Renault heeft het afgelopen decennium zijn baanbrekende Espace-minibus geleidelijk omgevormd tot een SUV. Nu lijkt het bedrijf die beslissing te heroverwegen. Het nieuwe elektrische E-Space Concept keert terug naar de \u2018one-box\u2019-verhoudingen, het ruime interieur en de gezinsgerichte filosofie van het origineel uit 1984.<\/p>\n

Het concept zal op 12 oktober op de Autosalon van Parijs voor het eerst aan het publiek worden getoond. Voorlopig laat Renault nog maar een glimp van zijn plannen zien, maar wat het bedrijf al heeft onthuld, is veelzeggend: de E-Space is niet zomaar weer een grote elektrische SUV.<\/p>\n

In plaats daarvan omschrijft Renault het expliciet als een nieuwe interpretatie van de MPV, met een relatief lage bodemvrijheid, een lage gordellijn en een voorruit die vrijwel naadloos overgaat in de korte motorkap. Met een lengte van 4,70 meter, een breedte van 2,02 meter en een hoogte van 1,67 meter neemt hij bijna precies dezelfde ruimte op de weg in als de huidige Espace SUV.<\/p>\n

Terug naar waar Espace begon<\/h4>\n

Binnenin zijn zes afzonderlijke stoelen verdeeld over drie rijen op een volledig vlakke vloer. De stoelen kunnen iets draaien om het instappen te vergemakkelijken, terwijl andere opstellingen de passagiersruimte omtoveren tot een lounge rond een grote tafel.<\/p>\n

Met andere woorden: Renault keert terug naar de filosofie die de eerste Espace in 1984 zo revolutionair maakte: het maximaliseren van de bruikbare ruimte binnen een relatief compacte voetafdruk, in plaats van een conventionele passagiersruimte in een SUV-design te gieten.<\/p>\n

Die timing is misschien geen toeval. Renault had al meer dan twee jaar geleden toegegeven dat het overwoog om weer een volledig elektrische Espace-MPV op de markt te brengen.<\/p>\n

In april 2024 vertelde Olivier Brosse, destijds verantwoordelijk voor het elektrische AmpR Medium-platform van Renault, aan Autocar dat een dergelijk model \u201ciets is waar we over nadenken\u201d.<\/p>\n

De grote vraag, zei hij, was niet of Renault er een zou kunnen bouwen, maar of Europese kopers weer een MPV zouden accepteren. Het E-Space Concept lijkt er nu op dat Renault precies het antwoord op die vraag aan het testen is.<\/p>\n

Elektrische auto\u2019s zouden de MPV wel eens een nieuwe kans kunnen geven<\/h4>\n

Door de elektrificatie is het ontwerp ook interessanter geworden dan in het tijdperk van de verbrandingsmotoren. Dankzij een platte accu onder de vloer en compacte elektromotoren is het eenvoudiger om de wielen dichter bij de hoeken te plaatsen en een groter deel van de lengte van het voertuig aan de passagiers te besteden.<\/p>\n

Ondertussen richt Renault zich met zijn toekomstige EV-technologie steeds meer op het hogere segment. In het kader van de nieuwe \u2018futuREady\u2019-strategie zal de volgende generatie elektrische modellen in het C- en D-segment gebruikmaken van de nieuwe RGEV Medium 2.0-architectuur.<\/p>\n

Dat 800-voltplatform is ontworpen voor voertuigen uit zowel het B+- als het D-segment en is volgens Renault geschikt voor verschillende carrosserievarianten. In de volledig elektrische uitvoering streeft het naar een WLTP-actieradius van maximaal 750 km, terwijl er ook versies met vierwielaandrijving en een range extender op de planning staan.<\/p>\n

Renault heeft niet gezegd dat de E-Space op dit platform is gebaseerd, noch heeft het een productieversie aangekondigd. Maar het concept past naadloos in het plan van het merk om tegen 2030 twaalf nieuwe Europese modellen op de markt te brengen en zijn aanwezigheid in de grotere C- en D-segmenten te versterken.<\/p>\n

Een onderdeel van het concept is al op weg naar de showrooms. Het nieuwe OpenR Panorama-display strekt zich over een breedte van 1,13 meter door het interieur, en Renault bevestigt dat deze technologie in toekomstige elektrische modellen uit het hogere segment zal worden toegepast.<\/p>\n

Productie? Renault zegt voorlopig nee<\/h4>\n

Renault is voorzichtig en belooft niet te veel. Officieel zijn er \u201cmomenteel geen plannen voor een productieversie\u201d, en de E-Space wordt omschreven als een verkenning van toekomstige elektrische gezinsauto\u2019s. Maar concepten ontstaan zelden in een vacu\u00fcm, en Renault houdt zich al jaren openlijk bezig met onderzoek naar een elektrische Espace.<\/p>\n

Ook de markt is veranderd. De Volkswagen ID. Buzz heeft aangetoond dat kopers weer aangetrokken kunnen worden door iets dat noch een conventionele auto, noch weer een SUV is, terwijl Chinese fabrikanten steeds meer investeren in grote elektrische MPV\u2019s.<\/p>\n

De interessantere vraag is daarom misschien niet of Renault de Espace nieuw leven kan inblazen als elektrische MPV, maar of de SUV-boom eindelijk zo ver is afgenomen dat Europese gezinnen er weer een willen hebben.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
