De Vlaamse minister van Mobiliteit, Annick De Ridder (NV-A), heeft de eerste veiligheidscijfers bekendgemaakt over drie maanden gebruik van het FSD-systeem (Full Self-Driving) van Tesla op de Belgische wegen. De bemoedigende resultaten laten slechts vijf kleine incidenten zien. Tegelijkertijd beleefde FSD in de VS zijn dodelijkste maand ooit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sinds juni mogen eigenaars van Tesla\u2019s die zijn uitgerust met FSD de zelfrijdende functie in Vlaanderen gebruiken. Deze goedkeuring heeft al interessante gegevens opgeleverd: volgens cijfers van minister van Mobiliteit Annick De Ridder hebben deze auto\u2019s ongeveer 24,6 miljoen kilometer afgelegd.<\/p>\n

Kleine schram<\/h4>\n

Tussen 11 juni en 31 augustus werden slechts vijf incidenten geregistreerd, waarvan er slechts \u00e9\u00e9n formeel moest worden gemeld: een lichte schram, waarbij de bestuurder naar verluidt kort voor de botsing de automatische piloot had uitgeschakeld.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De overige vier waren wat de minister omschreef als \u201czeer lichte ongevallen\u201d, zoals een fietsstuur dat tegen een deur schuurde. Geen van deze ongevallen moest wettelijk worden gemeld, en bij de meeste waren derden betrokken.<\/p>\n

Ter vergelijking: niet-zelfrijdende Tesla\u2019s legden in dezelfde periode 147 miljoen kilometer af en waren betrokken bij 150 meldingsplichtige aanrijdingen. De Ridder concludeerde dat zelfrijdende Tesla\u2019s buiten de snelwegen een bijna tien keer lager ongevalsrisico hadden, terwijl die daling op de snelwegen ongeveer 30% bedroeg.<\/p>\n

Offici\u00eble stemming<\/h4>\n

Deze eerste gegevens wijzen erop dat de eerste proeven goed verlopen. Machines presteren beter dan mensen, wat de technologie kracht bijzet. Deze bevindingen zijn van cruciaal belang, aangezien Europa zich opmaakt voor een offici\u00eble stemming op 6 oktober over de bredere goedkeuring van FSD, dat momenteel in verschillende lidstaten is toegestaan dankzij een maas in de wet.<\/p>\n

De Scandinavische landen dringen aan op een stem tegen, terwijl grotere landen als Frankrijk en Duitsland, die een doorslaggevende rol spelen bij de stemming, terughoudend blijven.<\/p>\n

Maar tegenover de veelbelovende eerste cijfers uit Belgi\u00eb en Nederland tekent zich een ander, somberder beeld van FSD af. In juli registreerde de Amerikaanse NHTSA het hoogste aantal FSD-ongevallen dat ooit in \u00e9\u00e9n maand is vastgelegd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In totaal werden 236 ongevallen gemeld die verband hielden met FSD. Vier daarvan waren dodelijk; zeven mensen kwamen daarbij om het leven.<\/p>\n

Twee kanten van het probleem<\/h4>\n

In Maryland slaagde een Tesla Model 3 die een onbeschermde bocht naar links maakte er niet in voorrang te verlenen aan een motorfiets, waarbij drie mensen omkwamen. In San Mateo raakte een Model S van de weg, botste tegen een lantaarnpaal en vloog in brand, waarbij de bestuurder omkwam. In Ione reed een Model Y over de middenstreep en botste frontaal op een ander voertuig, waarbij de 25-jarige bestuurder om het leven kwam. Alleen een ongeval in Minnesota was anders: daar vond een botsing plaats in een wegwerkzaamhedenzone waarbij naar verluidt een Ford in de verkeerde richting reed. Maar FSD was actief op de Tesla.<\/p>\n

Het probleem is tweeledig. Uit de statistieken blijkt dat het aantal ongevallen in verband met FSD in de VS toeneemt: van 82 in dezelfde maand vorig jaar tot bijna het drievoudige daarvan dit jaar. Als het geautomatiseerde systeem beter presteert naarmate het meer kilometers aflegt, geven de cijfers een heel ander beeld.<\/p>\n

Bovendien maakt Tesla geen gegevens over deze incidenten openbaar om zijn bedrijfsbelangen te beschermen. Datzelfde argument wordt aangevoerd om te verklaren waarom het bedrijf v\u00f3\u00f3r de goedkeuring in Nederland geen testgegevens openbaar heeft gemaakt, wat de uitrol in een sneeuwbaleffect heeft veranderd. Daardoor is het moeilijk vast te stellen in hoeverre het systeem precies bij deze incidenten betrokken was.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoe dan ook, bijna geen enkele andere autofabrikant doet zo geheimzinnig over zijn gegevens op het gebied van autonoom rijden.<\/p>\n

Verschillende systemen<\/h4>\n

Maar goed, de Amerikaanse en Europese versies van FSD zijn niet rechtstreeks met elkaar te vergelijken. Niet wat de software betreft, en ook niet wat de regels betreft. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In de VS opereert Tesla onder een zelfcertificeringsregeling met toezicht na het in de handel brengen. De software bevat meer assertieve rijprofielen. De Europese configuratie maakt gebruik van strengere, continue bestuurdersbewaking via camera's in de cabine, vereist dat de handen beschikbaar blijven voor onmiddellijke overname van het stuur, en is standaard ingesteld op een conservatiever rijgedrag. Als de bestuurder bijvoorbeeld naar een telefoon kijkt, geeft het systeem waarschuwingen en schakelt het uiteindelijk uit.<\/p>\n
