De locatie wordt geopend in het zogenaamde NextGen District, het innovatiecentrum van de haven van Antwerpen-Brugge op het terrein van de voormalige Opel-fabriek.<\/p>\n<p>Het doel is om jaarlijks 50 ton groene waterstof te produceren. Het bedrijf begint bewust op kleine schaal, zodat het geleidelijk kan groeien en kan aantonen dat de technologie werkt.<\/p>\n<p>Het nieuws is opmerkelijk omdat Plug Power \u2013 eveneens een Amerikaans bedrijf \u2013 onlangs zijn plannen voor een waterstoffabriek op diezelfde locatie heeft geschrapt. Deze locatie is ingericht als een soort testomgeving voor projecten op het gebied van energietransitie en circulaire economie binnen de haven van Antwerpen-Brugge. Het bedrijf wil zich profileren als een Europese <a href=\"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/08\/17\/belgium-builds-hydrogen-highway-but-customers-dont-bite\/\">importknooppunt<\/a> voor groene waterstof.<\/p>\n<h4>$1 tot $2 per kilogram waterstof<\/h4>\n<p>Power to Hydrogen (P2H2), een bedrijf dat tot nu toe ongeveer 23 miljoen dollar heeft opgehaald bij investeerders, waaronder het Vlaamse investeringsfonds Finindus, wil de overgang naar een groene waterstofeconomie versnellen met behulp van AEM-elektrolyse (Anion Exchange Membrane).<\/p>\n<p>Verwacht wordt dat deze aanpak de kosten van de productie van groene waterstof aanzienlijk zal verlagen, juist omdat hierdoor flexibel kan worden geschakeld tussen elektrolyse en energieopslag.<\/p>\n<p>Concreet maakt P2H2 gebruik van een AEM-elektrolyse-installatie, in plaats van een AEL- of PEM-elektrolyse-installatie, die met goedkopere materialen werkt en kan worden uitgeschakeld wanneer de elektriciteit duur is \u2013 waardoor het systeem flexibel kan worden ingezet, afhankelijk van de energieprijzen.<\/p>\n<p>Het systeem heeft een vermogen van 500 kilowatt. Het doel is om de totale kosten van waterstof terug te brengen tot $1 tot $2 per kilogram, waardoor waterstof een haalbaar alternatief voor fossiele brandstoffen zou worden.<\/p>\n<h4>Met behulp van ruimtevaarttechnologie<\/h4>\n<p>Het opmerkelijke aan deze technologie is haar oorsprong: NASA en\u2026 de maan. Met steun van NASA heeft Power to Hydrogen omkeerbare brandstofceltechnologie getest en ontwikkeld, met als doel zonne-energie op de maan op een economische manier op te vangen en op te slaan als waterstof, voor gebruik tijdens de twee weken durende maannachten wanneer er geen zonlicht is.<\/p>\n<p>Een apparaat met deze technologie kan in twee richtingen werken. In de \u201cvoorwaartse\u201d richting (elektrolyse) zet het water en elektriciteit om in waterstof en zuurstof \u2013 hetzelfde proces als bij een elektrolyse-installatie.<\/p>\n<p>In de \u201comgekeerde\u201d richting werkt het als een brandstofcel: het voegt de waterstof en zuurstof weer samen om elektriciteit en water te produceren.<\/p>\n<h4>Kostenreductie<\/h4>\n<p>Diezelfde technologie wordt nu ook ingezet voor toepassingen op het vasteland, bijvoorbeeld in Antwerpen: de productie, opslag en het gebruik van waterstof als koolstofvrije energiebron.<\/p>\n<p>Hun AEM-technologie is echter een hybride vloeibare alkalische\/membraanelektrolyse-eenheid. Het grote voordeel: door gebruik te maken van goedkope, in overvloed aanwezige materialen zoals roestvrij staal en nikkel \u2013 in plaats van dure metalen zoals iridium, titanium, platina en goud \u2013 kunnen ze de kosten van een elektrolysestapel met ongeveer 65% verlagen.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-194050 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/6a74c06095d896a83d40f28e_Antwerp_AEM_Electrolyser_System.png?resize=640%2C378&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/6a74c06095d896a83d40f28e_Antwerp_AEM_Electrolyser_System.png?resize=1024%2C605&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/6a74c06095d896a83d40f28e_Antwerp_AEM_Electrolyser_System.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Eerste klant<\/h4>\n<p>Het succes in Antwerpen heeft blijkbaar al tot vervolgopdrachten geleid \u2013 er zijn plannen voor een tweede industrieel systeem in Noorwegen, in samenwerking met het Noorse onderzoeksinstituut SINTEF.<\/p>\n<p>En P2H2 heeft in Antwerpen al zijn eerste klant binnengehaald: het Nederlandse bedrijf Holthausen. Daarnaast wil het bedrijf \u2013 dat bewust de aanpak \u201ceerst op kleine schaal bewijzen, daarna opschalen\u201d volgt \u2013 ook de Haven van Antwerpen zelf als klant binnenhalen.<\/p>\n<h4>Kleine schaal, grote impuls<\/h4>\n<p>Voor de Haven van Antwerpen-Brugge is de komst van het Amerikaanse deeptech-bedrijf \u2013 na de tegenslag met Power Plug \u2013 zeker een opsteker.<\/p>\n<p>De komst van Plug Power \u2013 zij het met een heel ander, groter en uiteindelijk mislukt project \u2013 had Antwerpen binnen de sector al een zekere reputatie als \u201cwaterstofhaven\u201d bezorgd. En dat speelde ongetwijfeld een rol bij de beslissing van een ander Amerikaans bedrijf om dezelfde keuze te maken \u2013 ook al is de aanpak van P2H2 nu veel voorzichtiger.<\/p>\n<p>Maar ook een aantal van de eigen investeerders van P2H2 zijn Europese en internationale energiebedrijven, zoals E.ON, EDP, ESP en American Electric Power, die samenwerken in het innovatieprogramma \u2019Free Electrons\u2019 voor nutsbedrijven.<\/p>\n<h4>Medefinanciering door de haven<\/h4>\n<p>Deze partijen waren zelf op zoek naar een locatie om deze technologie te testen, en de Haven van Antwerpen \u2013 immers het hart van het grootste ge\u00efntegreerde petrochemische cluster van Europa \u2013 bood precies die omgeving: een proeftuin met een lage toetredingsdrempel, kortlopende concessies en medefinanciering door de haven.<\/p>\n<p>Als alles volgens plan verloopt, streeft Power to Hydrogen ernaar om de productie tegen begin 2028 te vertienvoudigen tot 500 ton per jaar.
