Op 23 juli registreerde Flightradar24 wereldwijd 153.359 commerci\u00eble vluchten binnen 24 uur \u2013 de drukste dag ooit, ruim boven het vorige record uit 2023.<\/p>\n

Dat cijfer \u2013 16.134 vluchten meer dan het oude record \u2013 zet ook de toon voor de hele maand juli, aangezien de wereldwijde vraag naar vliegreizen die maand met 0,2% steeg ten opzichte van juli 2025, waarmee het hoogste niveau aan inkomsten per passagierskilometer (RPK) werd bereikt dat ooit in een maand juli is geregistreerd.<\/p>\n

Veerkrachtig herstel<\/h4>\n

De cijfers zijn opmerkelijk, onder meer gezien de hoge ticketprijzen als gevolg van de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten. De lichte stijging van 0,21 TP3T is ook belangrijk omdat deze een keerpunt markeert: het wereldwijde luchtverkeer stabiliseerde zich in juli, na drie maanden van daling als gevolg van de oorlog in Iran en de blokkade van de Straat van Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Daardoor blijft het absolute aantal reizigers wereldwijd op een historisch hoog niveau staan, en volgens de International Air Transport Association (IATA) \u2013 die de cijfers heeft gepubliceerd en 378 luchtvaartmaatschappijen als lid telt \u2013 houdt het goede nieuws daar niet op: augustus belooft nog beter te worden.<\/p>\n

Het record voor het passagiersverkeer in \u00e9\u00e9n maand werd vorig jaar in augustus gevestigd. Maar de kans is groot dat ook dat record wordt verbroken, aangezien er deze augustus meer vluchten waren, met een verwachte stijging van 1,9%.<\/p>\n

Mogelijk recordaantal passagiers in 2026<\/h4>\n

Ondanks hogere brandstofkosten, verstoringen in het luchtruim en langere omleidingsroutes als gevolg van het conflict blijft de reislust groot. Er zijn echter regionale verschillen.<\/p>\n

Zo daalde het reisvolume van luchtvaartmaatschappijen uit het Midden-Oosten in juli verder (-10% ten opzichte van dezelfde maand vorig jaar), terwijl de regio Azi\u00eb-Pacific na twee zwakkere maanden weer groei liet zien. Het herstel van de Chinese binnenlandse markt was de drijvende kracht achter de groei van het binnenlands luchtverkeer. Noord-Amerika bleef echter enigszins achter.<\/p>\n

Daardoor kwamen luchtvaartmaatschappijen uit Latijns-Amerika (+6,1%), Afrika (+5,2%), Europa (+3,1%) en de regio Azi\u00eb-Pacific (+1,0%) als winnaars uit de bus tijdens dit hoogseizoen.<\/p>\n

De IATA verwacht dat luchtvaartmaatschappijen in 2026 ongeveer 5,2 miljard passagiers zullen vervoeren \u2013 een record voor een volledig jaar. De verwachte nettowinst van de sector bedraagt ongeveer $41 miljard. Volgens de IATA reizen 58% van de toeristen die een landsgrens overschrijden per vliegtuig.<\/p>\n

En hoe zit het dan met de klimaatverandering?<\/h4>\n

Deze ongebreidelde groei \u2013 IATA-leden voorspellen voor september een capaciteitsstijging van 2,9% ten opzichte van dezelfde maand in 2025 \u2013 roept echter wel ernstige vragen op over de verantwoordelijkheid van de sector voor klimaatverandering en de betrokkenheid van reizigers bij dit vraagstuk.<\/p>\n

\u201cDe groei van de luchtvaartsector, en met name van vluchten met een hoge uitstoot, is niet verenigbaar met wat de planeet nodig heeft\u201d, schrijft de in Brussel gevestigde denktank Transport & Environment naar aanleiding van een uitzonderlijk hete en droge zomer in Europa.<\/p>\n

De bedrijven reageren met een eenvoudig argument: ze zouden graag duurzame brandstoffen uit niet-fossiele bronnen gebruiken, maar die SAF\u2019s zijn simpelweg niet op de markt verkrijgbaar.<\/p>\n

Hoewel ze dit ook als een soort schild gebruiken, wordt de verantwoordelijkheid hiermee buiten de sector gelegd. De sector zelf blijft daarentegen het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen opvoeren, streeft naar maximale winst en overweegt geen enkele vrijwillige productievermindering om zijn klimaatimpact te beperken.<\/p>\n

Zelfs als er meer SAF\u2019s beschikbaar zouden zijn, zouden luchtvaartmaatschappijen aanzienlijk meer moeten betalen, wat in strijd is met de strikte kostendiscipline die zij momenteel hanteren om hun aandeelhouders tevreden te houden.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
