Renault zet nog sterker in op zijn Franse industri\u00eble basis. In een interview met France Inter zei CEO Fran\u00e7ois Provost dat de groep van plan is om de komende vijf jaar meer dan 10 miljard euro in Frankrijk te investeren, voornamelijk in elektrische mobiliteit en betaalbaardere auto\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Renault had in juli al een concreter bedrag aan die toezegging gekoppeld, toen Provost verklaarde dat het bedrijf nog eens 13 miljard euro zou investeren in het kader van de futuREady-strategie, mits aan de juiste voorwaarden zou worden voldaan.<\/p>\n

Dat komt bovenop de ongeveer 13 miljard euro die sinds 2021 al in het land is ge\u00efnvesteerd, waardoor de Franse industri\u00eble en technologische investeringen van Renault in tien jaar tijd mogelijk op zo\u2019n 26 miljard euro uitkomen.<\/p>\n

Het geld is bedoeld om datgene te versterken wat de groep steeds vaker presenteert als een sterk lokaal geori\u00ebnteerd ecosysteem voor elektrische voertuigen, dat auto\u2019s, elektromotoren, accu\u2019s, engineering en toeleveranciers omvat.<\/p>\n

De nieuwe investering is niet onvoorwaardelijk. Renault benadrukt dat deze afhankelijk is van het behoud van een voldoende concurrerend economisch, sociaal en politiek klimaat in Frankrijk. Niettemin verwacht Provost dat de Franse autoproductie dit jaar met ten minste 25% zal stijgen ten opzichte van de ongeveer 500.000 voertuigen in 2025.<\/p>\n

Frans elektrisch ecosysteem<\/h4>\n

In tegenstelling tot een investering die zich richt op \u00e9\u00e9n enkele nieuwe fabriek, bestrijkt de strategie van Renault een groot deel van de waardeketen voor elektrische voertuigen. Het ElectriCity-cluster in Noord-Frankrijk omvat de vestigingen in Douai, Maubeuge en Ruitz, terwijl in Cl\u00e9on elektromotoren worden geproduceerd. Ook de productie en ontwikkeling van accu\u2019s vinden in toenemende mate plaats in Frankrijk.<\/p>\n

Sinds 2010 heeft de Renault-groep in Frankrijk meer dan een miljoen elektrische voertuigen geproduceerd, waarvan ongeveer 600.000 bij ElectriCity. Renault heeft in het land ongeveer 39.000 mensen in dienst en schat dat nog eens 35.000 banen indirect afhankelijk zijn van zijn Franse toeleveringsketen.<\/p>\n

Het bedrijf voert ook ongeveer 60% van zijn onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingsactiviteiten uit in Frankrijk. Renault geeft aan dat 69% van de toegevoegde waarde van de Renault 5 in het land wordt gegenereerd. Tegen 2030 zou het nieuwste investeringsprogramma negen extra modellen voor de merken van de Renault-groep en vier voor partnerfabrikanten moeten ondersteunen.<\/p>\n

De Renault 5 is uitgegroeid tot een van de meest in het oog springende symbolen van die strategie. Hij wordt geproduceerd in Douai, samen met de M\u00e9gane E-Tech, de Sc\u00e9nic E-Tech, de Alpine A290 en elektrische modellen voor Nissan en Mitsubishi. Vlakbij, in Maubeuge, worden de Renault 4 en de Kangoo gebouwd.<\/p>\n

Een ander beeld in Duitsland<\/h4>\n

De uitbreiding van Renault\u2019s Franse EV-productiebasis staat in schril contrast met de ontwikkelingen in Duitsland, waar fabrikanten eveneens fors investeren in elektrificatie, maar tegelijkertijd bezuinigen op kosten, productiecapaciteit en organisatiestructuren.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen alleen al is van plan om tegen 2030 meer dan 35.000 banen te schrappen bij zijn Duitse vestigingen, terwijl de Volkswagen-groep als geheel streeft naar een inkrimping van het personeelsbestand met ongeveer 50.000 banen bij VW, Audi, Porsche en Cariad.<\/p>\n

Tegelijkertijd zijn nu ongeveer 100.000 VW-werknemers betrokken bij een nieuw arbeidsconflict, nadat het bedrijf verschillende langlopende loonovereenkomsten heeft opgezegd.<\/p>\n

BMW bevindt zich weliswaar in een sterkere financi\u00eble positie, maar heeft ook een nieuw effici\u00ebntieprogramma gelanceerd en wil zijn organisatie vereenvoudigen, terwijl het doorgaat met de introductie van de Neue Klasse-generatie elektrische auto\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Het contrast mag niet worden overdreven. Duitse fabrikanten blijven miljarden investeren in elektrische voertuigen, accu\u2019s, fabrieken en software. Maar ze financieren die transitie terwijl ze tegelijkertijd een veel grotere en duurdere verouderde industri\u00eble structuur afbouwen.<\/p>\n

China vormt een ander belangrijk verschil. Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz en Porsche hebben daar een omvangrijke bedrijfsactiviteit opgebouwd en aanzienlijke winsten geboekt. Maar nu krijgen ze te maken met snel sterker wordende Chinese concurrenten in wat ooit een van hun belangrijkste groeimarkten was. Renault heeft zich jaren geleden grotendeels teruggetrokken uit de reguliere Chinese markt voor personenauto\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Wat voorheen als een zwakte leek, zorgt er nu voor dat Renault aanzienlijk minder kwetsbaar is voor de afbrokkeling van de positie van Europese merken in China. De strategie van het bedrijf is nu juist meer gericht op Europese auto\u2019s uit het B- en C-segment, waaronder relatief betaalbare elektrische auto\u2019s zoals de Renault 4 en 5.<\/p>\n

De Benelux speelt een steeds grotere rol<\/h4>\n

Voor Belgi\u00eb en Nederland is de Franse investering van Renault allesbehalve een abstract verhaal over industriebeleid. Noord-Frankrijk is in feite uitgegroeid tot Renaults productiecentrum voor elektrische auto\u2019s voor de Benelux.<\/p>\n

Veel van de elektrische auto\u2019s die in Douai en Maubeuge worden geproduceerd, zijn rechtstreeks bestemd voor de naburige Europese markten, en Belgi\u00eb en Nederland behoren tot de meest ge\u00eblektrificeerde automarkten van Europa.<\/p>\n

In Belgi\u00eb waren volledig elektrische auto\u2019s in september goed voor een recordaandeel van 50,9% van de nieuwe registraties en voor 39,1% over de eerste negen maanden van 2026. Zelfs onder particuliere klanten overschreed hun aandeel voor het eerst de 20%.<\/p>\n

Nederland vertoont een vergelijkbaar patroon. BEV\u2019s waren in de eerste drie kwartalen goed voor 41,2% van de markt. Renault was in september het op drie na grootste merk van het land, met 2.490 registraties, terwijl de in Frankrijk gebouwde Renault 5 met 594 exemplaren het op vier na meest geregistreerde elektrische model was.<\/p>\n

Een bijzonder relevante exportregio<\/h4>\n

Dat maakt de Benelux tot een bijzonder belangrijke exportregio voor de Franse fabrieken van Renault. Auto\u2019s die op slechts een paar honderd kilometer van Brussel, Antwerpen of Rotterdam worden gebouwd, komen terecht op markten waar elektrische auto\u2019s al de norm aan het worden zijn in plaats van een niche te blijven.<\/p>\n

Renault blijft niet gespaard van de algemene problemen waarmee de Europese auto-industrie te kampen heeft. De concurrentie uit China neemt toe, de productiekosten blijven hoog en de winstgevendheid van elektrische auto\u2019s staat nog steeds onder druk. Toch maakt de groep een duidelijke industri\u00eble keuze.<\/p>\n

In plaats van zijn Franse productiebasis af te bouwen, zet Renault nog eens 13 miljard euro in op de verwachting dat een aanzienlijk deel van de waardeketen voor elektrische auto\u2019s in Frankrijk kan blijven, gesteund door nabijgelegen markten met een groot aandeel elektrische auto\u2019s, zoals Belgi\u00eb en Nederland.<\/p>\n

Of die gok zijn vruchten afwerpt, hangt af van het vermogen van Renault om in Frankrijk gebouwde modellen zoals de Renault 4 en 5 betaalbaar te houden, en tegelijkertijd met auto\u2019s zoals de nieuwe Twingo E-Tech elektrische mobiliteit in heel Europa verder naar het lagere segment van de markt te brengen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
