De volgende generatie van de iX5 Hydrogen wordt momenteel in de praktijk getest, terwijl tegelijkertijd de assemblage van prototypes, de industrialisatie bij toeleveranciers en de productievoorbereidingen op gang zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Technisch gezien laat BMW steeds vaker zien dat een personenauto op waterstof kan werken. De moeilijkere vraag voor 2026 is of er in 2028, wanneer de serieproductie van start gaat, nog genoeg klanten zullen zijn die er een willen \u2013 en waar ze die dan gaan tanken.<\/p>\n<p>De toekomstige X5 op waterstof zal gebruikmaken van het brandstofcelsysteem van de derde generatie van BMW, dat samen met Toyota is ontwikkeld.<\/p>\n<p>BMW claimt een WLTP-actieradius van ongeveer 750 kilometer, het tanken van waterstof in minder dan vijf minuten en prestaties die vergelijkbaar zijn met die van een conventionele premium-SUV.<\/p>\n<p>Vooral de nieuwste tankconstructie is van groot belang. In plaats van de omvangrijke cilindrische opstelling die in eerdere prototypes werd gebruikt, heeft BMW een veel plattere waterstofopslagsysteem ontwikkeld dat minstens 7 kg waterstof kan bevatten.<\/p>\n<p>Dat maakt het eenvoudiger om waterstof te integreren naast batterij-elektrische, plug-in hybride, benzine- en dieselaandrijvingen binnen dezelfde voertuigarchitectuur.<\/p>\n<p>BMW gaat ook verder dan alleen laboratoriumwerk. In de fabriek voor aandrijflijnen in Steyr, Oostenrijk, wordt productieapparatuur ge\u00efnstalleerd, in M\u00fcnchen worden prototypes samengesteld en medewerkers worden nu al opgeleid voor de toekomstige serieproductie.<\/p>\n<h4>Een gok van 273 miljoen euro op waterstof<\/h4>\n<p>De inzet van het bedrijfsleven is aanzienlijk, evenals de overheidssteun die hierachter schuilgaat. BMW meldt dat de Duitse bondsregering in het kader van het Europese IPCEI Hy2Move-programma 191 miljoen euro beschikbaar stelt voor de ontwikkeling van aandrijflijn- en tanktechnologie\u00ebn, terwijl Beieren nog eens 82 miljoen euro bijdraagt.<\/p>\n<p>Dat maakt de iX5 Hydrogen zowel een technologisch experiment als een experiment op het gebied van overheidsbeleid ter waarde van 273 miljoen euro.<\/p>\n<p>De timing is opvallend. Terwijl BMW een waterstofauto voorbereidt voor het einde van dit decennium, is de Europese markt voor brandstofcelauto\u2019s vrijwel verdwenen.<\/p>\n<h4>Wereldwijd zijn er 4.643 voertuigen met waterstofbrandstofcellen verkocht<\/h4>\n<p>Volgens SNE Research werden er in de eerste helft van 2026 wereldwijd slechts 4.643 voertuigen met waterstofbrandstofcellen verkocht. Hyundai was met 3.337 exemplaren veruit de grootste verkoper, terwijl Toyota er slechts 306 verkocht en Honda 79.<\/p>\n<p>In Europa werden in dezelfde periode slechts 14 voertuigen met brandstofcellen geregistreerd. Ter vergelijking: het aantal registraties van volledig elektrische auto\u2019s in de EU bedroeg meer dan 1,2 miljoen.<\/p>\n<p>Ook op het gebied van de infrastructuur ziet het er nauwelijks rooskleuriger uit. H2 Mobility, de exploitant van het grootste waterstofvulnetwerk van Duitsland, heeft kleinere 700-bar-tankstations gesloten en richt zijn investeringen nu op locaties waar bussen en bedrijfsvoertuigen kunnen tanken.<\/p>\n<p>Dat leidt tot een lastige tegenstrijdigheid: BMW brengt een premium personenauto met een druk van 700 bar in productie, terwijl het meest ontwikkelde waterstoftanknetwerk van Europa zich steeds meer richt op het zware vervoer.<\/p>\n<h4>Een steeds kleiner wordende groep gelovigen<\/h4>\n<p>Maar BMW staat niet helemaal alleen. Toyota blijft zijn naaste technologische partner en blijft naast commerci\u00eble toepassingen ook waterstofauto\u2019s ontwikkelen.<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai is misschien wel de grootste voorstander hiervan: de Nexo van de tweede generatie heeft een WLTP-actieradius van meer dan 800 km en kan in ongeveer vijf minuten worden opgeladen.<\/p>\n<p>Ook Honda is nog steeds actief op dit gebied, maar gaat wat voorzichtiger te werk. De CR-V e:FCEV van het merk combineert waterstof met een oplaadbare accu, terwijl het bedrijf werkt aan de ontwikkeling van goedkopere brandstofceltechnologie van de volgende generatie.<\/p>\n<p>Tegelijkertijd heeft Honda een deel van zijn investeringen in waterstof al teruggeschroefd, omdat de marktverwachtingen zijn afgenomen.<\/p>\n<p>Anderen hebben veel hardere conclusies getrokken. Stellantis heeft zijn ontwikkelingsprogramma voor brandstofcellen in 2025 stopgezet, met het argument dat waterstof geen geloofwaardig traject bood naar economische duurzaamheid op middellange termijn.<\/p>\n<p>General Motors heeft vervolgens de ontwikkeling van zijn Hydrotec-brandstofcellen van de volgende generatie stopgezet en zijn middelen verlegd naar accu\u2019s en oplaadtechnologie.<\/p>\n<h4>Inzetten op een optie, niet op een revolutie<\/h4>\n<p>Het fundamentele nadeel van waterstof ten opzichte van batterijen is nog niet verdwenen. Het produceren van groene waterstof via elektrolyse, het comprimeren en vervoeren ervan, het weer omzetten in elektriciteit in een brandstofcel en ten slotte het aandrijven van een elektromotor vereist aanzienlijk meer hernieuwbare elektriciteit dan het rechtstreeks opladen van een batterij.<\/p>\n<p>Groene waterstof zelf blijft ook schaars en duur. De strategie van BMW kan daarom wellicht beter worden gezien, niet als een gok dat waterstof batterijen zal vervangen, maar als een gok op een toekomstige waterstofeconomie.<\/p>\n<p>De flexibele voertuigarchitectuur beperkt het risico; Toyota draagt een deel van de ontwikkelingslast, en overheidsfinanciering dekt een ander deel van de kosten.<\/p>\n<h4>Infrastructuur voor vrachtwagens<\/h4>\n<p>Het belangrijkste is dat de waterstofinfrastructuur voor vrachtwagens, bussen, de scheepvaart en de industrie nog aanzienlijk kan groeien. Volgens de EU-regelgeving moeten er tegen 2030 waterstofvulstations komen langs het TEN-T-kernwegennet.<\/p>\n<p>Als dat netwerk zich toch ontwikkelt voor zwaar vervoer, zouden personenauto\u2019s zoals de BMW X5 daar ook gebruik van kunnen maken. Dat zou waterstof een kleine rol kunnen geven voor bestuurders die een groot bereik nodig hebben, snel willen tanken of vaak een aanhanger trekken.<\/p>\n<p>Maar dat is iets heel anders dan uitgroeien tot een derde gangbare aandrijflijn voor personenauto\u2019s, naast accu\u2019s en verbrandingsmotoren.<\/p>\n<p>BMW heeft steeds vaker aangetoond dat een X5 op waterstof kan werken. Tegen 2028 zal het iets veel moeilijkers moeten bewijzen: dat er nog steeds genoeg mensen zijn die er een willen kopen.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BMW is moving its hydrogen program another step closer to series production.
