Toen BYD eerder dit jaar zijn kleine Racco voor de Japanse markt onthulde, leek dat een zeer specifiek antwoord op de bijzondere regels van de Japanse kei-car-markt. Zes maanden later wordt duidelijk dat een deel van die technologie ook bepalend zou kunnen zijn voor BYD\u2019s volgende generatie kleine, betaalbare elektrische auto\u2019s voor Europa.<\/p>\n

Volgens berichten uit Japan wil BYD de compacte X-PACK-architectuur van Racco wereldwijd op de markt brengen, ook in Europa. Dat zou de Chinese fabrikant uiteindelijk een nieuw troefkaart kunnen opleveren in de opkomende strijd om elektrische stadsauto\u2019s in de prijsklasse van 20.000 euro.<\/p>\n

De Twingo E-Tech van Renault is al op de markt; Volkswagen bereidt voor 2027 een even betaalbare opvolger van de Up voor, naar verluidt ID genoemd. Omhoog<\/a>, terwijl Smart de ultracompacte tweezitter nieuw leven inblaast met zijn nieuwe #2.<\/p>\n

In februari, Newmobility.news beschreef<\/a> de 3,4 meter lange Racco is meer dan alleen een poging van BYD om door te breken op de streng afgeschermde Japanse kei-car-markt.<\/p>\n

De ongewoon effici\u00ebnte constructie zou ook kunnen dienen als testplatform voor het soort kleine, betaalbare elektrische auto\u2019s dat Europese fabrikanten momenteel in hoog tempo proberen te ontwikkelen.<\/p>\n

Volgens het Japanse Nikkei, zoals gemeld door CnEVPost, heeft de Chinese fabrikant besloten om de zogenaamde X-PACK-technologie, die voor de Racco is ontwikkeld, toe te passen in toekomstige compacte elektrische auto\u2019s voor Europa, Zuidoost-Azi\u00eb en Zuid-Amerika. Naar verluidt gaan de gedetailleerde ontwikkelingswerkzaamheden nu van start, hoewel het nog enkele jaren zal duren voordat de auto\u2019s op de markt komen.<\/p>\n

Slim inpakken<\/h3>\n

X-PACK klinkt als iets dat je bij Amazon zou bestellen, maar het lost een van de hardnekkigste problemen van een kleine elektrische auto op: waar laat je alles?<\/p>\n

In plaats van de neus vol te proppen met een omvormer en diverse hoogspanningselektronica, integreert BYD een aantal van die onderdelen in het accusysteem onder de vloer. Daardoor blijft er meer ruimte over voor passagiers en, nog belangrijker, meer ruimte aan de voorkant om botsingsenergie op te vangen.<\/p>\n

Bij een gewone gezins-SUV halen een paar centimeter hier of daar nauwelijks het nieuws. Bij een Japanse kei-auto, die wettelijk beperkt is tot 3,40 meter lengte en 1,48 meter breedte, zijn ze van onschatbare waarde.<\/p>\n

De productieversie van de Racco is op 28 juli in Japan op de markt gebracht voor 2,145 miljoen yen, wat neerkomt op ongeveer 12.500 euro v\u00f3\u00f3r Europese belastingen en heffingen. De basisversie combineert een accu van 22,4 kWh met een actieradius van 210 km volgens de Japanse WLTC-norm, terwijl de versies met een accu van 35,84 kWh die actieradius uitbreiden tot 320 km. BYD noemt het de eerste elektrische kei-auto die de grens van 300 km overschrijdt.<\/p>\n

En Japanse kopers lijken ge\u00efntrigeerd. BYD ontving in de eerste twee weken 1.002 bestellingen, waarbij minstens 80% voor de duurdere 300 Premium kozen. Klein betekent blijkbaar niet per se dat het een uitgeklede versie is.<\/p>\n

Een nieuw probleem voor de kleine elektrische auto\u2019s in Europa?<\/h3>\n

De introductie van de X-PACK in Europa zou wel eens een interessant nieuw front kunnen cre\u00ebren in de strijd om betaalbare elektrische auto\u2019s. Renault heeft zijn nieuwe elektrische Twingo E-Tech van 3,79 meter al in Belgi\u00eb te koop vanaf \u20ac 19.500, met een accu van 27,5 kWh en een actieradius tot 263 km.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen bereidt voor 2027 een even betaalbare elektrische opvolger van de Up voor, die naar verwachting ongeveer \u20ac 20.000 zal kosten en naar verluidt de bekende naam nieuw leven zal inblazen als ID. Up.<\/p>\n

En dan is er nog Smart. De binnenkort te verschijnen #2 is qua concept misschien wel de Europese concurrent die het dichtst in de buurt komt van een op de Racco gebaseerde BYD. De opvolger van de fortwo blijft een ultracompacte tweezitter, maar maakt nu gebruik van een nieuw ontwikkeld, speciaal voor elektrische auto\u2019s ontworpen ECA-platform.<\/p>\n

Smart zal de productieversie op 12 oktober op de Autosalon van Parijs onthullen; de verkoop in Europa staat gepland voor 2027. De prijzen, de accucapaciteit en de actieradius zijn nog niet bekendgemaakt.<\/p>\n

BYD klopt zelf al aan dezelfde deur met de grotere Dolphin Surf. Die is momenteel in Belgi\u00eb verkrijgbaar vanaf een catalogusprijs van \u20ac 21.440 en heeft een actieradius tot 322 km volgens de WLTP-norm.<\/p>\n

Een op de Racco ge\u00efnspireerde Europese BYD, die onder de Dolphin Surf wordt gepositioneerd, zou daardoor op een verrassend drukke markt terecht kunnen komen. Aan de ene kant staan relatief conventionele kleine hatchbacks zoals de Twingo en het toekomstige instapmodel van Volkswagen, en aan de andere kant de meer gespecialiseerde, waarschijnlijk luxere Smart #2.<\/p>\n

BYD zou \u00e9\u00e9n belangrijk voordeel kunnen hebben. Het bedrijf heeft de volledige zeggenschap over zijn eigen Blade-accu\u2019s, een groot deel van de elektronica en de elektrische aandrijflijnen, terwijl X-PACK met minder meters en mogelijk minder onderdelen een auto met een grotere bruikbare ruimte zou kunnen realiseren.<\/p>\n

Als dat resulteert in een Europese elektrische auto die daadwerkelijk minder dan 20.000 euro kost, is de grootste bijdrage van de Racco misschien helemaal niet zijn kei-car-afmetingen, maar juist de druk die hij op Europese concurrenten uitoefent om kleine elektrische auto\u2019s weer winstgevend te maken.<\/p>\n
