Op papier klinkt dat als een belangrijke stap op weg naar onafhankelijkheid van Azi\u00eb. Maar recente mislukkingen, vertragingen en nieuwe Chinese investeringen in Europa laten zien dat de werkelijkheid ingewikkelder ligt.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens de milieulobbygroep T&amp;E zou Europa tegen het einde van dit decennium over voldoende productiecapaciteit voor batterijcellen moeten beschikken, mits de projecten die momenteel als haalbaar worden beschouwd, daadwerkelijk worden gerealiseerd.<\/p>\n<p>De organisatie stelt dat Europa zich ontwikkelt van een tekort aan batterijfabrieken naar een situatie waarin de binnenlandse productie aan de vraag naar elektrische auto\u2019s kan voldoen.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-195071\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/PR-Map-batteries%402x-2.png?resize=640%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/PR-Map-batteries%402x-2.png?resize=1024%2C960&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/PR-Map-batteries%402x-2.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dat is zeker mogelijk. In landen als Polen, Hongarije en Duitsland zijn al grote batterijfabrieken in bedrijf, terwijl er in Frankrijk, Spanje en elders nieuwe fabrieken worden gebouwd.<\/p>\n<p>Er is echter een belangrijk verschil tussen batterijen die in Europa worden geproduceerd en batterijen die door Europese bedrijven worden geproduceerd.<\/p>\n<h4>Northvolt heeft de risico\u2019s aangetoond<\/h4>\n<p>De Europese batterij-industrie heeft de afgelopen jaren verschillende tegenslagen gekend. Het meest opvallende voorbeeld is Northvolt. Het Zweedse bedrijf werd ooit gezien als de beste kans voor Europa om een eigen concurrent op te bouwen tegen de grote Aziatische batterijfabrikanten.<\/p>\n<p>Ondanks miljarden euro\u2019s aan investeringen en orders van grote autofabrikanten had Northvolt moeite om zijn fabrieken op de vereiste schaal draaiende te krijgen en ging het bedrijf uiteindelijk failliet.<\/p>\n<p>Andere Europese projecten zijn uitgesteld, teruggeschroefd of geannuleerd. Ook Automotive Cells Company, dat wordt gesteund door Stellantis en Mercedes-Benz, heeft delen van zijn uitbreidingsplannen herzien.<\/p>\n<p>T&amp;E erkent zelf dat ongeveer een kwart van de batterijcapaciteit die sinds 2022 in Europa is aangekondigd, al is geannuleerd of opgeschort. Daardoor zijn de prognoses voor 2030 minder zeker dan de kopcijfers doen vermoeden.<\/p>\n<h4>Geproduceerd in Europa, eigendom van een bedrijf elders<\/h4>\n<p>Een ander punt is eigendom. Aziatische concerns zoals LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, SK On en CATL hebben een groot aandeel in de bestaande batterijproductie in Europa. T&amp;E schat dat meer dan 70% van de actieve Europese productiecapaciteit voor batterijcellen momenteel in handen is van niet-Europese bedrijven.<\/p>\n<p>Dat betekent niet per se dat die fabrieken minder nuttig zijn. Een batterij die in Hongarije of Polen wordt geproduceerd, zorgt nog steeds voor Europese banen en vermindert de noodzaak om afgewerkte cellen vanuit Azi\u00eb te verschepen. Maar het betekent ook dat Europa voor een groot deel van de technologie en knowhow afhankelijk blijft van buitenlandse bedrijven.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Volkswagen is hiervan een goed voorbeeld. De Duitse autofabrikant bouwt zijn samenwerking met de Chinese batterijspecialist Gotion verder uit; VW is daar al een belangrijke aandeelhouder van.<\/p>\n<p>Gotion heeft onlangs bekendgemaakt dat er verdere vooruitgang is geboekt op het gebied van solid-state-batterijen. Hierbij wordt de vloeibare elektrolyt in de huidige batterijen vervangen door een vast materiaal, en deze batterijen worden algemeen beschouwd als een van de volgende grote stappen voor elektrische auto's.<\/p>\n<p>In theorie kunnen ze aanzienlijk meer energie per gewichtseenheid opslaan, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd de veiligheid verbeteren en mogelijk de oplaadtijden verkorten.<\/p>\n<h4>Meer dan 400 Wh\/kg<\/h4>\n<p>Gotion meldt dat zijn Jinshi-solid-state-cellen strenge veiligheidstests op doorboring en hoge temperaturen hebben doorstaan en streeft nu naar een energiedichtheid van 400 Wh\/kg.<\/p>\n<p>Dat zou bijna het dubbele zijn van de ongeveer 205 Wh\/kg die de beste LFP-cellen van dit moment halen, en ongeveer 50% meer dan de ongeveer 265 Wh\/kg die mogelijk is met hoogenergetische NMC-batterijen. Van de huidige solid-state-cellen uit de proeffase wordt al beweerd dat ze ongeveer 350 Wh\/kg halen.<\/p>\n<p>Gotion heeft een proefproductie opgezet en een productielijn met een capaciteit van 2 GWh ontworpen, hoewel de massaproductie nog jaren op zich zal laten wachten.<\/p>\n<p>Daardoor is deze technologie niet alleen relevant voor laboratoriumexperimenten. Als solid-state-batterijen op termijn tegen een betaalbare prijs in massa kunnen worden geproduceerd, zouden elektrische auto\u2019s hiermee verder kunnen rijden zonder dat daarvoor steeds grotere en zwaardere accupakketten nodig zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Gotion streeft er bovendien naar om de kosten terug te brengen tot ongeveer $150 per kWh. Dat zou nog steeds bijna drie keer zoveel zijn als de ongeveer $50\u201360\/kWh die momenteel wordt betaald voor in massa geproduceerde Chinese LFP-cellen, wat aantoont dat solid-state-batterijen in eerste instantie een premiumtechnologie zouden blijven.<\/p>\n<p>Voor Europa is het echter van groter belang wie die volgende generatie batterijtechnologie ontwikkelt. Gotion is een Chinees bedrijf, maar raakt tegelijkertijd steeds nauwer betrokken bij Volkswagen en diens Europese batterijactiviteiten.<\/p>\n<h4>De volgende afhankelijkheid?<\/h4>\n<p>Dit leidt tot een enigszins paradoxale situatie. Europa zou genoeg batterijfabrieken kunnen bouwen om zijn eigen auto-industrie te bevoorraden, maar zou voor de technologie in die fabrieken nog steeds sterk afhankelijk blijven van Chinese of Koreaanse bedrijven.<\/p>\n<p>Hetzelfde probleem doet zich ook verderop in de toeleveringsketen voor. Europa importeert nog steeds een groot deel van het verwerkte materiaal dat nodig is voor de productie van batterijcellen, met name uit China.<\/p>\n<p>De algemene conclusie van T&amp;E is dus niet per se onrealistisch. Europa beschikt in 2030 wellicht inderdaad over voldoende fysieke productiecapaciteit voor batterijen.
