BYD voert een ingrijpende vernieuwing door aan zijn goedkoopste elektrische auto. De tweede generatie Seagull, die in Europa onder de naam Dolphin Surf wordt verkocht, is meer dan 40 centimeter langer geworden, heeft aanzienlijk meer vermogen gekregen en richt zich nu op een hoger segment met voorzieningen zoals een massagestoel, een ruime kofferbak aan de voorkant en optionele LiDAR.<\/p>\n

In Europees perspectief ontpopt de kleine Chinese stads-EV zich als een potenti\u00eble concurrent van auto\u2019s als de Renault 5, de Volkswagen ID. Polo en de Citro\u00ebn \u00eb-C3.<\/p>\n

Offici\u00eble informatie blijft beperkt in de aanloop naar de lancering in China, maar foto\u2019s van BYD en documenten die bij de Chinese regelgevende instanties zijn ingediend, laten weinig twijfel bestaan over de omvang van de transformatie. De nieuwe Seagull is 4,205 meter lang, 1,810 meter breed en 1,570 meter hoog, met een wielbasis van 2,650 meter.<\/p>\n

Daarmee is hij minstens 425 mm langer dan de huidige Seagull van 3,78 meter, terwijl de wielbasis met 150 mm toeneemt. De vierzitter wordt bovendien een vijfzitter.<\/p>\n

Van stadsauto tot B-segment<\/h3>\n

Voor Europa zijn de afmetingen het belangrijkst. Hierdoor valt de Seagull niet langer in de categorie van de traditionele stadsauto\u2019s, maar behoort hij duidelijk tot het B-segment, waar auto\u2019s als de Renault 5, de Citro\u00ebn \u00eb-C3 en de binnenkort te verschijnen ID. Polo van Volkswagen thuishoren.<\/p>\n

Ook het vermogen neemt sterk toe. Uit Chinese typegoedkeuringsdocumenten blijkt dat de auto is uitgerust met een elektromotor van 95 kW (127 pk), tegenover 55 kW in de Chinese versie van de uitlopende Seagull.<\/p>\n

De motor is bovendien verplaatst van de vooras naar de achteras, waardoor het nieuwe model achterwielaandrijving heeft. Daardoor ontstaat er onder de motorkap voldoende ruimte voor een bagageruimte van 94 liter aan de voorkant.<\/p>\n

China vermeldt twee maten LFP-accu\u2019s: 30 en 39,2 kWh. Deze bieden respectievelijk een actieradius van 320 km en 420 km volgens de ruimere Chinese CLTC-cyclus. CarNewsChina schat de WLTP-actieradius op ongeveer 262 tot 344 km, hoewel er nog geen offici\u00eble Europese typegoedkeuringscijfers beschikbaar zijn.<\/p>\n

Er zijn ook aanwijzingen dat BYD de auto zou kunnen uitrusten met zijn nieuwste ultrasnelle oplaadtechnologie. Uit Chinese berichten blijkt dat een versie met ultrasnel opladen mogelijk in negen minuten van 10 tot 97% zou kunnen opladen, maar BYD heeft die specificatie nog niet bevestigd voor productieauto\u2019s of voor Europa.<\/p>\n

Massagestoel in de goedkoopste elektrische auto van BYD<\/h3>\n

Ook het interieur heeft een opvallende metamorfose ondergaan. BYD heeft een groot, zwevend centraal display ingebouwd met een indeling in een verhouding van 3\/7. Het kleinere gedeelte aan de linkerkant toont rij-informatie zoals snelheid, actieradius en rijmodus, terwijl het grotere gedeelte is bestemd voor navigatie, multimedia en andere infotainmentfuncties.<\/p>\n

De voorstoelen zijn elektrisch verstelbaar en de bestuurdersstoel is voorzien van een massagefunctie. Daarnaast beschikt de auto over meerkleurige sfeerverlichting, ventilatie achterin en extra opbergvakken onder de stoelen van de tweede rij.<\/p>\n

Met de achterbank neergeklapt belooft BYD een bagageruimte van maar liefst 1.380 liter. In combinatie met de 94 liter grote bagageruimte in de motorkap is dat een opmerkelijke praktische bruikbaarheid voor een model dat ooit begon als een van de goedkoopste elektrische auto\u2019s van China.<\/p>\n

In China zal ook een optionele LiDAR-sensor voor op het dak verkrijgbaar zijn als onderdeel van BYD\u2019s DiPilot 300-rijhulppakket, ook wel bekend als God\u2019s Eye B.<\/p>\n

Chinese prijzenoorlog dwingt Seagull om volwassen te worden<\/h3>\n

Het nieuwe ontwerp laat ook zien hoe snel de Chinese markt voor elektrische auto\u2019s zich ontwikkelt. Volgens China EV DataTracker werden er tussen januari en augustus 2026 in China 74.087 exemplaren van de huidige Seagull verkocht. Dat waren er 66,5% minder dan in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder, doordat nieuwere concurrenten, zoals de Xingyuan van Geely, terrein wonnen.<\/p>\n

De huidige Seagull kost in China tussen de 69.900 en 85.900 yuan. CarNewsChina verwacht dat de prijs van de nieuwe generatie onder de 100.000 yuan zal blijven, oftewel minder dan 15.000 euro v\u00f3\u00f3r Europese belastingen en invoerrechten.<\/p>\n

In plaats van met een nog goedkoper model te komen, lijkt BYD kopers meer ruimte, vermogen en uitrusting te bieden, terwijl de Seagull in dezelfde, algemeen betaalbare marktpositie blijft.<\/p>\n

Europa krijgt eindelijk zijn elektrische auto\u2019s van \u20ac 25.000<\/h3>\n

Voor Europese fabrikanten is dit moment bijzonder interessant. Ze zijn namelijk nog maar net begonnen met het vullen van het al lang beloofde segment van elektrische auto\u2019s in de prijsklasse van 20.000 tot 25.000 euro.<\/p>\n

In Belgi\u00eb begint de huidige Dolphin Surf bij een catalogusprijs van \u20ac 21.440, terwijl de Inster van Hyundai begint bij \u20ac 23.349 en de instapversie van de Renault 5 bij \u20ac 24.900. Citro\u00ebn heeft de \u00eb-C3 dicht bij de drempel van \u20ac 20.000 gebracht, terwijl Volkswagen met de ID. Polo mikt op ongeveer \u20ac 25.000.<\/p>\n

Dat betekent dat een toekomstige Europese versie van de nieuwe Seagull te maken zou kunnen krijgen met een heel ander concurrentieklimaat dan zijn voorganger.<\/p>\n

Maar de reactie van BYD lijkt niet meer te zijn dan het nog goedkoper maken van zijn goedkoopste elektrische auto. In plaats daarvan voegt het de afmetingen, het vermogen, de bruikbaarheid en de uitrusting toe die normaal gesproken bij duurdere auto\u2019s horen.<\/p>\n

Dat zou de druk op Europese fabrikanten kunnen verleggen van de zuivere catalogusprijs naar de hoeveelheid auto en uitrusting die voor dat geld wordt geboden.<\/p>\n

De Europese prijs blijft de grote vraag<\/h3>\n

Een Europese lancering is nog niet officieel aangekondigd, en BYD heeft evenmin bevestigd dat het nieuwe model buiten China de naam Dolphin Surf zal behouden. Sommige berichten spreken van een Europese prijs van rond de 30.000 euro, maar dat bedrag blijft voorlopig louter speculatief.<\/p>\n

BYD krijgt bovendien nog steeds te maken met het aanvullende 17%-compenserende recht van de EU op in China gebouwde batterij-elektrische auto\u2019s, bovenop het normale invoerrecht.
