Geely Auto, het moederbedrijf van Volvo en Polestar, heeft een belang van 30% genomen in Nio Power, de tak van zijn Chinese concurrent die zich bezighoudt met het verwisselen en opladen van accu\u2019s. Deze stap lijkt vreemd. Amper een week eerder had Geely namelijk een snellaadtechnologie onthuld die het verwisselen van accu\u2019s overbodig maakt.<\/p>\n

Nog maar een paar dagen geleden, Geely heeft een laadstation van 2,2 megawatt onthuld<\/a>, waarbij een accu in minder dan vijf minuten van 10 naar 70 procent wordt opgeladen. Dat is ongeveer wat men voor ogen had toen het wisselen van accu\u2019s werd uitgevonden.<\/p>\n

Een aantal paarden<\/h4>\n

Waarom pompt Geely dan nu 84 miljoen euro in een netwerk dat door zijn eigen innovatieve technologie overbodig zou kunnen worden? Omdat Geely, net als het grootste deel van de Chinese industrie, niet meer weet welk tankmodel de overhand krijgt. Het is veiliger om op meerdere paarden in te zetten, terwijl hoofdconcurrent BYD deze specifieke technologie misloopt.<\/p>\n

Nio heeft op zijn beurt tien jaar en enorme sommen geld ge\u00efnvesteerd om zo\u2019n 4.000 batterijwisselstations in China te bouwen. Dit jaar staan er nog minstens 1.000 op het programma, en het doel is om tegen 2030 op 10.000 te komen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De economische realiteit is meedogenloos: deze stations zijn kapitaalintensief en leveren pas winst op als er voldoende auto\u2019s langskomen. Voor Geely is de oplossing niet nieuw. Zijn eigen batterijwisselbedrijf, Yiyi, had juist om die reden moeite om te groeien. En als je een bestaand netwerk kunt overnemen, heeft het geen zin om een concurrerend netwerk op te zetten.<\/p>\n

Europese uitbreiding opgeschort<\/h4>\n

Geely heeft plannen voor personenauto\u2019s en bedrijfsvoertuigen met verwisselbare accu\u2019s die bij de laadstations van Nio kunnen worden aangesloten. De twee fabrikanten zijn in gesprek om de verwisseltechnologie van Nio officieel in te voeren. Of we Volvo\u2019s met deze oplossing zullen zien, is waarschijnlijk een beslissing die de nieuwe CEO, Klaus Zellmer, zal moeten nemen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Europa is het netwerk van stations momenteel weliswaar aanwezig in de Scandinavische landen, maar nauwelijks op een overtuigende manier. Het heeft ook stations in Nederland en Duitsland (in Belgi\u00eb is er slechts \u00e9\u00e9n, voor Nio-klanten die op reis zijn).<\/p>\n

De verkoopcijfers van de bijbehorende automodellen zijn echter rampzalig. In de eerste helft van 2026 verkocht het merk in heel Europa slechts 45 auto\u2019s. Voornamelijk Firefly\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Dat afzetgebied is te klein om de investering in het overschakelen te rechtvaardigen. De toetreding van Geely tot de groep zou dat vooruitzicht kunnen veranderen. De uitbreidingsplannen voor Europa zijn opgeschort.<\/p>\n

In samenwerking met CATL<\/h4>\n

In China steeg de verkoop van Nio in de eerste acht maanden van het jaar met 58% tot 262.893 voertuigen, maar het bedrijf boekte opnieuw verlies na \u00e9\u00e9n winstgevend kwartaal eind vorig jaar. Op de binnenlandse markt krijgt Nio ook te maken met concurrentie van CATL, dat samen met Changan en Sinopec zijn eigen Choco-Swap-netwerk uitrolt.<\/p>\n

De interesse van Geely zou een aantal zaken weer op gang kunnen brengen, maar het bedrijf blijft enigszins terughoudend. Als bepaalde mijlpalen niet worden gehaald, zou Geely zijn belang in Nio Power kunnen terugbrengen van 30% naar 20%.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
