{"id":194351,"date":"2026-09-22T12:30:16","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T10:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/?p=194351"},"modified":"2026-09-22T11:56:31","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T09:56:31","slug":"one-in-five-bike-paths-along-flemish-regional-roads-is-still-a-death-strip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmobility.news\/nl\/2026\/09\/22\/one-in-five-bike-paths-along-flemish-regional-roads-is-still-a-death-strip\/","title":{"rendered":"Een op de vijf fietspaden langs Vlaamse gewestwegen is nog steeds een \u2018dodelijke strook\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iets meer dan een kwart van de fietspaden op Vlaamse gewestwegen, oftewel 2.623 km (26%) van een totaal netwerk dat op meer dan 10.000 km wordt geschat, voldoet niet aan de veiligheidsnormen en is onvoldoende verhoogd of gescheiden van de rijbaan.<\/p>\n<p>De provincie Limburg heeft het hoogste percentage gevaarlijke wegvakken (30%), Antwerpen het laagste (21%), en van de centrale steden telt Genk slechts 6%, tegenover een verrassende 34% in de fietsvriendelijke stad Gent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVeel steden en lokale overheden investeren in fietsveiligheid, maar de Vlaamse regering doet dat niet op haar wegen\u201d, zegt Vlaams parlementslid Bogdan Vanden Berghe (Groen). Ook de Fietsersbond heeft kritiek op het beleid.<\/p>\n<h4>Geen onveilige fietspaden meer<\/h4>\n<p>Omdat er nog steeds veel gevaarlijke fietspaden zijn, pleit Groen voor een \u201cproject van de eeuw voor fietsveiligheid\u201d, zoals Oosterweel, het grootschalige infrastructuurproject op de Antwerpse ringweg voor zowel het snelwegverkeer als het fietsverkeer. De partij wil dat de Vlaamse minister van Mobiliteit, Annick De Ridder (N-VA), een gedetailleerd plan met een duidelijk tijdschema voorlegt om alle onveilige fietspaden weg te werken.<\/p>\n<p>Groen wil ook dat de minister de middelen toewijst in het volgende Ge\u00efntegreerde Investeringsprogramma (GIP), waarin alle investeringen op zijn bevoegdheidsgebied worden gebundeld.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoor De Ridder lijkt fietsveiligheid geen echte politieke prioriteit te zijn\u201d, zegt Vanden Berghe. \u201cEr zijn geen duidelijke termijnen, geen meetbare tussentijdse doelstellingen en geen garanties.\u201d Hij erkent echter wel dat het aanleggen van fietspaden een langetermijnproject is, en daarom pleit hij ook voor tijdelijke maatregelen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJe zou bijvoorbeeld op veel plekken tijdelijk betonblokken kunnen plaatsen. Een andere oplossing is om de maximumsnelheid op de gevaarlijkste wegen te verlagen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Tweede fietsregio van Europa<\/h4>\n<p>In een verklaring benadrukt de Vlaamse minister De Ridder dat er momenteel jaarlijks zo\u2019n 300 miljoen euro wordt ge\u00efnvesteerd in fietsinfrastructuur, tegenover 80 miljoen euro in het verleden. \u201cEn deze inspanningen werpen hun vruchten af. Vlaanderen staat nu op de tweede plaats van fietsregio\u2019s in Europa, na Nederland.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaar mogen we zeker wat trotser op zijn. Het werk is natuurlijk nog niet af: we willen elk fietspad veiliger maken. We boeken dus zeker vooruitgang,\u201d zegt De Ridder.<\/p>\n<p>Tegelijkertijd zegt de minister dat het onpraktisch is om overal aparte fietspaden aan te leggen. \u201cEr is niet altijd voldoende ruimte, vooral in bebouwde gebieden, en het is ook niet overal nodig. Veel hangt af van de wegindeling en de geldende snelheidsbeperkingen\u201d, zegt De Ridder, die concludeert dat het Vlaamse fietsnetwerk in feite uitzonderlijk is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGa eens fietsen in Walloni\u00eb, Frankrijk, Spanje of Portugal en zoek naar aparte fietspaden buiten de grote steden. Dat is geweldig. Maar voor iemand die vandaag de dag op een gevaarlijk stuk weg fietst, helpt een vergelijking met Spanje niet veel. Wij meten ons aan de koplopers\u201d, zegt woordvoerder Wies Callens.<\/p>\n<p>De mobiliteitsorganisatie Touring stelt op haar beurt dat niet elk fietspad op dezelfde manier hoeft te worden aangelegd. Op bepaalde wegen is bijvoorbeeld een fysieke scheiding wenselijk \u2013 het scheiden van fiets- en autoverkeer is volgens het Agentschap voor Wegen en Verkeer inherent de veiligste optie \u2013 maar dat is niet overal noodzakelijk of technisch haalbaar.<\/p>\n<p>Bovendien hoeft niet elke regionale weg een fietsstrook te hebben. \u201cAls er haalbare alternatieven zijn, kan het soms beter zijn om een weg voor te behouden aan gemotoriseerd verkeer in plaats van overal iedereen tegemoet te willen komen. Voorstanders van fietstoerisme pleiten ervoor om eerst de gevaarlijkste locaties aan te pakken.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In een recent rapport van de Europese Raad voor Verkeersveiligheid wordt expliciet gepleit voor een fysieke scheiding tussen fietsers en gemotoriseerd verkeer (beschermde rijstroken, aparte fietspaden, veilige kruispunten) zodra de snelheid hoger is dan 30 km\/u. Dit wordt in het rapport aangemerkt als de belangrijkste maatregel om de stijging van het aantal dodelijke fietsongevallen te keren.<\/p>\n<p>Meer dan 40% van alle dodelijke fietsongevallen in Europa vinden plaats op landelijke wegen. Dit zijn juist de soorten wegen waar gemengd verkeer nog steeds veel voorkomt (zonder apart fietspad) en waar hoge snelheden worden gereden.<\/p>\n<h4>Nog steeds te veel dodelijke fietsongevallen<\/h4>\n<p>In 2025 overleden in Belgi\u00eb 464 mensen binnen 30 dagen na een verkeersongeval. Dat is een daling van 1,1% ten opzichte van 2024. Het aantal ongevallen en slachtoffers neemt echter toe, met name onder tweewielers: 18% van degenen die binnen 30 dagen overleden, waren fietsers.<\/p>\n<p>In totaal vielen er binnen 30 dagen 82 dodelijke slachtoffers, waarvan 48 op de fiets, 33 op een elektrische fiets en 1 op een speed-pedelec.
