De bus is ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Isuzu en belooft een grotere actieradius dankzij een verbeterde effici\u00ebntie. Maar zal hij Europese klanten kunnen overtuigen?<\/p>\n<p>Hoewel emissievrije bussen in Europa meestal op batterijen rijden, kunnen brandstofceloplossingen op waterstof in sommige delen van de wereld als een haalbaar alternatief worden beschouwd. Toyota Motor Corporation is een van de bedrijven die sterk inzetten op een waterstofmaatschappij, onder meer met bussen.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota bracht in 2018 de eerste generatie van zijn Sora-bus op waterstof voor het openbaar vervoer op de markt. Nu, acht jaar later, is het tijd voor een volledig nieuwe generatie. De nieuwe Sora is 10,55 meter lang en biedt plaats aan 70 passagiers, inclusief de chauffeur. Dankzij de volledig vlakke vloer is de bus ook gemakkelijk toegankelijk voor rolstoelgebruikers.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-195495\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/003.jpg?resize=640%2C216&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"216\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>Verbeterde effici\u00ebntie<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Terwijl de eerste generatie Sora volledig door Toyota was ontwikkeld, wordt het nieuwe model in samenwerking met Isuzu gebouwd. Toyota maakt namelijk gebruik van het \u2018full-flat\u2019 BEV-platform voor lijnbussen van Isuzu, waarbij de brandstofcel en de waterstoftanks op het dak zijn geplaatst.<\/p>\n<p>De drie waterstoftanks hebben een totale inhoud van 471 liter en bevatten waterstof onder een druk van 700 bar (ongeveer 19 kg). De brandstofcelstack met polymeerelektrolytmembraan kan tot 113 kW leveren aan een Li-ion-accupakket, dat de twee tractiemotoren van 110 kW van stroom voorziet.<\/p>\n<p>De nieuwe generatie biedt een aanzienlijk verbeterde effici\u00ebntie. Terwijl de eerste generatie Toyota Sora, met een brandstofcelstapel van 228 kW en een NiMH-accu, 200 km kon afleggen op een tank van 600 liter, biedt de nieuwe generatie een actieradius van 300 km op een tank van 471 liter. Dit komt neer op 50% meer actieradius bij een 20% kleinere tankinhoud.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-195496\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newmobility.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/002_en.jpg?resize=640%2C350&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>De tanks zijn geschikt voor toekomstige vulling met hoge doorstroming, wat betekent dat ze binnen 10 minuten kunnen worden gevuld. Dit geeft ze een voordeel ten opzichte van volledig elektrische bussen, die langere oplaadtijden hebben en daardoor minder lang inzetbaar zijn.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Een haalbare oplossing voor Europa?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>In veel opzichten lijkt de tweede generatie Toyota Sora een grote verbetering. Maar is dit een oplossing voor Europa? In Belgi\u00eb maakt de beperkte waterstofinfrastructuur het onwaarschijnlijk dat een groot buspark op waterstof kan rijden. Batterij-elektrische bussen lijken de toekomst te zijn voor emissievrije bussen.<\/p>\n<p>In sommige andere Europese landen zouden waterstofbussen een aanvulling kunnen vormen voor bepaalde toepassingen. Maar hoewel de nieuwe generatie Sora van Toyota een aanzienlijke verbetering is ten opzichte van de vorige, voegt deze niet echt veel nieuws toe aan de Europese markt. Bestaande waterstofbussen zoals de Solaris Urbino en de Wrightbus GB Kite Hydroliner bieden een vergelijkbare actieradius en\/of tanktijden.<\/p>\n<p>Maar de grootste concurrent voor de Sora in Europa zou wel eens de Caetano H2 kunnen zijn. City Gold, die gebruikmaakt van\u2026 een brandstofcelstapel van Toyota met een vermogen van 70 kW.<\/p>\n<p>Caetano combineert de stack met een LFP-accu van 100 kWh, die door de brandstofcel met lager vermogen op het optimale rendement wordt opgeladen en ook extern kan worden opgeladen \u2013 de Caetano H2.City Gold belooft een actieradius van 600 km, wat een verdubbeling is ten opzichte van de actieradius van de Sora.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Beperkingen<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Bovendien zou een technisch probleem de Sora minder aantrekkelijk kunnen maken voor de Europese markt. Toyota heeft gekozen voor tanks van 700 bar, een druk die gebruikelijk is voor personenauto\u2019s en lichte voertuigen, waarin slechts beperkte ruimte is voor grotere tanks. Een systeem van 700 bar is echter duurder dan een systeem van 350 bar, dat doorgaans wordt gebruikt voor zware toepassingen.<\/p>\n<p>En hoewel Hyundai, Toyota en in de toekomst ook BMW (met een brandstofcelstapel van Toyota) inzetten op waterstofauto\u2019s, lijkt de infrastructuur voor het tanken van waterstof steeds meer over te stappen op 350 bar.<\/p>\n<p>Het vullen van een 700-bar-systeem bij een 350-bar-tankstation betekent niet dat de tankduur verdubbelt. Het betekent dat de tanks slechts tot 350 bar kunnen worden gevuld, waardoor de actieradius van het voertuig wordt gehalveerd.<\/p>\n<p>Bovendien kan de productie van waterstof gepaard gaan met aanzienlijke energieverliezen. Dat hangt echter af van de productiemethode. Het rechtstreeks gebruiken van elektriciteit uit een batterij is effici\u00ebnter, hoewel de productie van batterijen energie- en materiaalintensiever is dan die van brandstofcellen.<\/p>\n<p>En dan is er nog de prijs van brandstofcelbussen. Op de Japanse markt kost de Sora ongeveer 500.000 euro, maar de prijs in Europa zou wel eens veel hoger kunnen liggen. Over het algemeen zijn waterstofbussen duurder dan batterij-elektrische bussen.
