Nauwelijks een week nadat Volvo had bevestigd dat het model in de VS uit de productie zou worden gehaald, heeft het merk een facelift aangekondigd voor de EX40, zijn oudste elektrische model. Deze bescheiden update omvat een nieuw ontwerp, meer vermogen en een warmtepomp als standaarduitrusting.<\/p>\n

De EX40 zag in 2019 het levenslicht als de XC40 Recharge en was daarmee een van de eerste elektrische SUV\u2019s voor de massamarkt van een Europees premiummerk. Zijn opvolger, de naar verluidt EX50, wordt eind 2027 verwacht. De huidige versie, die in de fabriek in Gent wordt geproduceerd, krijgt een update om de periode tot aan die lancering te overbruggen.<\/p>\n

Nieuwe namen<\/h4>\n

Met de vernieuwde EX40 introduceert Volvo een nieuwe naamgevingsstrategie die aansluit bij de kleinere Ex30. De varianten heten P5 Electric, P5 Long Range en P8 Performance AWD. De instapversie met achterwielaandrijving is in Belgi\u00eb nu verkrijgbaar vanaf \u20ac 48.750, maakt gebruik van een 70 kWh-accu en haalt volgens de WLTP-cyclus een actieradius van maximaal 477 kilometer \u2013 tien kilometer meer dan voorheen dankzij effici\u00ebntere motoren.
\nDe Long Range-versie behoudt zijn accu van 82 kWh en zijn maximale actieradius van 576 kilometer, terwijl het vlaggenschip, de P8 Performance AWD met dubbele motor, nu 325 kW (442 pk) levert, een stijging ten opzichte van 300 kW.<\/p>\n

Alle uitvoeringen zijn standaard uitgerust met een warmtepomp voor een lager brandstofverbruik, een nieuw ontwerp voor de Thor Hammer-koplampen (altijd met Matrix LED-technologie) en een groter centraal touchscreen van 11,2 inch met Google Gemini-integratie.<\/p>\n

Volvo heeft ook de veiligheidsuitrusting verbeterd, hoewel er geen echte innovaties zijn toegevoegd. Dankzij een uitgebreide reeks sensoren wordt er een waarschuwing gegeven wanneer een deur wordt geopend in de buurt van fietsers, en bij noodremmingen ondersteunt een automatische stuurbekrachtiging het manoeuvreren indien nodig. Volvo geeft aan dat de productie in november van start gaat en dat de eerste leveringen tegen het einde van 2026 worden verwacht.<\/p>\n

Toekomstplannen<\/h4>\n

Voor Belgi\u00eb heeft de facelift van de EX40 een betekenis die veel verder reikt dan het product zelf. Het model wordt gebouwd in de Volvo-fabriek in Gent, waar ook de V60 en EX30 worden geproduceerd. De 40-serie blijft wereldwijd de op \u00e9\u00e9n na best verkochte modellijn van Volvo, maar de opvolger zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk worden overgeheveld naar de nieuwe Volvo-fabriek in Ko\u0161ice, Slowakije. Voor Gent vormt het model het grootste productievolume.<\/p>\n

De definitieve bevestiging van de producttoewijzingen wordt deze donderdag verwacht, wanneer Volvo tijdens een live-evenement in Stockholm zijn nieuwste bedrijfsstrategie onthult. Dit zou ook belangrijk nieuws moeten opleveren over de toekomst van de fabriek in Gent. Naar verwachting zal het merk twee nieuwe modellen onthullen.<\/p>\n

Ondertussen is de EX40, samen met de coup\u00e9-variant EC40 en het instapmodel EX30, uit de Amerikaanse markt gehaald. Amerikaanse dealers zullen tot medio 2027 alleen nog de resterende voorraad verkopen; daarna wordt de EX60 de facto het instapmodel onder de elektrische auto\u2019s van Volvo.
