltijdse teamleden, hebben een bestaande racewagen in feite omgebouwd tot een mobiel waterstoflaboratorium. HydroTeam wil bovendien dat het project uitgroeit tot een breder onderzoeksplatform aan de KU Leuven.<\/p>\n<h4>Niet helemaal een wereldprimeur<\/h4>\n<p>Er is echter een kanttekening bij een van de beweringen rond het project. In berichten werd HydroTeam omschreven als het eerste studententeam ter wereld dat een raceauto op waterstof aan de praat kreeg. Dat lijkt wat te ruim geformuleerd.<\/p>\n<p>Het KA-RaceIng-team van het Karlsruhe Institute of Technology heeft zijn KIT25h-Formula Student-auto op waterstof al in 2025 ingezet. Het team won de categorie \u2018verbranding\u2019 bij Formula Future en nam vervolgens deel aan Formula Student Austria, waar het met de waterstofauto meedeed aan de dynamische disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>Het Leuvense project lijkt nog steeds het predicaat \u2018eerste in Belgi\u00eb\u2019 te verdienen, en de omvang en ambitie ervan zijn uitzonderlijk. HydroTeam richt zich niet alleen op de Formula Student-wedstrijd. Het wil een opvolger in GT-stijl ontwikkelen, offici\u00eble rondetijden neerzetten op Spa-Francorchamps, in augustus 2027 aan een eerste race deelnemen en uiteindelijk in 2030 meedoen aan Le Mans.<\/p>\n<h4>Toyota en Alpine liggen enkele ronden voor<\/h4>\n<p>Met die laatste doelstelling moet het studentenproject de concurrentie aangaan met veel verder ontwikkelde waterstofprogramma\u2019s. De JS2 RH2 van Bosch en Ligier levert met zijn 3,0-liter twin-turbo waterstofmotor al 443 kW, oftewel ongeveer 602 pk, en 650 Nm. Het voertuig heeft herhaaldelijk snelheden van meer dan 280 km\/u gehaald en meer dan 5.000 kilometer aan zware circuitproeven afgelegd.<\/p>\n<p>Alpine is nog een stap verder gegaan. De Alpenglow Hy6 maakt gebruik van een speciaal ontwikkelde 3,5-liter V6-motor met dubbele turbo die op waterstof loopt en een vermogen van 544 kW (740 pk) en een koppel van 770 Nm levert. Met waterstof opgeslagen bij een druk van 700 bar haalt hij een topsnelheid van meer dan 330 km\/u.<\/p>\n<p>En Toyota werkt al aan de volgende stap. In juni, tijdens Le Mans, werd de TR LH2 Racing Prototype het eerste prototype met een verbrandingsmotor op vloeibare waterstof dat in het openbaar op het Circuit de la Sarthe reed.<\/p>\n<h4>Le Mans zet de spelregels op zijn kop<\/h4>\n<p>Daar ligt wellicht uiteindelijk de grootste technische uitdaging voor HydroTeam. De FIA heeft vloeibare waterstof gekozen voor de toekomstige waterstofprototypes van Le Mans, maar staat zowel aandrijfsystemen met brandstofcellen als met waterstofverbranding toe.<\/p>\n<p>Vloeibare waterstof biedt een hogere volumetrische energiedichtheid dan gecomprimeerde gasvormige waterstof, maar vereist cryogene tanks bij -253 \u00b0C en een geheel andere opslagstructuur en tankinfrastructuur.<\/p>\n<p>Ook de timing is in het voordeel van HydroTeam veranderd. Aanvankelijk was een aparte waterstofklasse gepland voor 2028, maar de FIA en het WEC geven nu aan dat waterstof in 2030 zal worden ge\u00efntroduceerd \u2013 precies het jaar waarin de studenten uit Leuven hopen mee te doen. Het huidige prototype op basis van de Radical moet dus niet worden gezien als de auto waarmee uiteindelijk op Le Mans zal worden geracet. Het is de eerste stap in een reeks leerprojecten.<\/p>\n<p>Een nieuwe lichting van dertien studenten heeft het stokje nu overgenomen. Op 9 september staan er demonstratieronden gepland op het Bugatti-circuit in Le Mans en later dit jaar gaat de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe waterstofracer in GT-stijl van start.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KU Leuven\u2019s HydroTeam has reached an important milestone on its road to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
